Curricular Requirements, Critical Traditions, And Adaptation In The Paratext Of Chinese And American School Editions Of Robinson Crusoe, Haifeng Hui
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Curricular Requirements, Critical Traditions, and Adaptation in the Paratext of Chinese and American School Editions of Robinson Crusoe" Haifeng Hui analyses a Chinese new curricular edition and an American common core edition of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe to reveal how the paratext can be utilized to reveal different ways of understanding in different educational cultures. He argues that the paratext powerfully exerts the publisher's authority over the text and the reader, thus shaping readers' interpretation of the story in the service of fulfilling specific national curricular needs. The Chinese edition aims more at how Crusoe's story should …
A Comparative Minoritarian Study Of Language Poetry Of Iran And The United States, Sama Khosravi Ooryad
A Comparative Minoritarian Study Of Language Poetry Of Iran And The United States, Sama Khosravi Ooryad
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "A Comparative Minoritarian Study of Language Poetry of Iran and the United States" Sama Khosravi Ooryad analyses Language poetry of the United States (1970s) and Language poetry of Iran (1990s) through Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's concepts of minor literature and rhizomic text. The argument of the article is that the two movements, in both their poems and theoretical passages, carry potentialities to be related to Deleuzian concepts. The practice of minor literature, rhizomic text and book as machine is more evident in the works of U.S. language poets. Moreover, Iranian language poetry, while being analyzed alongside …
China And The Politics Of Cross–Cultural Representation In Interwar European Fiction, Carles Prado-Fonts
China And The Politics Of Cross–Cultural Representation In Interwar European Fiction, Carles Prado-Fonts
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "China and the Politics of Cross–Cultural Representation in Interwar European Fiction" Carles Prado-Fonts analyzes Joan Crespi's La ciutat de la por (The City of Fear, 1930) to illustrate the varied representations of China in interwar Europe. In the 1920s and 1930s, a plurality of views on China and the Chinese people became widespread across different parts of Europe, mainly shaped by English, French, and German representations. Contradictory images of China coexisted in literature, thought, and popular culture. Crespi's work exemplifies these contradictions: China appears as both an attainable reality and an unreachable fantasy, two tropes that prevailed …

Out Of The Box: Researching A Divided Country, Christian Clase, Melissa Deach, Lauren Feagler, Sarah Weaver
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
A group of undergraduate students from Purdue University’s Department of Political Science and the Brian Lamb School of Communication attended the 2017 Presidential Inauguration and subsequent Women’s March on Washington to research political divisions in America. For many of the students, this was their first experience with qualitative research.

Spatial Soundscape Ecology: Application In A Paleotropical Rainforest, Jack Vanschaik
Spatial Soundscape Ecology: Application In A Paleotropical Rainforest, Jack Vanschaik
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
The world’s biodiversity is declining with much of the decrease attributed to human activity. The paleotropical rainforests of Borneo contribute 10% of the world biodiversity but are at risk of destruction due to logging and other human interests. Soundscape ecology, defi ned as the study of the composition of sounds in an environment, is a new fi eld that offers solutions for assessing biodiversity and disturbance. Spatial dynamics are an important component of an ecosystem, yet the link between spatial dynamics and soundscapes has not yet been studied. It should be possible to assess disturbance of an ecosystem by analyzing …
Predicting Advertisement Clicks Using Deep Networks: Interpreting Deep Learning Models, Karan Samel
Predicting Advertisement Clicks Using Deep Networks: Interpreting Deep Learning Models, Karan Samel
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Deep learning has achieved state-of-the-art results in a variety of tasks such as classifying images and driverless cars. In this paper, I used deep learning to understand consumer product interests. One of the main goals for advertisement agencies is to develop mathematical models to predict whether consumers will click on their advertisement. Achieving the highest click prediction rate means that these agencies can pay to place their online advertisements effectively to target people most interested in their product. Most existing approaches are based on logistic regression or regression tree models (Trofi mov, Kornetova, & Topinskiy, 2012). The model based on …
Animal-Assisted Activities: Effects Of Animals On Positive Emotional Display In Children In Inclusion Classrooms, Gayatri Mazgaonkar
Animal-Assisted Activities: Effects Of Animals On Positive Emotional Display In Children In Inclusion Classrooms, Gayatri Mazgaonkar
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Animals are commonly present in classrooms and may be an important tool in enhancing children’s experiences, especially in inclusion classrooms that provide integrative learning for both typically developing children and children with special needs.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of animal-assisted activities on children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as well was typically developing (TD) children in inclusion classrooms.
Ninety-nine children from 15 inclusion classrooms were divided into groups of three (two TD children and one child with ASD) to take part in free play sessions with either two guinea pigs or a set of …
The Role Of Vitamin D In Breast Cancer: Investigating Potential Inhibition Through Matrix Metalloproteinase 2, Hyesoo Chae
The Role Of Vitamin D In Breast Cancer: Investigating Potential Inhibition Through Matrix Metalloproteinase 2, Hyesoo Chae
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States, with 99% of breast cancer patients surviving fi ve years after diagnosis if the tumor is localized. However, if the tumor has metastasized, the survival rate decreases to 22%. Epidemiological and animal studies, as well as previous studies from our laboratory in in vitro 3D cell culture models, support the hypothesis that vitamin D may inhibit breast cancer metastasis in humans, but the mechanisms remain unknown. The purpose of the present studies was to investigate the effect of the bioactive vitamin D metabolite, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin …
