The Minute Business Challenge: Connecting Undergraduates And The Community Through Critical Thinking, Shannon Kane Oct 2017

The Minute Business Challenge: Connecting Undergraduates And The Community Through Critical Thinking, Shannon Kane

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

In spring 2015, Melissa Evens, Director of the Undergraduate Communication Studio at Krannert, asked Shannon Kane to design an activity to be showcased at Purdue’s Annual Spring Fest. Having been given quite a bit of creative freedom, she hoped to develop an event that would not only create awareness of management careers among the local youth, but also encourage Krannert undergraduate students to become more involved in the local community. With these goals in mind, she developed the Minute Business Challenge (MBC), an activity that presents community members of all ages with real-world business problems and gives them the opportunity …

Aquifer Vulnerability Assessment For Sustainable Groundwater Management Using Drastic, Won Seok Jang, Bernard Engel, Jon Harbor, Larry Theller Oct 2017

Aquifer Vulnerability Assessment For Sustainable Groundwater Management Using Drastic, Won Seok Jang, Bernard Engel, Jon Harbor, Larry Theller

School of Agricultural & Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Groundwater management and protection has been facilitated by computational modeling of aquifer vulnerability and monitoring aquifers using groundwater sampling. The DRASTIC (Depth to water, Recharge, Aquifer media, Soil media, Topography, Impact of vadose zone media, and hydraulic Conductivity) model, an overlay and index GIS model, has been used for groundwater quality assessment because it relies on simple, straightforward methods. Aquifer vulnerability mapping identifies areas with high pollution potential that can be areas for priority management and monitoring. The objectives of this study are to demonstrate how aquifer vulnerability assessment can be achieved using DRASTIC with high resolution data. This includes …

The Goldwater Rule: Perspectives From, And Implications For, Psychological Science, Scott O. Lilienfeld, Joshua D. Miller, Donald R. Lynam Oct 2017

The Goldwater Rule: Perspectives From, And Implications For, Psychological Science, Scott O. Lilienfeld, Joshua D. Miller, Donald R. Lynam

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

When, if ever, should psychological scientists be permitted to offer professional opinions concerning the mental health of public figures they have never directly examined? This contentious question, which attracted widespread public attention during the 1964 U.S. presidential election involving Barry Goldwater, received renewed scrutiny during and after the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, when many mental health professionals raised pointed questions concerning the psychiatric status of Donald Trump. Although the Goldwater Rule prohibits psychiatrists from offering diagnostic opinions on individuals they have never examined, no comparable rule exists for psychologists. We contend that, owing largely to the Goldwater Rule’s origins in …

Vfr-Into-Imc Accident Trends: Perceptions Of Deficiencies In Training, Wesley L. Major, Thomas Carney, Julius Keller, Allen Xie, Matt Price, John Duncan, Lori Brown, Geoffrey R. Whitehurst, William G. Rantz, Dominic Nicolai, Beth M. Beaudin-Seiler Oct 2017

Vfr-Into-Imc Accident Trends: Perceptions Of Deficiencies In Training, Wesley L. Major, Thomas Carney, Julius Keller, Allen Xie, Matt Price, John Duncan, Lori Brown, Geoffrey R. Whitehurst, William G. Rantz, Dominic Nicolai, Beth M. Beaudin-Seiler

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Pilots who operate under visual flight rules (VFR) and in visual meteorological conditions, who then continue flight into instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), remain as one of the leading causes of fatal aircraft accidents in general aviation. This paper examines past and current research initiatives, in seeking to identify causal factors and gaps in training that lead to VFR-into-IMC aircraft accidents, using a mixed methods approach. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Air Safety Institute database and the National Transportation Safety Board database search engines were used to identify accident reports associated with VFR flight into IMC/deteriorating weather conditions for a …

Assessing The Benefits Of Performance-Based Navigation Procedures, Kabir O. Kasim Oct 2017

Assessing The Benefits Of Performance-Based Navigation Procedures, Kabir O. Kasim

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Performance-based Navigation (PBN) allows aviation operations to be conducted based on actual operational requirements rather than the requirements of ground-based equipment. Although the general operational benefits of PBN procedures have been recognized by various studies, there is a need to specify the actual benefits in terms of the frequency of event anomalies that could be expected from the use of PBN procedures. The study reviewed some of the available literature and identified some operational improvements as reported by previous authors. The study then proceeded to review archival data from the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) database with a view to …

The Global History Of Art And The Challenge Of The Grand Narrative, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel Sep 2017

The Global History Of Art And The Challenge Of The Grand Narrative, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

It might seem rather early to propose an assessment of the famous ‘global turn’ in the history of art. However, the challenge of globalisation and of the ‘decolonization’ of our thought is now a daily preoccupation for many art historians. In order to propose a ‘global history’, one that would do justice to art from all continents, and in particular from those that have long been neglected and scorned, the ideal solution comes in the form of an articulation of a truly global narrative. Where could these new stories come from? We have sought to interrogate actors from the world …

