A passive optical diode effect would be useful for on-chip optical information processing but has been difficult to achieve. Using a method based on optical nonlinearity, we demonstrate a forward-backward transmission ratio of up to 28 decibels within telecommunication wavelengths. Our device, which uses two silicon rings 5 micrometers in radius, is passive yet maintains optical nonreciprocity for a broad range of input power levels, and it performs equally well even if the backward input power is higher than the forward input. The silicon optical diode is ultracompact and is compatible with current complementary metal-oxide semiconductor processing.

Structural Biology (SB) techniques are particularly successful in solving virus structures. Taking advantage of the symmetries, a heavy averaging on the data of a large number of specimens, results in an accurate determination of the structure of the sample. However, these techniques do not provide true single molecule information of viruses in physiological conditions. To answer many fundamental questions about the quickly expanding physical virology it is important to develop techniques with the capability to reach nanometer scale resolution on both structure and physical properties of individual molecules in physiological conditions. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) fulfills these requirements providing images …

Chitosan is a cationic polymer of natural origin and has been widely explored as a pharmaceutical excipient for a broad range of biomedical applications. While generally considered safe and biocompatible, chitosan has the ability to induce inflammatory reactions, which varies with the physical and chemical properties. We hypothesized that the previously reported zwitterionic chitosan (ZWC) derivative had relatively low pro-inflammatory potential because of the aqueous solubility and reduced amine content. To test this, we compared various chitosans with different aqueous solubilities or primary amine contents with respect to the intraperitoneal (IP) biocompatibility and the propensity to induce proinflammatory cytokine production …

Expression of KdpFABC, a K+ pump that restores osmotic balance, is controlled by binding of the response regulator KdpE to a specific DNA sequence (kdpFABCBS) via the winged helix-turn-helix type DNA binding domain (KdpEDBD). Exploration of E. coli KdpEDBD andkdpFABCBS interaction resulted in the identification of two conserved, AT-rich 6 bp direct repeats that form half-sites. Despite binding to these half-sites, KdpEDBD was incapable of promoting gene expression in vivo. Structure-function studies guided by our 2.5 Å X-ray structure of KdpEDBD revealed the importance of residues R193 and R200 in the α-8 DNA recognition helix and …

Department of Entomology Faculty Publications
Populations of honey bees and other pollinators have declined worldwide in recent years. A variety of stressors have been implicated as potential causes, including agricultural pesticides. Neonicotinoid insecticides, which are widely used and highly toxic to honey bees, have been found in previous analyses of honey bee pollen and comb material. However, the routes of exposure have remained largely undefined. We used LC/MS-MS to analyze samples of honey bees, pollen stored in the hive and several potential exposure routes associated with plantings of neonicotinoid treated maize. Our results demonstrate that bees are exposed to these compounds and several other agricultural …

Recombinant Probiotic Expressing Listeria Adhesion Protein Attenuates Listeria Monocytogenes Virulence In Vitro., Ok Kyung Koo, Mary Anne Roshni Amalaradjou, Arun K. Bhunia
Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
Background
Listeria monocytogenes, an intracellular foodborne pathogen, infects immunocompromised hosts. The primary route of transmission is through contaminated food. In the gastrointestinal tract, it traverses the epithelial barrier through intracellular or paracellular routes. Strategies to prevent L. monocytogenes entry can potentially minimize infection in high-risk populations.Listeria adhesion protein (LAP) aids L. monocytogenes in crossing epithelial barriers via the paracellular route. The use of recombinant probiotic bacteria expressing LAP would aid targeted clearance of Listeria from the gut and protect high-risk populations from infection.
Methodology/Principal Findings
The objective was to investigate the ability of probiotic bacteria or LAP-expressing recombinant …

Gaining Insight Into The Physics Of Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy In Complex Environments Using The Veda Simulator, Daniel Kiracofe, John Melcher, Arvind Raman
Birck and NCN Publications
Dynamic atomic force microscopy (dAFM) continues to grow in popularity among scientists in many different fields, and research on new methods and operating modes continues to expand the resolution, capabilities, and types of samples that can be studied. But many promising increases in capability are accompanied by increases in complexity. Indeed, interpreting modern dAFM data can be challenging, especially on complicated material systems, or in liquid environments where the behavior is often contrary to what is known in air or vacuum environments. Mathematical simulations have proven to be an effective tool in providing physical insight into these non-intuitive systems. In …

