The Challenge Of Transcultural Competence: Background Reading Of Target Culture Current Events Articles, Norbert Hedderich Dec 2011

The Challenge Of Transcultural Competence: Background Reading Of Target Culture Current Events Articles, Norbert Hedderich

Global Business Languages

At the lower and intermediate-levels of language instruction, students do not have sufficient language proficiency to inform themselves about current events in the target language. Knowledge of current events is an important part of cultural competence and should not be absent from instruction because of linguistic restrictions. This article proposes to remedy this problem, by creating out-of-class reading assignments of current events articles from US and international English language news sources. The article provides practical information on selection criteria for articles, suggests news sources, and gives examples of assignments.

Inanimate Speech From Lovecraft To Žižek, Apple Z. Igrek Dec 2011

Inanimate Speech From Lovecraft To Žižek, Apple Z. Igrek

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Inanimate Speech from Lovecraft to Žižek" Apple Z. Igrek explores an influential line of reasoning associated with our contemporary loss of the Real. The argument describes how the contingencies and nuances of social life have been reduced to an operational, friction-free, and homogeneous realm of signs. Slavoj Žižek contends that our inherently traumatic relationship with the Other is being foreclosed and replaced by an omnipresent technological screen of virtual communication. The danger of this shift, identified as the "digital break," is that it facilitates an extraordinary form of divine violence which strikes back at the social system …

Fernández And Cinematic Propaganda In The U.S. And Mexico, Renae L. Mitchell Dec 2011

Fernández And Cinematic Propaganda In The U.S. And Mexico, Renae L. Mitchell

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Fernández and Cinematic Propaganda in the U.S. and Mexico" Renae L. Mitchell discusses the competing ideologies on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. As one of the foremost filmmakers of the Mexican Golden Age of cinema, Emilio Fernández established what would is recognized as "Mexicanness" by means of Indigenous characters in his films, most apparent in the film María Candelaria. RKO (Radio-Keith-Orpheum) Pictures, as the principal purveyor of US-American propagandist cinema, led Hollywood into the cinematic market of Mexico revealing its intentions by means of the RKO film The Falcon in Mexico. Fernández sought to …

Comparative Literature In Chinese And An Interview With Yue, Hui Zhang, Daiyun Yue Dec 2011

Comparative Literature In Chinese And An Interview With Yue, Hui Zhang, Daiyun Yue

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Comparative Literature in Chinese and an Interview with Daiyun Yue" Hui Zhang and Daiyun Yue present a review of the discipline of comparative literature based on an interview with Yue (2010). Because Yue's work with comparative literature is intertwined with her personal journey, the interview sheds light on other Chinese scholars and their work who would not be known audiences outside China. The interview also touches on the academic and political reasons why the joint dualisms of "ancient/modern" and "Chinese/foreign" continue to be major structuring principles of the discipline in China, as well as how the development …

Academic Discourse And Literacy Narratives As "Equipment For Living", Kris Rutten Dec 2011

Academic Discourse And Literacy Narratives As "Equipment For Living", Kris Rutten

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Academic Discourse and Narratives of Literacy as 'Equipment for Living'" Kris Rutten discusses practices of academic discourse and argues that students entering higher education have to become part of a specific community of institutional discourse. Rutten claims that narratives of and about literacy — narratives that revolve around issues dealing with language and the acquisition of literacy — "dramatize" the tension of moving from one discourse community to another. By charting situations of "type," fictional literacy narratives can be used by students as "equipment for living" in order to reflect on confrontations and difficulties they experience in …

transportation research. The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) annually invests approximately $180 million in State Planning and Research (SPR) and University Transportation Centers (UTC). This investment generates an extensive portfolio of “grey literature” that is not yet uniformly cataloged or accessible, despite the best efforts of the National Technical Information Service, the Transportation Research Board, and the National Transportation Library. This paper reports on a review of publishing and archiving practices for transportation research technical reports, summarizes best practices, and recommends that UTC and SPR research programs seek and strengthen partnerships with libraries to facilitate improved production, stewardship and …

Functions Of The Duplicated Hik31 Operons In Central Metabolism And Responses To Light, Dark, And Carbon Sources In Synechocystis Sp. Strain Pcc 6803, Sowmya Nagarajan, Debby Sherman, Isaac Shaw, Louis A. Sherman Nov 2011