Vfr-Into-Imc: An Analysis Of Two Training Protocols On Weather-Related Posttest Scores, Julius C. Keller, Thomas Carney, Allen Xie, Wesley Major, Matt Price Sep 2017

Vfr-Into-Imc: An Analysis Of Two Training Protocols On Weather-Related Posttest Scores, Julius C. Keller, Thomas Carney, Allen Xie, Wesley Major, Matt Price

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

According to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Air Safety Institute, 264 accidents were identified as continued visual flight rules (VFR) into instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), during the past ten years. Approximately 89% of those VFR-into-IMC accidents were fatal, causing hundreds of deaths. VFR-into-IMC has been a major concern for the general aviation community, prompting focused efforts. Research, data analyses, outreach, training, and education are recommended practices to address risks associated with VFR-into-IMC. Researchers of the current study sought to evaluate the cause and effect relationship between two training protocols and weather-related posttest scores. A pretest–posttest experimental design was utilized …

Coping With The Subterranean Environment: A Thematic Content Analysis Of The Narratives Of Cave Explorers, Raymond R. Macneil, Jelena Brcic Sep 2017

Coping With The Subterranean Environment: A Thematic Content Analysis Of The Narratives Of Cave Explorers, Raymond R. Macneil, Jelena Brcic

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

In addition to various physical obstacles, the cave environment presents numerous psychological stressors that challenge human explorers. Sources of psychological stress include logistic issues (e.g., limitations to access, communication, and the availability of equipment), a lack of normal sensory stimuli, isolation and confinement, high performance demands, and social conflict associated with team coordination and requirements for cooperation. Thus, the success and safety of caving expeditions depend on the ability of explorers to effectively cope with highly stressful conditions and task demands. This was the first study to investigate coping within the context of caving and cave exploration. Utilizing scoring criteria …

Molecular Structure And Confining Environment Of Sn Sites In Single-Site Chabazite Zeolites, James W. Harris, Wei-Chih Liao, John R. Di Iorio, Alisa M. Henry, Ta-Chung Ong, Aleix Comas-Vives, Christopher Coperet, Rajamani Gounder Sep 2017

Molecular Structure And Confining Environment Of Sn Sites In Single-Site Chabazite Zeolites, James W. Harris, Wei-Chih Liao, John R. Di Iorio, Alisa M. Henry, Ta-Chung Ong, Aleix Comas-Vives, Christopher Coperet, Rajamani Gounder

School of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Chabazite (CHA) molecular sieves, which are industrial catalysts for the selective reduction of nitrogen oxides and the conversion of methanol into olefins, are also ideal materials in catalysis research because their crystalline frameworks contain one unique tetrahedral-site. The presence of a single lattice site allows for more accurate descriptions of experimental data using theoretical models, and consequently for more precise structure-function relationships of active sites incorporated into framework positions. A direct hydrothermal synthesis route to prepare pure-silica chabazite molecular sieves substituted with framework Sn atoms (Sn-CHA) is developed, which is required to predominantly incorporate Sn within the crystalline lattice. Quantitative …

Governmental Discourses In Advertising On Iran's State, Azra Ghandeharion, Morteza Yazdanjoo Sep 2017

Governmental Discourses In Advertising On Iran's State, Azra Ghandeharion, Morteza Yazdanjoo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Governmental Discourses in Advertising on Iran's State Television" Azra Ghandeharion and Morteza Yazdanjoo apply a comparative cultural studies approach to examining Iran's State television (IRIB) advertising directions under two distinct political eras: Conservative era (2011-2013) and Moderate Reformist era (2013-2015). The transition from the former to the latter is reflected in Iran's national and international diplomacies, where the influence of this shift can be traced both at macro and micro levels. Ghandeharion and Yazdanjoo analyze this shift at the micro level by comparing IRIB's beauty-product advertisements broadcasted during the two political eras. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) enables …

The Maze Of Shanghai Memory In Kazuo Ishiguro's When We Were Orphans, Biwu Shang Sep 2017

The Maze Of Shanghai Memory In Kazuo Ishiguro's When We Were Orphans, Biwu Shang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Maze of Shanghai Memory in Kazuo Ishiguro's When We Were Orphans" Biwu Shang analyzes the memory writing of the novel by combining current memory studies with narratology. The paper pursues three major goals. First, it delves into the maze of Shanghai memory embedded in this novel, which is typically formulated by two contrasting aspects: Christopher Banks's naïve and beautiful childhood memory of Shanghai, and his unhappy adulthood memory of it. Second, it explores how memory plays a dual function of deception and decoration. That is to say, Christopher deliberately uses his memory to create positive …