Worker selection is a significant and challenging issue in crowdsourcing systems. Such selection is usually based on an assessment of the reputation of the individual workers participating in such systems. However, assessing the credibility and adequacy of such calculated reputation is a real challenge. In this paper, we propose an analytic model which leverages the values of the tasks completed, the credibility of the evaluators of the results of the tasks and time of evaluation of the results of these tasks in order to calculate an accurate and credible reputation rank of participating workers and fairness rank for evaluators. The …

Science Librarians Analysis Of The 2011 Nobel Prize In Physics: The Work Of Saul Perlmutter, Brian P. Schmidt, And Adam G. Riess, Michael Fosmire, Debra Kolah
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2011 was awarded to scientists from two different research collaborations that independently and contemporaneously discovered from observations of distant supernovae that the universe's expansion is accelerating. One half of the prize was awarded to Saul Perlmutter and the other half jointly to Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Riess. The findings, first reported in 1998, shocked the cosmology community, as the prevailing theory at the time favored a “closed” or “steady-state” universe, rather than one wherein the universe expands faster and faster, ultimately ending as a cold, dark, (largely) empty space. It was, perhaps, fortuitous …

Optimization Of Peripheral Finned-Tube Evaporators Using Entropy Generation Minimization, Bruno Pussoli, Jader Barbosa Jr., Luciana Da Silva, Massoud Kaviany
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The peripheral finned-tube (PFT) is a new geometry for enhanced air-side heat transfer under moisture condensate blockage (evaporators). It consists of individual hexagonal (peripheral) fin arrangements with radial fins whose bases are attached to the tubes and tips are interconnected with the peripheral fins. In this paper, experimentally validated semi-empirical models for the air-side heat transfer and pressure drop are combined with the entropy generation minimization theory to determine the optimal characteristics of PFT heat exchangers. The analysis is based on three independent parameters, i.e., porosity, equivalent particle diameter and particle-based Reynolds number. The total heat transfer rate is a …

Self-Optimizing Control Of Cooling Tower For Efficient Operation Of Chilled Water Systems, Xiao Li, Yaoyu Li, John E. Seem, Pengfei Li
International High Performance Buildings Conference
The chilled-water systems, mainly consisting of electric chillers and cooling towers, are crucial for the ventilating and air conditioning systems in commercial buildings. Energy efficient operation of such systems is thus important for the energy saving of commercial buildings. This paper presents an extremum seeking control (ESC) scheme for energy efficient operation of the chilled-water system, and presents a Modelica based dynamic simulation model for demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. The simulated plant consists of a water-cooled screw chiller and a mechanical-draft counter-flow wet cooling tower. The ESC scheme takes the total power consumption of the chiller …

Combined Heat And Moisture Transfer In Buildings Systems, Rashmin Damle, Oriol Lehmkuhl, Joaquim Rigola, Assensi Oliva
International High Performance Buildings Conference
Temperature and humidity are the two main parameters indicating the comfort level of the building occupants. Although the effect of temperature is taken into account in thermal simulation of buildings, the moisture transfer through the rooms and porous building walls is sometimes neglected. The level of humidity can give different sensations of thermal comfort. It is necessary to take into account both heat and moisture transport in and around buildings to predict the hygrothermal behavior of rooms and building walls so as to calculate the energy demands correctly. In this work some benchmark exercises are worked out to see the …

Visualization Of Vapor Formation Regimes During Capillary-Fed Boiling In Sintered-Powder Heat Pipe Wicks, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
The current study investigates capillary-fed boiling of water from porous sintered powder wicks used in emerging high-effective-conductivity vapor chamber heat spreaders intended for management of hot spots with heat fluxes exceeding 500Wcm-2. Characterization of 1 mm thick wicks composed of 100 lm sintered copper particles is performed in a test facility which replicates the capillary feeding conditions that occur in such devices. Boiling curves are obtained for a 5 mm x 5 mm heated input area, along with high-speed in-situ visualization of the evaporation/boiling processes. Understanding the vapor formation regimes is essential to predictive modeling of the observed characteristics. Schematic …

Comparison Of Equation-Based And Non-Equation-Based Approaches For Transient Modeling Of A Vapor Compression Cycle, Hongtao Qiao, Vikrant Aute, Reinhard Radermacher
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Transient modeling methods can also be classified into two categories based on equation specifications. The first category of methods are non-equation based methods, in which one has to describe the underlying physics with fundamental equations, formulate residual equations and provide an algorithm to solve the underlying nonlinear equations. The second category of methods are equation based methods, wherein the engineer only has to specify the underlying physics, that holds for each time step, in the form of equations and use an established modeling platform or a solver which will handle the formulation and solution of underlying nonlinear differential algebraic equations. …

