Information Portals: A New Tool For Teaching Information Literacy Skills, Debra Kolah, Michael Fosmire Jan 2010

Information Portals: A New Tool For Teaching Information Literacy Skills, Debra Kolah, Michael Fosmire

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Librarians at Rice and Purdue Universities created novel assignments to teach students important information literacy skills. The assignments required the students to use a third-party web site, PageFlakes and NetVibes, respectively, to create a dynamically updated portal to information they needed for their research and class projects. The use of off-the-shelf web 2.0 technology to enable students to discover the latest information in their subject areas of interest provides an engaging, hands-on environment with immediate feedback on the quality of their searching. The authors provide a basic introduction to the use of the 'portal' web site. Then, the results of …

Psychophysical Investigation Of The Effect Of Coring On Perceived Toner Scatter, Hyung Jun Park, Jan P. Allebach, Zygmunt Pizlo Jan 2010

Psychophysical Investigation Of The Effect Of Coring On Perceived Toner Scatter, Hyung Jun Park, Jan P. Allebach, Zygmunt Pizlo

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

The use of color electrophotographic (EP) laser printing systems is growing because of their declining cost. Thus, the print quality of color EP laser printers has become increasingly important. Since text and lines are indispensable to print quality, many studies have proposed methods for measuring these print quality attributes. Toner scatter caused by toner overdevelopment in color EP laser printers can significantly impact print quality. A conventional approach to reduce toner overdevelopment is to restrict the color gamut of printers. However, this can result in undesired color shifts and the introduction of halftone texture. Coring, defined as a process where …

Information Literacy And The Workforce, Sharon A. Weiner Jan 2010

Information Literacy And The Workforce, Sharon A. Weiner

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

This presentation is a review of reports on information literacy and the workforce. There is a substantial body of literature on information literacy in K-16 educational settings, but there is much less literature on implications for the workplace and job-related lifelong learning. The topical categories of the reports are: the importance of information literacy for the workforce; how information literacy differs in work and educational settings; and barriers to information literacy in the workplace. The presentation concludes with recommendations for practice and for further research.

Microtomography-Based Simulation Of Transport Through Open-Cell Metal Foams, Karthik K. Bodla, Jayathi Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella Jan 2010

Microtomography-Based Simulation Of Transport Through Open-Cell Metal Foams, Karthik K. Bodla, Jayathi Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Important heat transfer parameters of aluminum foams of varying pore sizes are investigated through CT-scanning at 20 micron resolution. Small sub-samples from the resulting images are processed to generate feature-preserving, finite-volume meshes of high quality. All three foam samples exhibit similar volumetric porosity (in the range ~91–93%), and thereby a similar thermal conductivity. Effective tortuosity for conduction along the coordinate directions is also calculated. Permeability simulations in the Darcy flow regime with air and water show that the foam permeability is isotropic and is of the order of 10^-7m^2. The convective heat transfer results computed for this range of Reynolds …

Thermal Management Of A Soft Starter: Transient Thermal Impedance Model And Performance Enhancements Using Phase Change Materials, F. Volle, S. V. Garimella, M. A. Juds Jan 2010

Thermal Management Of A Soft Starter: Transient Thermal Impedance Model And Performance Enhancements Using Phase Change Materials, F. Volle, S. V. Garimella, M. A. Juds

CTRC Research Publications

Adverse effects of starting-torque transients and high in-rush currents in induction motors are typically mitigated by employing electronically controlled soft starting voltages through silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs). However, the heat dissipation in the soft starter must be carefully managed in the design of motor drives. The objective of this study is both to address the heat dissipation in the soft starter by implementing analytical solutions to the heat diffusion equations inside the soft starter, and to investigate the use of a phase change material (PCM) based heat sink for thermal management of the device. The analytical modeling approach is, however, general, …

A Method For Delivering Spatio-Temporally Focused Energy To A Dynamically Adjustable Target Along A Waveguiding Structure, J. B. Laflen, T. M. Talavage Jan 2010

A Method For Delivering Spatio-Temporally Focused Energy To A Dynamically Adjustable Target Along A Waveguiding Structure, J. B. Laflen, T. M. Talavage

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

It is possible to exploit the frequency-dependent velocity dispersion inherent to waveguiding structures to deliver spatio-temporally focused energy to a spatial target anywhere along the longitudinal extent of a waveguide. Such focusing of energy may have application to technologies as varied as nerve stimulation or chemical etching. A waveguide signal that effects this focused energy is conceptualized and derived. The spatial location of the target acted upon by the waveguide signal is demonstrated to be dynamically adjustable with a linear filtering step. Optimal parameters for waveguide signal generation are derived in the general case, allowing for application to a cross …
