Flat budgets, rising subscription rates, and the need to communicate the (bad) news to librarians and faculty are part of the academic library landscape. Additionally, the University of Vermont recently implemented incentivebased budgeting, requiring financial transparency and demonstration of value to community stakeholders. Collaborative efforts between liaison librarians and collection management departments are increasingly necessary as libraries work to support research, teaching, and learning with fewer resources. This article will focus on the venues and the mechanisms that facilitate a culture of librarians sharing information across departments about financial realities within the libraries and the university to promote cooperative decision-making …

Stay Calm And Cover Your Assessment: Creating A Culture Of Assessment On A Shoestring, Audrey Powers, Susan Silver, Matthew C. Torrence

Academic libraries engage in assessment for a variety of reasons. Improving processes, responding to customer needs, fulfilling accreditation reporting requirements, and demonstrating impact and value to the institution are just a few. Many academic libraries find themselves in the position of being required to prove they are fulfilling a mission that contributes to the academic success of students and their value to the institution. Assessment is no longer a choice for libraries—it has become an expectation. Although most libraries are already doing some form of assessment, there seems to be little effort in many institutions to build a culture of …
An Electronic Resources Workflow Is Worth A Thousand Words, Christine Davidian, Lauren Orner
An Electronic Resources Workflow Is Worth A Thousand Words, Christine Davidian, Lauren Orner
Charleston Library Conference
The processes involved in managing electronic resources are complex. They are becoming even more so with the addition of streaming media, demand-driven acquisitions (DDA), evidence-based subscriptions, weeding, and unanticipated changes. Rowan University’s electronic resources group recently documented its electronic resource management workflows in order to a) communicate complex processes to a diverse group of library stakeholders such as reference and instruction librarians, collection development professionals, acquisitions, and technology and systems staff; b) provide guidelines to train new employees; and c) to establish a record of current processes for future reference, evaluation, and revision of workflows. This poster session shows how …

Undergraduate and graduate students are increasingly being encouraged to work with faculty and researchers to generate traditional scholarship, as well as other types of projects that feature original content. Through this process, students are more frequently taking on roles as researchers, authors, and publishers. Student scholarship and student-run publications are valuable to the scholarly record, representing the nascent activities of the next generation of scholars, but also serving as an academic playground for emergent forms of publishing and media. Furthermore, students who manage publications gain practical skills that transfer to a variety of careers in academia and private industry. However, …
Catching Their Attention! Using Nonformal Information Sources To Captivate And Motivate Undergraduates During Library Sessions, Jacqueline Howell Nash
Catching Their Attention! Using Nonformal Information Sources To Captivate And Motivate Undergraduates During Library Sessions, Jacqueline Howell Nash

Students at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica are required to complete a course on research and writing for academic purposes. Students are scheduled to visit the library for a hands-on session in the library’s computer laboratory. How can we motivate them to acquire the research skills required in academia? We must first capture their immediate attention and then encourage their academic curiosity. How can we stimulate them to become information detectives? What are the nonacademic sources of information that have impacted the lives of Caribbean students prior to arrival at university? It wasn’t the journals or scholarly …

Film collections in academic libraries, including streaming video and DVDs, serve a variety of user populations and needs. Videos are used by faculty as part of instruction, by student clubs or other groups as part of public programming, and by individuals for personal study or entertainment. These various use situations are addressed by the Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. sec. 101 et seq., and license agreements that accompany video purchases. To maximize use of video collections, and by extension, funds expended on video collections, libraries need to fully understand their rights under the law, track video licenses, and build access around …

"A library collection should fit the mission for which it is created. The number of books it holds does not determine its worth." (E. J. Loveland, 2000)
If so, how do we create a national library, and how do we build its collection from scratch without making many mistakes? Since 2012, when the plans for the new national library were announced, Qatar National Library (QNL) envisioned as carrying out its mission to "spread knowledge, nurture imagination, cultivate creativity, and preserve the nation’s heritage for future generations” through three functions: National library, university and research library, and a metropolitan public library. …

During a time of stagnating budgets and rising journal costs, Central Washington University’s Brooks Library evaluated and added a popular print magazine collection and worked with faculty to eliminate redundant and low-use resources. The process of identifying the need, researching, evaluating, and gaining student input for popular magazines to be added to a recently opened coffee shop is addressed first. Secondly, the systematic approach the library used to identify journal titles received in multiple formats and low-use/high-cost resources then worked with faculty to change access models to realize a net savings is discussed. Throughout, insights are provided into the processes …
Rolling With Pda And Dda: How Academic Libraries Can Use Patron-Driven And Demand-Driven Acquisition Techniques To Build Library Collections With Minimal Management And Budget, Kerry A. Falloon
Charleston Library Conference
Patron-driven and demand-driven acquisitions (PDA/DDA) have been utilized for some time in academic libraries, but some university libraries are still new to the process. With changes in the last couple of years regarding shortterm monograph loans becoming cost ineffective, the popularity of streaming video PDA, and library materials budgets increasingly being cut, the conundrum of successfully implementing a DDA/PDA program and how to evaluate its effectiveness is a question many libraries need to answer. In the fall of 2015, the College of Staten Island Library-CUNY, implemented a small DDA monograph pilot program with Yankee Book Peddler (YBP) and EBSCOhost e-books …