1d Heat Exchanger Simulation To Capture The Cycling Transients Of Domestic Refrigeration Appliances Working With R600a, Erwin Berger, Martin Heimel, Raimund Almbauer, Wolfgang Lang
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
To further increase the energy efficiency of domestic refrigeration systems, it is not sufficient anymore to optimize the single cycle components on their own. On the contrary, due to the strong system interactions, an integral consideration of the whole cooling cycle is necessary to capture the system dynamics in detail and to understand them. Just by understanding the occurring physical effects, loss mechanisms can be identified and efficient optimizing measures could be taken. In this work a transient model for the simulation of the evaporator and the condenser of domestic refrigeration appliances, based on the Finite Volume Method (FVM) is …

Carbon Nanotube Coatings For Enhanced Capillary-Fed Boiling From Porous Microstructures, J. A. Weibel, S. S. Kim, T. S. Fisher, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Due to their high intrinsic thermal conductivity, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have previously been incorporated into a variety of thermal management applications to improve cooling performance. Implementation of controlled CNT growth techniques and functionalization methods are applied herein to enhance boiling heat transfer from the porous capillary wicking surfaces widely used in high heat flux thermal management devices. A microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) synthesis process resulted in growth of a permeable CNT coating, and physical vapor deposition of copper over these nanotubes yielded the requisite hydrophilic wicking surface. An array of test samples was fabricated and then evaluated using …
Second-Law Analysis Of Molten-Salt Thermal Energy Storage In Thermoclines, S. Flueckiger, S V. Garimella
Second-Law Analysis Of Molten-Salt Thermal Energy Storage In Thermoclines, S. Flueckiger, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
The cyclic operation of a molten-salt thermocline tank is simulated to investigate the influence of internal granule diameter and external convection losses on tank performance. Practical constraints limiting thermocline tank height are taken into account. The authors two-temperature model, developed in earlier work (Solar Energy, 84, 974–985, 2010) for the analysis of heat transfer and fluid flow in the thermocline tank, is extended to monitor entropy generation and exergy transport. Storage performance is measured in terms of first- and second-law efficiency definitions, as well as a first-law efficiency used in conjunction with an outflow temperature criterion. Reducing the diameter of …

Thermomechanical Simulation Of The Solar One Thermocline Storage Tank, S. Flueckiger, Z. Yang, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
The growing interest in large-scale solar power production has led to a renewed exploration of thermal storage technologies. In a thermocline storage system, heat transfer fluid (HTF) from the collection field is simultaneously stored at both excited and dead thermal states inside a single tank by exploiting buoyancy forces. A granulated porous medium included in the tank provides additional thermal mass for storage and reduces the volume of HTF required. While the thermocline tank offers a low-cost storage option, thermal ratcheting of the tank wall (generated by reorientation of the granular material from continuous thermal cycling) poses a significant design …

Numerical Investigation Of An Evaporating Meniscus In A Channel, H. K. Dhavaleswarapu, J. Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
A detailed numerical model is developed that describes heat and mass transfer from a meniscus to open air. The model accounts for the effects of evaporation at the interface, vapor transport through air, ther- mocapillary convection, and natural convection in air. Evaporation at the interface is modeled using kinetic theory, while vapor transport in air is computed by solving the complete species transport equa- tion. Since the vapor pressure at the liquid–gas interface depends on both evaporation and the vapor transport in air, the equations are solved in an iterative manner. Evaporation is strongest at the triple line due to …

Wicking And Thermal Characteristics Of Micropillared Structures For Use In Passive Heat Spreaders, R. Ranjan, A. Patel, S V. Garimella, J. Murthy
CTRC Research Publications
The thermal and hydrodynamic performance of passive two-phase cooling devices such as heat pipes and vapor chambers is limited by the capabilities of the capillary wick structures employed. The desired char- acteristics of wick microstructures are high permeability, high wicking capability and large extended meniscus area that sustains thin-film evaporation. Choices of scale and porosity of wick structures lead to trade-offs between the desired characteristics. In the present work, models are developed to predict the capillary pressure, permeability and thin-film evaporation rates of various micropillared geometries. Novel wicking geometries such as conical and pyramidal pillars on a surface are proposed …
