Truth And Politics: The Loss Of Authoritativeness In Contemporary Politics, Antonio Maria Baggio Mar 2012

Truth And Politics: The Loss Of Authoritativeness In Contemporary Politics, Antonio Maria Baggio

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article deals with an aspect of the contemporary political crisis in Western countries, namely, the sharpening conflict between politics and truth, a problem interwoven with the progressive loss of authoritativeness in contemporary politics. The risk of reducing truth to opinion is to be expected in a merely procedural interpretation of democracy, obscuring the element of shared truth that lies at the origin of every political community. The expansion of power to the detriment of authority contributes ultimately to forgetting the original truth, that should instead be refocused and brought up-to-date in order to give a sense of direction once …

Dengue Virus Infection Perturbs Lipid Homeostasis In Infected Mosquito Cells., Rushika Perera, Catherine Riley, Giorgis Isaac, Amber S. Hopf-Jannasch, Ronald J. Moore, Karl W. Weitz, Ljiljana Pasa-Tolic, Thomas O. Metz, Jiri Adamec, Richard J. Kuhn

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Dengue virus causes ~50–100 million infections per year and thus is considered one of the most aggressive arthropod-borne human pathogen worldwide. During its replication, dengue virus induces dramatic alterations in the intracellular membranes of infected cells. This phenomenon is observed both in human and vector-derived cells. Using high-resolution mass spectrometry of mosquito cells, we show that this membrane remodeling is directly linked to a unique lipid repertoire induced by dengue virus infection. Specifically, 15% of the metabolites detected were significantly different between DENV infected and uninfected cells while 85% of the metabolites detected were significantly different in isolated replication complex …

Data Curation Profiles Directory

The researchers interviewed for this data curation profile use data from the US Census and other federal and state government sources and process, analyze, and distribute the data on the project website in a way that makes the data more accessible and easier to use. The researchers also produce analytical reports that are also available on the website. The data management needs center around the researchers’ desire to utilize an external data repository to reduce the effort required to maintain the data on their website. The researchers would need the repository to offer similar web APIs to what they currently …

Role Of Trehalose In Salinity And Temperature Tolerance In The Model Halophilic Bacterium Chromohalobacter Salexigens., Mercedes Reina-Bueno, Montserrat Argondona, Manuel Salvador, Javier Rodriguez-Moya, Fernando Iglesias-Guerra, Laszlo Csonka, Joaquin J. Nieto, Carmen Vargas Mar 2012

Role Of Trehalose In Salinity And Temperature Tolerance In The Model Halophilic Bacterium Chromohalobacter Salexigens., Mercedes Reina-Bueno, Montserrat Argondona, Manuel Salvador, Javier Rodriguez-Moya, Fernando Iglesias-Guerra, Laszlo Csonka, Joaquin J. Nieto, Carmen Vargas

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The disaccharide trehalose is considered as a universal stress molecule, protecting cells and biomolecules from injuries imposed by high osmolarity, heat, oxidation, desiccation and freezing. Chromohalobacter salexigens is a halophilic and extremely halotolerant γ-proteobacterium of the family Halomonadaceae. In this work, we have investigated the role of trehalose as a protectant against salinity, temperature and desiccation in C. salexigens. A mutant deficient in the trehalose-6-phosphate synthase gene (otsA::Ω) was not affected in its salt or heat tolerance, but double mutants ectoine- and trehalose-deficient, or hydroxyectoine-reduced and trehalose-deficient, displayed an osmo- and thermosensitive phenotype, respectively. This suggests …

Poplar Gtl1 Is A Ca2+/Calmodulin-Binding Transcription Factor That Functions In Plant Water Use Efficiency And Drought Tolerance., Hua Weng, Chan Yul Yoo, Michael J. Gosney, Paul M. Hasegawa, Michael V. Mickelbart Mar 2012

Poplar Gtl1 Is A Ca2+/Calmodulin-Binding Transcription Factor That Functions In Plant Water Use Efficiency And Drought Tolerance., Hua Weng, Chan Yul Yoo, Michael J. Gosney, Paul M. Hasegawa, Michael V. Mickelbart

Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications

Diminishing global fresh water availability has focused research to elucidate mechanisms of water use in poplar, an economically important species. A GT-2 family trihelix transcription factor that is a determinant of water use efficiency (WUE), PtaGTL1 (GT-2 like 1), was identified in Populus tremula × P. alba (clone 717-IB4). Like other GT-2 family members, PtaGTL1 contains both N- and C-terminal trihelix DNA binding domains. PtaGTL1 expression, driven by the Arabidopsis thaliana AtGTL1 promoter, suppressed the higher WUE and drought tolerance phenotypes of an Arabidopsis GTL1 loss-of-function mutation (gtl1-4). Genetic suppression ofgtl1-4 was associated with increased stomatal density …

Nation In Remarque's All Quiet On The Western Front And Eastwood's Flags Of Our Fathers, Brent M. Smith-Casanueva Mar 2012

Nation In Remarque's All Quiet On The Western Front And Eastwood's Flags Of Our Fathers, Brent M. Smith-Casanueva

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Nation in Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front and Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers" Brent M. Smith-Casanueva explores the commonalities between the antiwar narratives of Erich Maria Remarque's novel All Quiet on the Western Front (1929) and Clint Eastwood's film Flags of our Fathers (2006). Taking the position that narration of nation must be considered a site of hegemonic struggle, Smith-Casanueva argues that both texts employ a similar deconstructive logic to subvert the nationalist discourses and dominant war narratives of their respective nations and the national myths constructed through these narratives. In particular, both All …

Davis's Poetic Dialogue With Leiris's Autobiography, Jonathan Evans Mar 2012

Davis's Poetic Dialogue With Leiris's Autobiography, Jonathan Evans

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Davis's Poetic Dialogue with Leiris's Autobiography" Jonathan Evans analyzes Lydia Davis's translation of the first two parts of Michel Leiris's autobiography, which shows an encounter between two writers. Davis has also written stories which reference Leiris and thus position him as a precursor. Evans proposes that Leiris is not only a source of influence for Davis, but that their texts can be read as a dialogue. Using a methodology that draws on Lacanian psychoanalysis, Evans shows how Leiris focuses on sound and graphological patterns in order to understand his own conscious and unconscious relationship with words. Davis, …

Agronomy / Biofuels - Purdue University, Jake R. Carlson

Data Curation Profiles Directory

The study of a species of switch grass, Miscanthus, and its potential use as a biofuel is addressed in this data curation profile. Specifically, the graduate student studies how Miscanthus cycles nutrients, nitrogen, and carbon and achieves high yields compared to other perennial crops. Although the she recognizes the importance of sharing her data to the greater research community, she is unsure of the resources available to make sharing possible. For her data to be most useful to others it would need to be connected to the article that contains her methodology in generating and working with the data.

Threshold Of Hierarchical Percolating Systems, Jiantong Li, Biswajit Ray, Muhammad Alam, Mikael Ostling Feb 2012

Threshold Of Hierarchical Percolating Systems, Jiantong Li, Biswajit Ray, Muhammad Alam, Mikael Ostling

Birck and NCN Publications

Many modern nanostructured materials and doped polymers are morphologically too complex to be interpreted by classical percolation theory. Here, we develop the concept of a hierarchical percolating (percolation-within-percolation) system to describe such complex materials and illustrate how to generalize the conventional percolation to double-level percolation. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the double-level percolation threshold is close to, but definitely larger than, the product of the local percolation thresholds for the two enclosed single-level systems. The deviation may offer alternative insights into physics concerning infinite clusters and open up new research directions for percolation theory

Many non-native plants in the US have become problematic invaders of native and managed ecosystems, but a new generation of invasive species may be at our doorstep. Here, we review trends in the horticultural trade and invasion patterns of previously introduced species and show that novel species introductions from emerging horticultural trade partners are likely to rapidly increase invasion risk. At the same time, climate change and water restrictions are increasing demand for new types of species adapted to warm and dry environments. This confluence of forces could expose the US to a range of new invasive species, including many …

Migrantstore: Leveraging Virtual Memory In Dram-Pcm Memory Architecture, Hamza Bin Sohail, Balajee Vamanan, T. N. Vijaykumar

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

With the imminent slowing down of DRAM scaling, Phase Change Memory (PCM) is emerging as a lead alternative for main memory technology. While PCM achieves low energy due to various technology-specific advantages, PCM is significantly slower than DRAM (especially for writes) and can endure far fewer writes before wearing out. Previous work has proposed to use a large, DRAM-based hardware cache to absorb writes and provide faster access. However, due to ineffectual caching where blocks are evicted before sufficient number of accesses, hardware caches incur significant overheads in energy and bandwidth, two key but scarce resources in modern multicores. Because …
