Prediction Of Airflow Resistivity Of Fibrous Acoustical Media Having Double Fiber Components And A Distribution Of Fiber Radii, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton, Ronald W. Gerdes, Seungkyu Lee, Thomas Herdtle
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Presented here is a new airflow resistivity (AFR) prediction model that accounts for situations in which a fibrous medium comprises more than one fiber component, and when the radius of each fiber component varies within a certain range. The study started with the evaluation of existing AFR models, which were mostly developed for single-component fibrous media with uniform radius (SCUR). After comparing the SCUR predictions results with AFR measurements of different single-component fiber samples, a model of Tarnow’s was shown to yield reasonable prediction accuracy and was chosen as the starting point for further development. The Tarnow model was first …
Failure As Process: Interrogating Disaster, Loss, And Recovery In Digital Preservation, Carly Dearborn, Sam Meister
Failure As Process: Interrogating Disaster, Loss, And Recovery In Digital Preservation, Carly Dearborn, Sam Meister
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Disaster, loss, and failure preoccupy the minds of many digital preservation professionals and yet, despite the prominence of digital disaster planning guidelines which seem to anticipate failure, there is limited discussion of experience with preservation system or network failures, which are often framed as inevitable in digital preservation. Despite this framing, negative perceptions of failure influence the digital preservation discourse by associating failure with poor planning, unreliability, and untrustworthiness on the part of institutions. This article will interrogate the issue of failure within the digital preservation field and consider the need for more conversations around network failure and recovery. The …

Influence Of Adsorbed And Nonadsorbed Polymer Additives On The Viscosity Of Magnesium Oxide Suspensions, Lisa R. Murray, Jason E Bice, Emily G. Soltys, Christopher Perge, Sebastien Manneville, Kendra Erk
School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Adsorbed polymer additives have been employed to reduce water content and improve cement workability through lowering viscosity, but the influence of over-dosage and the presence of nonadsorbed chains have yet to be fully understood. Model magnesium oxide (MgO) suspensions were used to investigate the potential processing effect of “free” chain concentration on cementitious mixtures. The rheological impact of the free chains was measured through incorporation of nonadsorbing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to suspensions stabilized with an adsorbed comb-polymer superplasticizer. Analyses of the rheological data, that showed viscosity-increases and viscosity-reduction due to free PEG concentrations revealed a transition from depletion flocculation to …
Determining The Role Of Epigenetic Factors In Antifungal Drug Resistance, Abigail R. Gress, Scott D. Briggs, Nina Serratore
Determining The Role Of Epigenetic Factors In Antifungal Drug Resistance, Abigail R. Gress, Scott D. Briggs, Nina Serratore
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Epigenetic factors are proteins that regulate gene expression by altering transcriptional machinery access to nucleosomes, DNA wrapped around histone proteins. Two classes of epigenetic factors are ATP-dependent chromatin remodelers and histone modifiers such as histone methyltransferases (HMTs), proteins that add methyl groups to histone tails. This study focuses on AIF4 (Antifungal-Induced Factor 4), a possible HMT induced upon neutral lipid depletion that we hypothesize is regulating antifungal drug resistance genes. Overexpression of AIF4 results in hypersensitivity to antifungal drugs. Studying epigenetic factors in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, including AIF4, can lead to better understanding of cell adaptation to their environments …
Understanding Powder Compaction With Single Particle Measurements, Wentao Chen, Ankit Agarwal, Marcial Gonzalez
Understanding Powder Compaction With Single Particle Measurements, Wentao Chen, Ankit Agarwal, Marcial Gonzalez
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Powder compaction is the process of transforming granular media into a solid body with a high relative density (low porosity) and a unique anisotropic microstructure. It is critical to understand the physical mechanisms of the compaction process in order to identify powder properties and optimal process parameters for achieving desired properties of the final product. Tools that can simulate particle rearrangement and deformation during the compaction process are usually developed to guide such fundamental understanding. This study aims at understanding powder compaction using particle mechanics approach. Specifically, it employs the nonlocal contact formulation to predict the contact behavior of a …

