Possibilities And Limits Of Comparative Literature Today, Darío Villanueva Dec 2011

Possibilities And Limits Of Comparative Literature Today, Darío Villanueva

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Possibilities and Limits of Comparative Literature Today," Darío Villanueva traces the itinerary of comparative literature over the last fifty years comparative literature in its various stages. The first of these confronted two options seen in a way as irreconcilable: the almost exclusive connexion with literary history or its identification with the theory of literature. Villanueva outlines the consolidation of the "new paradigm" which overcomes those contradictions, thanks to the methodological cooperation between comparative literature and the systemic theories of literature, and thanks, as well, to a return to philology as an adequate practice of reading. In addition, …

About Literary Systems And National Literatures, Elias J. Torres Feijó

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "About Literary Systems and National Literatures," Elias Torres J. Feijó offers a polysystemic analysis with examples from the Iberian Peninsula. He argues that a community's literature can be understood as a) the gathering of so-called literary activities, which take place in a social space or b) something that identifies certain characteristics of a part or the whole of the members in a given social space. For his analysis, Torres Feijó employs Itamar Even-Zohar's notion of polysystem because it allows us to interpret each system generated by members of a given community and its delimitation, differentiation, and integration …

Advertising And Autobiographical Discourse, María Ángeles Rodríguez Fontela

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Advertising and Autobiographical Discourse" María Ángeles Rodríguez Fontela sketches a poetics of advertising in autobiographic discourse working from a selection of narrative and autobiographical spots. Emphasized in her narratological study is the contraction of retrospective temporality, the domination of the proleptic construction of the "I," the ellipsis in the outcome, the iterative and archetypical character of the narrated episodes, the confidential tone of the narrative voice, and the mythical projection of the narrated story. Rodríguez Fontela analyzes in selected television advertisements the ironic, comic, and parodic effects which show the hybridization of genres and the rhetorical function …

Catalan And Galician Literatures In Iberian And European Contexts, Olivia Rodríguez González Dec 2011

Catalan And Galician Literatures In Iberian And European Contexts, Olivia Rodríguez González

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Catalan and Galician Literatures in Iberian and European Contexts" Olivia Rodríguez González investigates the problematics of canon formation and proposes an approach within which the formation of a multi-system canon is possible. Reflections on the constitution of a European canon that would be the result of a proportional or market-driven combination of national literary canons leads to the conclusion that, with respect to the multicultural Spanish state, what will succeed in getting into the European canon will do so as a consequence of one of two processes. The first depends on what each literary system does to …

Comics And The Graphic Novel In Spain And Iberian Galicia, Antonio J. Gil González Dec 2011

Comics And The Graphic Novel In Spain And Iberian Galicia, Antonio J. Gil González

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Comics and the Graphic Novel in Spain and Iberian Galicia," Antonio J. Gil González develops a comparative and interart analysis of graphic novels by examining the evolution of the genre on the Spanish peninsula in general and in Galicia in particular. Gil González builds his analysis on Roman Ingarden's concept of literature as not only traditional fiction, but also theater and cinema. Gil González presents his argumentation by identifying the peculiarities of the comic as a medium, starting with its historical beginnings, and discussing its principal formats and generic and thematic variants. Further, he discusses the principal …

Narration And Identity In Iberian Galician Literature, Dolores Vilavedra Dec 2011

Narration And Identity In Iberian Galician Literature, Dolores Vilavedra

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Narration and Identity in Iberian Galician Literature" Dolores Vilavedra discusses the contribution made by Galician narratives to the process of codifying models of a supposedly Galician identity. She shows how the development of literary narration has not always been gradual and that it has undergone stages of stagnation. Further, Vilavedra discusses how the narrative genre itself has gradually altered the prime objectives of its own development according to the apparent need to impose certain paradigms. She proposes that this process is closely linked, on the one hand to the process of language standardization and, on the other, …

Recruiting For Higher Education: The Roles That Print, Web, And Social Media Play In The Decision Process For Prospective Students, Brandon X. Karcher

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

Recruiting in higher education is a process that has been an evolving process since it first began. The most traditional methods for recruiting have been through print, web, and campus visits. However, with new social media like Facebook, Twitter, and other services, many universities have adopted the new media for recruiting purposes. Social media, coupled with a more technologically adept population of prospective students forces universities and colleges to look at an increasing number of mediums for recruiting. There is a lack of literature that documents the usefulness of the newer social media outlets. This study was designed to determine …

Agricultural And Biological Engineering / Eco-Hydrology - Purdue University, Jake R. Carlson

