Resistance Network-Based Thermal Conductivity Model For Metal Foams, Karthik K. Bodla, Jayathi Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
A network model for the estimation of effective thermal conductivity of open-celled metal foams is pre-sented. A nodal network representation of three aluminum foam samples from DUOCEL – 10 ppi, 20 ppi and 40 ppi – is constructed out of X-ray microtomography data obtained by computed tomography (CT) scanning of the samples using a commercial CT scanner. Image processing and 3D skeletonization are performed with commercially available image processing software. The effective thermal conductivity is estimated through a 1D conduction model, representing individual ligaments as an effective thermal resistance using the topological information from the scan data. The effective thermal …

Characterization Of Evaporation And Boiling From Sintered Powder Wicks Fed By Capillary Action, J. A. Weibel, S. V. Garimella, M. T. North
CTRC Research Publications
The thermal resistance to heat transfer into the evaporator section of heat pipes and vapor chambers plays a dominant role in governing their overall performance. It is therefore critical to quantify this resistance for commonly used sintered copper powder wick surfaces, both under evaporation and boiling conditions. The objective of the current study is to measure the dependence of thermal resistance on the thickness and particle size of such surfaces. A novel test facility is developed which feeds the test fluid, water, to the wick by capillary action. This simulates the feeding mechanism within an actual heat pipe, referred to …
Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage In Thermoclines Under Different Environmental Boundary Conditions, Z. Yang, S V. Garimella
Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage In Thermoclines Under Different Environmental Boundary Conditions, Z. Yang, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Operation during the charge and discharge cycles of molten-salt thermoclines used for solar thermal energy storage depends strongly on the environmental boundary conditions to which the tanks are exposed. A comprehensive model which accounts for thermal transport in the molten-salt heat transfer fluid and the filler material in the tank is developed for exploring the effects of boundary conditions on thermocline performance. Heat loss from the tank under non-adiabatic boundary conditions is found to distort the temperature and salt flow distributions relative to the uniform conditions found in adiabatic thermoclines; as a result, the outflow temperature drops more rapidly in …

Modeling Mitochondrial Bioenergetics With Integrated Volume Dynamics., Jason N. Bazil, Gregery T. Buzzard, Ann E. Rundell
Department of Mathematics Faculty Publications
Mathematical models of mitochondrial bioenergetics provide powerful analytical tools to help interpret experimental data and facilitate experimental design for elucidating the supporting biochemical and physical processes. As a next step towards constructing a complete physiologically faithful mitochondrial bioenergetics model, a mathematical model was developed targeting the cardiac mitochondrial bioenergetic based upon previous efforts, and corroborated using both transient and steady state data. The model consists of several modified rate functions of mitochondrial bioenergetics, integrated calcium dynamics and a detailed description of the K+-cycle and its effect on mitochondrial bioenergetics and matrix volume regulation. Model simulations were used to fit 42 …

Libraries Research Publications
The Management & Economics Library at Purdue University began a major physical and conceptual renovation four years ago. The conceptual renovation involves a rethinking of library faculty and staff roles and responsibilities based on the library's and university's strategic directives. The LearnLab space is being used as a springboard to create new partnerships, to implement our new roles, and to transform the perspective of an academic library's present capability. This article will highlight the variety of opportunities that have arisen by leveraging the LearnLab space.

Many institutions of higher education are designing spaces to facilitate learning. Libraries have created information or learning commons to support this activity. This article draws from the literature and best practices to explore this new direction. Academic libraries have focused on student learning and the teaching of skills and strategies that develop information literacy competency. Although there is an assumption that learning commons facilitate student learning, there is a need to more closely connect this new environment with information literacy and pedagogy and to demonstrate its merits in enhancing learning. A basic premise is that each learning commons that is …

Using A Student-Generated Survey To Inform Planning For A User-Focused Learning Commons, Sharon A. Weiner, John Weiner
Libraries Research Publications
A master’s comprehensive University is planning a learning commons to support undergraduate learning. The planning process included a literature review, site visits to commons, consultations with experts in the field, discussions with campus specialists, and surveys of patrons. The literature reports two primary forms of data gathering for learning commons: interview/observation and purposive surveys. This report describes the findings of a survey conducted to determine students’ perceptions of services relevant in learning commons. The findings indicated that the students wanted help with their information processing needs.

