The ionome, or elemental profile, of a maize kernel can be viewed in at least two distinct ways. First, the collection of elements within the kernel are food and feed for people and animals. Second, the ionome of the kernel represents a developmental end point that can summarize the life history of a plant, combining genetic programs and environmental interactions. We assert that single-kernel-based phenotyping of the ionome is an effective method of analysis, as it represents a reasonable compromise between precision, efficiency, and power. Here, we evaluate potential pitfalls of this sampling strategy using several field-grown maize sample sets. …

Roads Of Rebellion: Cultural Contributions By Women Of The Beat Generation, Chelsea M. Stripe
Roads Of Rebellion: Cultural Contributions By Women Of The Beat Generation, Chelsea M. Stripe
Open Access Dissertations
"Roads to Rebellion: Cultural Contributions by Women of the Beat Generation" explores female members of a subculture that mythologized the road as a space for escaping Cold War containment. This project begins by redefining Cold War "containment," typically identified as the strategy for controlling communism's spread, to a cultural narrative whose spatial and gendered implications illuminate the complexities of a rebellion hinged on the masculinized road. Through this lens, I explore women's participation in and efforts toward the Beat aesthetic and ethos--performed in domestic spaces or from the road--as examples of the complicated negotiation with the dominant culture and Beat …
Blood, Tears, And Sweat: An Intersectional Excavation Of The Literary Vampire In Neoliberal Discourse, Jessica Elizabeth Birch
Blood, Tears, And Sweat: An Intersectional Excavation Of The Literary Vampire In Neoliberal Discourse, Jessica Elizabeth Birch
Open Access Dissertations
This project engages in a critical examination of the figure of the sympathetic vampire in paranormal romance novels and its relationship to neoliberal individualism, using an analytic frame informed by Valerie Smith's conceptualization of black feminist thinking; it focuses on the portrayal of the neoliberal institutions of nationalism, race, heterosexuality, and motherhood within Jewelle Gomez's The Gilda Stories, L.A. Banks's Minion, and Charlaine Harris's Dead Until Dark. As the ideology of neoliberal individualism has shaped the dominant discourse of the United States, neoliberal individualism has also remade the discourse of monstrosity with regard to vampires. The shifting representation of the …

Jmjc Domain-Containing Histone Demethylase 2 (Jhd2): Bridging The Gap Between H3k4 Trimethylation And H3 Acetylation, Kayla Marie Harmeyer
Open Access Dissertations
Gene expression has been shown to be regulated through epigenetic modifications to the N-terminal tail of histones. Among these modifications is methylation of lysine residues. The enzyme Jhd2 is a histone demethylase that functions to remove H3K4 methylation in S. cerevisiae. Jhd2 is a homologue of the human JARID1 family of histone demethylases, which has four members: JARID1A, B, C and D. JARID1B is of particular interest because it has been shown to be up regulated in 90 percent of primary breast cancers. Furthermore, JARID1A has been shown to be up regulated in gastric cancer. Therefore studying how these H3K4 …

Micromanipulator-Resonator System For Selective Weighing Of Individual Microparticles, Bin-Da Chan

Over the past decade, MEMS-based cantilever sensors have been widely used in the detection of biomolecules, environmental pollutants, chemicals and pathogens. Cantilever-based sensors rely on attachment of target entities on their surface. The attachment causes either change in surface stress or resonance frequency of the cantilever, which is detected using various schemes that range from optical to piezoelectric. The majority of these sensors rely on probabilistic attachment of multiple target entities to the sensor surface. This introduces uncertainties since the location of the adsorbed target entity can modify the signal generated by the sensor. In addition, it does not allow …
The (Statistical) Power Of Mechanical Turk, Amelia Kimball
The (Statistical) Power Of Mechanical Turk, Amelia Kimball
Purdue Linguistic Association Symposium
In this paper, I argue for the use of Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT) in language research. AMT is an online marketplace of paid workers who may be used as subjects, which can greatly increase the statistical power of studies quickly and with minimal funding. I will show that—despite some obvious limitations of using distant subjects—properly designed experiments completed on AMT are trustworthy, cheap, and much faster than traditional face-to-face data collection. Not only this, but AMT workers may help with data analysis, which can greatly increase the scope of research that one researcher may carry out. This paper will first …