Data Curation Profiles Directory

The study of the impacts of sub-surface drainage where land use has recently changed from the production of commodity crops to bio-feed stocks is the focus in this data curation profile. The graduate student researcher’s overarching goal for the research is to test the theory that producing bio-feed stocks generates environmental benefits for the land. The graduate student is specifically testing the validity of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool in capturing the hydrologic cycle at the field scale. One of the data management issues is that there is a lack of standardized policies or procedures for documenting, describing or …

The Writing And Reading Of Fan Fiction And Transformation Theory, Veerle Van Steenhuyse Dec 2011

The Writing And Reading Of Fan Fiction And Transformation Theory, Veerle Van Steenhuyse

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "The Writing and Reading of Fan Fiction and Transformation Theory" Veerle Van Steenhuyse discusses the experience of immersive reading fan fiction offers to fans based on her analysis of fan fiction about the television series House, M.D. (2004-). Van Steenhuyse postulates that a text is immersive when it evokes a mental construct with the presence of a text-independent reality. In the case of fan fiction, this reality is a "transformed universe" that builds on and deviates from particular primary texts. Following the work of Marie-Laure Ryan and Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, Van Steenhuyse argues that readers feel immersed when …

Promoting Cultural Awareness In An International Business Program Through Foreign Language Communication, Mary Vigier, Nancy Smoller Le Floch Dec 2011

Promoting Cultural Awareness In An International Business Program Through Foreign Language Communication, Mary Vigier, Nancy Smoller Le Floch

Global Business Languages

The article examines a module developed over the past 20 years at a French management school to show how culturally based learning activities in the foreign language classroom can improve the school’s management training curriculum. Through debates, role plays, and discussions, the module improves students’ communicative skills and enhances their comprehension of self and others. The assignments aid students in making sense of unfamiliar contexts. By developing cultural awareness in addition to linguistic fluency, the class contributes to the school’s mission to train future business professionals to become open-minded and thereby to operate more effectively in today’s global business environment.

Exploratory Study In Pilot Communications: Verbal Versus Texting Communication, Lauren J. Steele Dec 2011

Exploratory Study In Pilot Communications: Verbal Versus Texting Communication, Lauren J. Steele

Aviation Technology Graduate Student Publications

Text messaging has been the cause of numerous vehicle accidents, and studies have been done in simulated driving tests to support this. The use of iPads in the cockpit has increased since the technology has been introduced and the proposed research seeks to investigate whether an iPad causes distraction for pilots. This study explored the differences in two different forms of communication – verbal and texting. Primary errors were in altitude deviations during text communication. Text messaging in the cockpit is not necessarily a distraction for pilots, but takes away from the scan of instruments resulting in errors.

Flight Training Success In Technologically Advanced Aircraft (Taa), Christopher J. Mccracken

Aviation Technology Graduate Student Publications

The introduction of glass cockpit aircraft to general aviation has received great interest from researchers over the past few years. However, little information is available on the actual effects of this transition on training syllabus completion. This study focuses on whether or not the transition from analog to glass cockpit aircraft in a university training fleet has affected instructor ability to properly train students as well as student success in flight training evaluations. Data analyzed included flight-training evaluations as well as a survey of current flight students. Findings suggest a relationship between successful flight training evaluations and the type of …

Contributing Factors In Piper Pa28 And Cirrus Sr20 Aircraft Accidents, Andrew J. Franza

Aviation Technology Graduate Student Publications

A large midwestern university has recently acquired Cirrus SR20 aircraft to replace an aging Piper PA28-161 fleet. This change to new and more advanced Cirrus aircraft has led to major changes in the flight program curriculum. New training techniques, guidelines, and operating procedures have been introduced to facilitate a successful transition. This study compared contributing factors to fatal accidents in SR20 and PA28-161 aircraft to determine if there are new risks associated with the subject fleet change. Using National Transportation Safety Board data, this study examined probable cause and other pertinent data from fatal accidents over the past ten years. …

Teaching Arabic To Business Students, Amel Mili Dec 2011

Teaching Arabic To Business Students, Amel Mili

Global Business Languages

It has become increasingly more critical for business students to be fluent in foreign languages and knowledgeable of foreign cultures. There is more to teaching a foreign language to a business student than teaching vocabulary and grammar. In order to prepare students to be successful businesspersons in the target geographic area, we must also introduce them to such topics as the local culture, local economic conditions, and local business ethics. In this article, I discuss my experience at Lauder with the Arabic language and culture program, by discussing in turn its requirements, premises, and lessons learned.