Regulation Of Dna Synthesis: The Identification Of New Drosophila Melanogaster Cdc7 Regulatory Subunits, Benjamin D. Anderson, Eliana Torres Zelada, Robert E. Stephenson, Vikki M. Weake
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Cell division cycle 7 (Cdc7) is an enzyme required for the initiation of DNA replication. Cdc7 cannot act alone requiring the binding of its regulatory subunit Dbf4 to perform its enzymatic function. Previous studies show that Dbf4 and Cdc7 are well conserved across eukaryotic organisms. Humans and Xenopus have multiple Cdc7 regulatory subunits, and recent studies suggest that Drosophila melanogaster might as well. Human Dbf4 was discovered because of its similarity to yeast Dbf4. It is possible that finding additional Cdc7 regulatory subunits in D. melanogaster could reveal related proteins in humans. As cancer is a disease caused by improper …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Real-time social media platforms enable quick information broadcasting and response during disasters and emergencies. Analyzing the massive amount of generated data to understand the human behavior requires data collection and acquisition, parsing, filtering, augmentation, processing, and representation. Visual analytics approaches allow decision makers to observe trends and abnormalities, correlate them with other variables and gain invaluable insight into these situations. In this paper, we propose a set of visual analytic tools for analyzing and understanding real-time social media data in times of crisis and emergency situations. First, we model the degree of risk of individuals’ movement based on evacuation zones …

Mathematical Description And Mechanistic Reasoning: A Pathway Toward Stem Integration, Paul J. Weinberg
Mathematical Description And Mechanistic Reasoning: A Pathway Toward Stem Integration, Paul J. Weinberg
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Because reasoning about mechanism is critical to disciplined inquiry in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) domains, this study focuses on ways to support the development of this form of reasoning. This study attends to how mechanistic reasoning is constituted through mathematical description. This study draws upon Smith’s (2007) characterization of mathematical description of scientific phenomena as ‘‘bootstrapping,’’ where negotiating the relationship between target phenomena and represented relations is fundamental to learning. In addition, the development of mathematical representation presents a viable pathway towards STEM integration. In this study, participants responded to an assessment of mechanistic reasoning while cognitive interviews …
The Application Of Microperforated Panels In Duct Systems, Seungkyu Lee, Thomas P. Hanschen, J Stuart Bolton
The Application Of Microperforated Panels In Duct Systems, Seungkyu Lee, Thomas P. Hanschen, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Microperforated panels (MPPs) are usually considered to be an alternative sound absorbing surface treatment in architectural acoustics applications, where they can serve as effective, fiber-free replacements for the more traditional glass fibers and other porous materials. However, the areas in which MPPs may be applied are not only limited to the replacement of conventional sound absorbing materials, but MPPs can also be used in spaces where more conventional materials cannot be conveniently used. For example, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) duct application is one area where MPPs can be used as a stand-alone material,in contrast with glass fiber, which …

Kisses Sweeter Than Wine. Öyvind Fahlström And Billy Klüver: The Swedish Neo-Avant-Garde In New York, Per Bäckström
Artl@s Bulletin
The Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström moved to New York in 1961, where he meet the Swedish engineer Billy Klüver, and became part of the international neo-avant-garde movement. Fahlström’s performance, New York 1966, part of Klüver’s performance series 9 Evenings, is my point of departure for an analysis of the role of migration for the neo-avant-gardes in the 1960s. As intermediaries, Fahlström and Klüver brought new ideas both to New York and Stockholm, thus challenging the established view that American art was exported to the periphery. In reality, the New York art scene grew out of ideas and experiences arriving …
Artistic Emigration From Portugal To Paris In The First Half Of The 1960s: Six Portuguese Painters From Paris Revisited, Joana Baião
Artl@s Bulletin
This paper proposes to revisit some issues related to the impact of emigration on the paths followed by a group of six Portuguese painters who settled in Paris between 1958 and 1961. To do that, it will analyze and contextualize the evolution of their work in the first half of the 1960’s, and it will recall the small exhibition Seis Pintores Portugueses de Paris that opened in 1966 in Lisbon with the purpose of highlight the particularities of the artistic research that was being developed by those artists in Paris, integrating them into the international artistic movements of the period.
« Dégénérés » En France. Tentatives De Définition D'Une Identité Collective Par Les Artistes Germaniques Exilés En France À La Fin Des Années 1930, Hélène Duret
Artl@s Bulletin

