Immigrant Women’S Experiences Of Using Mobile Phones: Counting Pennies To Connect Across Continents, Parul Malik, Lorraine Gayle Kisselburgh Mar 2014

Immigrant Women’S Experiences Of Using Mobile Phones: Counting Pennies To Connect Across Continents, Parul Malik, Lorraine Gayle Kisselburgh

ADVANCE-Purdue Gender and STEM Research Symposium

There are many success stories of women around the world using information communication technologies (ITCs) to empower themselves. Most research on ICT-enabled empowerment tends to focus on rural women in emerging economies. Little attention has been paid to their low income, immigrant counterparts living in North American cities. Using 30 interviews with Bangladeshi and Ethiopian women who recently immigrated to New York City, this exploratory study describes the barriers to the use of mobile phones amongst immigrant women. A majority of these women were dependents of construction workers and cab drivers, while the others had operative level positions in retail …

Glycogen Synthase Isoforms In Synechocystis Sp. Pcc6803: Identification Of Different Roles To Produce Glycogen By Targeted Mutagenesis., Sang-Ho Yoo, Byung-Hoo Lee, Youyoun Moon, Martin H. Spalding, Jay-Lin Jane

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 belongs to cyanobacteria which carry out photosynthesis and has recently become of interest due to the evolutionary link between bacteria and plant species. Similar to other bacteria, the primary carbohydrate storage source of Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 is glycogen. While most bacteria are not known to have any isoforms of glycogen synthase, analysis of the genomic DNA sequence of Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 predicts that this strain encodes two isoforms of glycogen synthase (GS) for synthesizing glycogen structure. To examine the functions of the putative GS genes, each gene (sll1393 or sll0945) was disrupted by double …

Electrical And Thermal Conductivities Of Reduced Graphene Oxide/Polystyrene Composites, Wonjung Park, Jiuning Hu, Luis A. Jauregui, Xiulin Ruan, Yong P. Chen

Birck and NCN Publications

The author reports an experimental study of electrical and thermal transport in reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/polystyrene (PS) composites. The electrical conductivity (sigma) of RGO/PS composites with different RGO concentrations at room temperature shows a percolation behavior with the percolation threshold of similar to 0.25 vol. %. Their temperature-dependent electrical conductivity follows Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping conduction in the temperature range of 30-300K. The thermal conductivity (kappa) of composites is enhanced by similar to 90% as the concentration is increased from 0 to 10 vol. %. The thermal conductivity of composites approximately linearly increases with increasing temperature from 150 to 300 …

Taking A Leap Of Faith: Redefining Teaching And Learning In Higher Education Through Project-Based Learning, Jean S. Lee, Sue Blackwell, Jennifer Drake, Kathryn A. Moran Mar 2014

Taking A Leap Of Faith: Redefining Teaching And Learning In Higher Education Through Project-Based Learning, Jean S. Lee, Sue Blackwell, Jennifer Drake, Kathryn A. Moran

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This study examines two aspects of teaching with a project-based learning (PBL) model in higher education settings: faculty definitions of PBL and faculty PBL practices, as evidenced by their self-described successes and challenges in implementation. Faculty participants took “a leap of faith” in their teaching practices to redefine what it means to teach and learn using PBL as an instructional methodology. The findings provide insight into how faculty conceptualization of PBL drives implementation; how the PBL approach challenges college-level teachers; and how instructors’ perceptions of their own role in the PBL process impacts how they implement PBL.

Planning Innovative And Engaging Public Meetings, Rickie Clark, Erin Pipkin, Andrea Farmer

Purdue Road School

One of the most effective yet challenging aspects to public outreach is hosting public meetings. Effective facilitators know that public meetings extend well beyond a PowerPoint presentation. Plans must be made for large crowds, media interviews, renderings and handouts, and collection of feedback. During this presentation, we will discuss best practices, including federal guidelines, for planning public meetings of all sizes. We will also discuss some innovative approaches to public meetings, such as integrating social media and televising the event.