As globalization continues to influence the world of information and undergraduate learning, subjects pertaining to the United States as a country and complex culture emerge as interests globally, so much so that American Studies programs in other countries offer tantalizing opportunities to gain other perspectives and knowledge about the United States as a distinctively American experience. As American students study in American Studies programs, they may require or find useful, other approaches to American subjects in their research. A particularly interesting possibility for students and scholars is to avail themselves of French research, specifically doctoral dissertations in American studies. Since …

Information Literacy Beyond The Library: The National Forum On Information Literacy, Sharon A. Weiner, Lana W. Jackman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
The purpose of this column is to highlight information literacy activities that are occurring in organizations and institutions outside of libraries. Academic libraries have done much to advance information literacy in postsecondary institutions. Yet, much activity is also occurring outside of academic libraries in relation to information literacy. This column will feature some of those organizations and activities so that academic librarians may share information with them and develop new partnerships that will further advance the goals of information literacy.

Automated Pavement Condition Data Collection Quality Control, Quality Assurance, And Reliability, Ghim Ping (Raymond) Ong, Samy Noureldin, Kumares C. Sinha
JTRP Technical Reports
In recent years, state highway agencies have come to understand the need for high quality pavement condition data at both the project and network levels. At the same time, agencies also realize that they have become too dependent on contractors to ensure the quality of the delivered data without any means to independently assure the quality of these delivered data. This research study therefore aims to investigate the inherent variability of the automated data collection processes and proposes guidelines for an automated data collection quality management program in Indiana. In particular, pavement roughness data (in terms of IRI) and pavement …

Causal Induction From Continuous Event Streams: Evidence For Delay-Induced Attribution Shifts, Marc J. Buehner, Jon May
Causal Induction From Continuous Event Streams: Evidence For Delay-Induced Attribution Shifts, Marc J. Buehner, Jon May
The Journal of Problem Solving
Contemporary theories of Human Causal Induction assume that causal knowledge is inferred from observable contingencies. While this assumption is well supported by empirical results, it fails to consider an important problem-solving aspect of causal induction in real time: In the absence of well structured learning trials, it is not clear whether the effect of interest occurred because of the cause under investigation, or on its own accord. Attributing the effect to either the cause of interest or alternative background causes is an important precursor to induction. We present a new paradigm based on the presentation of continuous event streams, and …

Analysis Of Cat Oocyte Activation Methods For The Generation Of Feline Disease Models By Nuclear Transfer., Chunmin Wang, William F. Swanson, Jason R. Herrick, Kiho Lee, Zoltan Machaty
Department of Animal Sciences Faculty Publications
Background
Somatic cell nuclear transfer in cats offers a useful tool for the generation of valuable research models. However, low birth rates after nuclear transfer hamper exploitation of the full potential of the technology. Poor embryo development after activation of the reconstructed oocytes seems to be responsible, at least in part, for the low efficiency. The objective of this study was to characterize the response of cat oocytes to various stimuli in order to fine-tune existing and possibly develop new activation methods for the generation of cat disease models by somatic cell nuclear transfer.
Methods
First, changes in the intracellular …

We solve the equations governing light propagation in a negative-index material with embedded nonlinearly saturable gain material using a frequency-domain model. We show that available gain materials can lead to complete loss compensation only if they are located in the regions where the field enhancement is maximal. We study the increased enhancement of the fields in the gain composite as well as in the metal inclusions and show analytically that the effective gain is determined by the average near-field enhancement.