Sherman

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

There are two closely related hik31 operons involved in signal transduction on the chromosome and the pSYSX plasmid in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803. We studied the growth, cell morphology, and gene expression in operon and hik mutants for both copies, under different growth conditions, to examine whether the duplicated copies have the same or different functions and gene targets and whether they are similarly regulated. Phenotype analysis suggested that both operons regulated common and separate targets in the light and the dark. The chromosomal operon was involved in the negative control of autotrophic events, whereas the plasmid …

Public Perception Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Alice Tam Nov 2011

Public Perception Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Alice Tam

Aviation Technology Graduate Student Publications

This study explored public risk perception of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for civilian commercial operations, including cargo and passenger transportation. Civilian operators are considering the use of UAVs to increase safety while reducing labor costs, but negative perceptions may delay the advancement of these aircraft. To document perception of UAV or UAS aircraft for commercial operations, a questionnaire was distributed to adults (ages 18+) who use commercial air travel. The survey classified age group, gender, and UAV familiarity as demographic variables. This study assessed risk perception of UAVs and its correlation to the variables through statistical analysis to identify whether …

Ambiguous Assessment: Critiquing The Anthropology Graduate Admissions Process, Elizabeth A. Marks

Journal of Contemporary Anthropology

This article presents a survey of admissions processes employed by 43 American anthropologydepartments. Motivated by a desire to begin a dialogue about how candidates can be better prepared tosubmit an application, and to assess how individual departments make admissions decisions, I conducteda survey of faculty within these departments using both email and a web-based survey tool. Additionally,I spoke to prospective doctoral student users of a particular online forum– thegradcafe.com– to assesstheir understanding of the process and their confidence about admissions. Herein, I further attempt toexplain why a transparent admissions process is in the interest of anthropology graduate programs, andsuggest how …

Too 'High' Tech: Metonymical Fallacies And Fetishism In The Perception Of Technology, Aníbal García Arregui Nov 2011

Too 'High' Tech: Metonymical Fallacies And Fetishism In The Perception Of Technology, Aníbal García Arregui

Journal of Contemporary Anthropology

This paper suggests that technology is excessively ‘high’ in two senses. The first sense refers to a high level of logical or grammatical abstraction: artifacts and machines are designated (in medias, everyday and scientific discourses) as ‘technology’, a word that etymologically refers to the knowledge surrounding those artifacts. Following the Logical Types Theory, the fact of designating concrete artifacts with the level of abstraction which corresponds to the totality containing those artifacts, leads us into metonymical or “vicious circle fallacies” (Whitehead & Russell, 1962). The second sense of ‘highness’ is symbolic. Recent works on Anthropology of Technology show that machines …

Effects Of Carbon Nanotube-Tethered Nanosphere Density On Amperometric Biosensing: Simulation And Experiment, Jonathan Caussen, James Hengenius, Monique Wickner, Timothy Fisher, David Umulis, Marshall Porterfield Nov 2011

Effects Of Carbon Nanotube-Tethered Nanosphere Density On Amperometric Biosensing: Simulation And Experiment, Jonathan Caussen, James Hengenius, Monique Wickner, Timothy Fisher, David Umulis, Marshall Porterfield

Birck and NCN Publications

Nascent nanofabrication approaches are being applied to reduce electrode feature dimensions from the microscale to the nanoscale, creating biosensors that are capable of working more efficiently at the biomolecular level. The development of nanoscale biosensors has been driven largely by experimental empiricism to date. Consequently, the precise positioning of nanoscale electrode elements is typically neglected, and its impact on biosensor performance is subsequently overlooked. Herein, we present a bottom-up nanoelectrode array fabrication approach that utilizes low-density and horizontally oriented single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as a template for the growth and precise positioning of Pt nanospheres. We further develop a computational …

Libraries Research Publications

Over the past five years, libraries have begun to expand their role in the scholarly publishing value chain by offering a greater range of pre-publication and editorial support services. Given the rapid evolution of these services, there is a clear community need for practical guidance concerning the challenges and opportunities facing library-based publishing programs.

Recognizing that library publishing services represent one part of a complex ecology of scholarly communication, Purdue University Libraries, in collaboration with the Libraries of Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Utah, secured an IMLS National Leadership Grant under the title “Library Publishing Services: Strategies …