Emergency Response To Bridge Collapse: A Case Study, Lori Swanson, Jeremy Harrison Mar 2014

Emergency Response To Bridge Collapse: A Case Study, Lori Swanson, Jeremy Harrison

Purdue Road School

The ordinary outward appearance of the 9 Mile Road Bridge over I-75 north of Detroit, Michigan, belies the extraordinary story behind its demise and successful reconstruction. After a tanker truck carrying 13,000 gallons of fuel exploded under the bridge, the resulting heat from the explosion collapsed the steel superstructure, forcing MDOT to close I-75 and 9 Mile Road, both of which are heavily traveled corridors. MDOT quickly executed a contract to clean up the debris, temporarily patch the melted freeway pavement, and restore I-75 to traffic. MDOT then focused on reconstructing the overpass using a design-build delivery method. Just 51 …

Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor Splice Variants Are Stable Markers Of Oncogenic Transforming Growth Factor Β1 Signaling In Metastatic Breast Cancers., Michael K. Wendt, Molly A. Taylor, Barbara J. Schiemann, Khalid Sossey-Alaoui, William P. Schiemann

Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications

Introduction

Epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) and mesenchymal–epithelial transition (MET) facilitate breast cancer (BC) metastasis; however, stable molecular changes that result as a consequence of these processes remain poorly defined. Therefore, with the hope of targeting unique aspects of metastatic tumor outgrowth, we sought to identify molecular markers that could identify tumor cells that had completed the EMT:MET cycle.

Methods

An in vivo reporter system for epithelial cadherin (E-cad) expression was used to quantify its regulation in metastatic BC cells during primary and metastatic tumor growth. Exogenous addition of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) was used to induce EMT in an in …

Centering Our Stories: Applying Spatial Metaphors To Writing Center Publicity, Stacy O. Nall Mar 2014

Centering Our Stories: Applying Spatial Metaphors To Writing Center Publicity, Stacy O. Nall

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Graduate Student Presentations

This presentation at the 2014 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) discusses how writing centers can use digital spaces to position themselves as assets to their campus and local communities. While most writing centers have pages on their universities’ websites, there continue to be new ways that writing centers can take advantage of these spaces to make their work more visible to wider publics. One way they can do so, the presenter suggests, is through publishing stories about and by the people with whom they partner. These stories give greater visibility not only to achievements, but also help to …

Embodied Cognition And The Grotesque In Calvino's La Giornata D'Uno Scrutatore And Sanguineti's Capriccio Italiano, Marco Caracciolo Mar 2014

Embodied Cognition And The Grotesque In Calvino's La Giornata D'Uno Scrutatore And Sanguineti's Capriccio Italiano, Marco Caracciolo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Embodied Cognition and the Grotesque in Calvino's La giornata d'uno scrutatore and Sanguineti's Capriccio italiano" Marco Caracciolo analyzes the multiple dimensions of embodied experience and how they can be brought to bear on literary texts. Drawing on scholarship in cognitive science, he argues that the embodiment of people's engagement with the world emerges from the interaction between the physical structure of the body and socio-cultural practices. Caracciolo shows how such nexus of biological make-up and culture can give rise to particularly complex meanings in the representation of grotesque bodies. In order to illustrate his postulates, Caracciolo …

Intertextuality In Beckett's And Ağaoğlu's Work, Elmas Şahín Mar 2014

Intertextuality In Beckett's And Ağaoğlu's Work, Elmas Şahín

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Intertextuality in Beckett's and Ağaoğlu's Work" Elmas Şahín discusses Adalet Ağaoğlu's 1973 novel Ölmeye Yatmak (Lying Down to Die) and Samuel Beckett's 1950 Malone Dies in terms of intertextuality. Şahín employs tenets of comparative literature in order to analyze the two texts with regard to form and content and focuses on the on protagonists' worlds. In Şahín's interpretation, Ağaoğlu's protagonist Aysel is narrated in postmodern intertextuality as an individual of our days alienated from society, searching for her self/selves as she cannot succeed in dying. Both Beckett's and Ağaoğlu's protagonists attempt to "escape" from their selves and …

Duvakin's Oral History And Bakhtin In His Own Voice, Slav N. Gratchev, Tatevik Gyulamiryan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Duvakin's Oral History and Bakhtin in His Own Voice" Slav N. Gratchev and Tatevik Gyulamiryan examine Mikhail Bakhtin's notions of literary theory based on interviews recorded by Victor Duvakin in 1973. The collection is now held in the library of Moscow State University. As it so often happened in the Soviet Union, these unique interviews only became known many years later and Gratchev's and Gyulamiryan's analysis of the interviews sheds light on Bakhtin's thought not available when reading his published work.