Reaching An Underserved Wine Customer: Connecting With The African American Wine Consumer., Rhonda Hammond, Sandra Sydnor, Eunjoo Kang
White Lodging-J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality & Tourism Management Faculty Publications
Marketing strategies addressing underserved African American wine customers’ needs that also positively impact producers’ and retailers’ clientele was the impetus for this exploratory, qualitative paper. African Americans demonstrate a thirst to elevate their education about and be more involved in the wine industry as evidenced by the proliferation of African American wine-tasting groups designed to help educate and expose their membership to a variety of wines. Moreover, compared to the average adult, African-American wine drinkers are 241% more likely to have spent $20 or more on a bottle of store bought wine (Arbitron, 2005). Despite African Americans’ representation as one …

Teaching and Learning Technologies Presentations
Purdue's IT website has a section on instructional technologies, which includes a lot of information about the services we provide. For faculty who know what service they want, this approach works well; however, often we find faculty do not know where to start. Recently, we launched a new companion site, focused on faculty issues and pedagogies that lead to technology use. This session will invite participants to explore the site and provide feedback.

Latent-Heat Augmentation Of Thermocline Energy Storage For Concentrating Solar Power – A System-Level Assessment, S. M. Flueckiger, S V. Garimella
Latent-Heat Augmentation Of Thermocline Energy Storage For Concentrating Solar Power – A System-Level Assessment, S. M. Flueckiger, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Molten-salt thermocline tanks are a low-cost energy storage option for concentrating solar power plants. Despite the potential economic advantage, the capacity of thermocline tanks to store sufficient amounts of high-temperature heat is limited by the low energy density of the constituent sensible-heat storage media. A promising design modification replaces conventional rock filler inside the tank with an encapsulated phase-change material (PCM), contributing a latent heat storage mechanism to increase the overall energy density. The current study presents a new finite-volume approach to simulate mass and energy transport inside a latent heat thermocline tank at low computational cost. This storage model …
Simulated Microstructural Evolution And Design Of Porous Sintered Wicks, K. K. Bodla, S V. Garimella
Simulated Microstructural Evolution And Design Of Porous Sintered Wicks, K. K. Bodla, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Porous structures formed by sintering of powders, which involves material-bonding under the application of heat, are commonly employed as capillary wicks in two-phase heat transport devices such as heat pipes. These sintered wicks are often fabricated in an ad hoc manner, and their microstructure is not optimized for fluid and thermal performance. Understanding the role of sintering kinetics—and the resulting microstructural evolution—on wick transport properties is important for fabrication of structures with optimal performance. A cellular automaton model is developed in this work for predicting microstructural evolution during sintering. The model, which determines mass transport during sintering based on curvature …
Gas Pulsation Control Using A Shunt Pulsation Trap, Paul Xiubao Huang, Sean Yonkers, David Hokey
Gas Pulsation Control Using A Shunt Pulsation Trap, Paul Xiubao Huang, Sean Yonkers, David Hokey
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Gas pulsations commonly exist in HVACR, energy and automotive industry. They are believed to be a major source for system inefficiency, vibrations, noises and fatigue failures. It has been widely accepted that gas pulsations mainly take place at the discharge side of a positive displacement (PD) type compressor such as a screw, scroll or internal combustion engine. The pulsation magnitudes, ranging from a fraction to a few bars, are especially significant at off-design conditions of either under-compression (UC) or over-compression (OC). Traditionally, a serial pulsation dampener, often a reactive type silencer, is connected after the compressor or engine discharge. It …