Weight Minimization Of Noise Treatments By Balancing Absorption And Transmission Performance, Hyunjun Shin, J Stuart Bolton
Weight Minimization Of Noise Treatments By Balancing Absorption And Transmission Performance, Hyunjun Shin, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Generally, heavier noise control treatments are favored over lighter treatments since heavier acoustic materials generally insulate (block) the noise source more effectively. For automotive applications, however, heavier materials cannot necessarily be adopted because of concerns about the total weight of the vehicle. Thus, it is desired to have lighter acoustic materials to mitigate the vehicle interior noise for the purpose of the weight minimization. Acoustical materials used in automobiles have both absorption and transmission characteristics, and there is necessarily a trade off between these two. Therefore, it is important to study the exchange between the absorption and transmission of acoustic …

The Model Minority Stereotype As A Prescribed Guideline Of Empire: Situating The Model Minority Research In The Postcolonial Context, Eun Hee Kim, Kay Ann Taylor
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
It has been 50 years since the term, model minority, first appeared in the United States to describe Asian Americans as an ethnic group that overcame the image of the “yellow peril” and successfully climbed the social ladder. Scholars have tried to debunk the myth and reveal racism behind the notion. However, the “over-education” view has flourished in Asian American Studies as the most popular research direction, serving the socioeconomic self-interest of professors with highly educated Asian Americans as research subjects (Sakamoto, Takei, & Woo, 2012). To refute the “over-education” view and meet the contextual need to generate a new …

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
The model minority myth is a powerful force in schools. Many teachers believe that Asian American students do not need academic interventions. The purpose of this study was to examine the student achievement of almost a million seventh-grade students from California. The research compared the performance of Southeast Asian Americans, Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese students, on reading and math on the CAT/6 standardized assessment with African American and White American students. Cambodian American and Laotian American students performed significantly lower than their White American peers and compared similarly to their African American peers. Vietnamese American students also scored lower than …
Art History And The Global Challenge: A Critical Perspective, Paula Barreiro López
Art History And The Global Challenge: A Critical Perspective, Paula Barreiro López
Artl@s Bulletin
The challenge of globalization and the “decolonization” of our way of thinking have become a major concern for most art historians. While it is still too early to assess the impact on the discipline of the “Global turn”—a turn that is all the more timid that it materializes more slowly in public collections and public opinions than in books—we nonetheless wanted to probe scholars who are paying close attention to the new practices in global art history. Coming from different cultural milieus and academic traditions, and belonging to different generations, they agreed to answer our questions, and to share with …
The Significance Of Dewey’S Democracy And Education For 21st-Century Education, Lance E. Mason
The Significance Of Dewey’S Democracy And Education For 21st-Century Education, Lance E. Mason
Education and Culture
This paper explores the significance of Dewey’s Democracy and Education for “21st-century education,” a term used by proponents of curricular standardization and digital ubiquity in classrooms. Though these domains have distinct advocacy groups, they often share similar assumptions about the primary purposes of schooling as career preparation. In Democracy and Education, Dewey argues for a broader purpose of education—that of cultivating a social spirit in students. Because of contemporary dispositional challenges in the broader society, Dewey’s perspective offers a timely and relevant way to reconceptualize the purposes of schooling in ways that can effectively address current social challenges.