Conservative Evolution, Sustainability, And Culture, Gábor Náray-Szabó Mar 2014

Conservative Evolution, Sustainability, And Culture, Gábor Náray-Szabó

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Conservative Evolution, Sustainability, and Culture" Gábor Náray-Szabó argues that evolution is conservative in the sense that throughout the history of the universe old constructs like elementary particles, amino acids, and living cells remained conserved while the world evolved/evolves in complexity. A similar process can be observed in cultural evolution as components of society and culture continue to evolve. Considering the increasing pressure on natural resources by material consumption, a close alliance between past, present, and future generations is unavoidable and thus Náray-Szabó posits that concepts of conservative evolution and sustainability are related. However, in order to avoid …

History And Identity In Post-Totalitarian Memoir Writing In Romanian, Nicoleta D. Ifrim Mar 2014

History And Identity In Post-Totalitarian Memoir Writing In Romanian, Nicoleta D. Ifrim

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "History and Identity in Post-Totalitarian Memoir Writing in Romanian" Nicoleta D. Ifrim analyzes Virgil Tănase's confessional and ego-graphic writing in his 2011 Leapșa pe murite (Playing Fetch with Death). Tănase's text is about the individual caught in history and re-writes it post-traumatically from a double perspective: that of the collective memory of totalitarianism and the personal thus functioning as a filtering mechanism for the creation of meta-historical identity. For Tănase, the experience of exile and post-exile, as well as the confrontation with the West legitimizes identity dilemmas and the construction of the individual. The book is representative …

Electronic Journals, Prestige, And The Economics Of Academic Journal Publishing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, Joshua Jia Mar 2014

Electronic Journals, Prestige, And The Economics Of Academic Journal Publishing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, Joshua Jia

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Electronic Journals, Prestige, and the Economics of Academic Journal Publishing" Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and Joshua Jia discuss the current state of the academic journal publishing industry. The current state of the industry is an oligopoly based on a double appropriation model where academics produce work for at no cost only to have publishers earn significant profit margins by selling the work back to academics. Publishers are able to do this given the price inelasticity and weak bargaining power of its main consumer, university libraries. Publishers' ability to increase prices is also supported by what the authors …

Conexiones: Fostering Socioscientific Inquiry In Graduate Teacher Preparation, Krista Glazewski, Michele I. Shuster Phd, Thomas Brush, Andrea Ellis

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Socioscientific Inquiry (SSI) represents one approach designed to target interest and knowledge in science. In this context, students consider scientific issues that have social implications and require a range of trade-offs, concepts, and considerations in order to arrive at informed conclusions (Sadler, 2004). However, inquiry tasks in general and SSI projects in particular are not widely adopted in K-12 settings, despite strong beliefs among teachers that these types of activities are valuable (Marshall, Horton, Igo, & Switzer, 2009). We suggest Collaborative Action Research may provide an important platform for enabling teachers to experience success through systematic investigations of their practice …

2012 Dewey Lecture: Making Meaning Together Beyond Theory And Practice, Jim Garrison Feb 2014

2012 Dewey Lecture: Making Meaning Together Beyond Theory And Practice, Jim Garrison

Education and Culture

Educators frequently fret over how to bridge the gap between theory and practice. In an important sense, it is a false problem. Theory is simply the thoughtful, reflective phase of good practice. We will approach Dewey’s philosophy as one of continuous creation and re-creation or even more precisely, social co-creation, that requires making meaning, knowledge, and value together. We will look at each one of these three in some detail along with the ways they transact with one another. Fundamentally, we can only distinguish them for some purposes, but never fully separate them. Everywhere we look, we will see we …