Book Usage Is Rollin’ Down: Multifaceted Assessment Of Monograph Collection Performance To Optimize Purchase Decisions, Tricia L. Clayton, Skye C. Hardesty
Charleston Library Conference
Georgia State University’s print circulation has declined over 50% since 2010. Collection development librarians made several small-scale adjustments to address this trend, yet the drop off in use continued unabated. We had to totally rethink the book budget. To make changes strategically and responsibly, we needed answers to a variety of questions: Are there disciplines that do not need firm order allocations or even monographs? Does format matter? Does it matter how the titles are acquired with regard to approval versus firm order versus demand-driven acquisition (DDA)?
This paper discusses the multifaceted data-driven analysis we developed in order to provide …
Housing Diversity In Children’S Literature, Carla Earhart
Housing Diversity In Children’S Literature, Carla Earhart
Charleston Library Conference
Previous studies have examined diversity in children’s literature: Gender diversity, racial diversity, religious diversity, and diversity in family composition. This project examines an often overlooked diversity issue in children’s literature: Housing diversity. In the stories they read and the accompanying images, children need to see a variety of housing environments and need to see the settings and the people portrayed in a positive manner.
Renting an apartment is an increasingly popular housing option for many families. However, many children’s books glamorize living in a traditional house. Using a rubric designed by the course instructor, students in a university immersive learning …

Apples To Oranges: Comparing Streaming Video Platforms, Steven Milewski, Monique Threatt
Charleston Library Conference
Librarians rely on an ever-increasing variety of platforms to deliver streaming video content to our patrons. These two presentations will examine different aspects of video streaming platforms to gain guidance from the comparison of platforms. The first will examine the accessibility compliance of the various video streaming platforms for users with disabilities by examining accessibility features of the platforms. The second will be a comparison of subject usage of two of the larger video streaming platform providers (Alexander Street Press and Kanopy) done at Indiana University Bloomington, a large public university.

Valuing Consortial Resources: A Framework For Assessment, Genya O'Gara, Madeline Kelly, Julie Kane, Anne Osterman, Cheryl Duncan, Crystal Newell, Beth Blanton-Kent, Summer Durrant
Charleston Library Conference
Grounded assessment begins with establishing the goals of an institution and its users, but there is an added layer of complexity in determining value at the consortial level, where individual institutions will naturally perceive the value of a particular resource differently. The shared resources of a consortium are also often diverse in both format and acquisition method. How should the relative value between e-books and streaming media be compared? Between leased and demand-driven acquisitions? Between open access and collaboratively owned models?
How A New Library System Changed The Way We Think About Acquisitions And Collection Development, Thomas A. Karel, Bonnie Powers
How A New Library System Changed The Way We Think About Acquisitions And Collection Development, Thomas A. Karel, Bonnie Powers
Charleston Library Conference
Franklin & Marshall College (F&M) is a small undergraduate institution with a full-time equivalent (FTE) of approximately 2,400 students. In the summer of 2016, the library migrated to Online Computer Library Center’s (OCLC) WorldShare Management System (WMS). This change to a cloud-based library system gave us an opportunity to consider new ways of doing cataloging, circulation, and acquisitions. This presentation will primarily discuss the changes that were implemented to the allocation of funds for ordering materials and the impact of those changes, including the way we now approach collection development.

An Evangelical Response To Thomas Baima’S “The Prolongation Of The Incarnation”, Craig R. Higgins
An Evangelical Response To Thomas Baima’S “The Prolongation Of The Incarnation”, Craig R. Higgins
Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture
The author expresses agreement with Thomas Baima that scripture is clear in teaching a correlation between Jesus the Incarnate Word and the church as the body of Christ. He expands on the areas of agreement and proposes Acts 9:4–5 as strongly making this same point. Then he presents why Evangelicals might “express discomfort” with the phrase used by Pope Francis and introduced into the dialogue at Mundelein by Robert Barron: “the prolongation of the Incarnation.” To overcome this discomfort, certain qualifications need to be made. The primary one is to distinguish the Incarnation and the Ascension as unique and unrepeatable …
The Prolongation Of The Incarnation: Toward A Biblical Understanding Of The Church, Thomas A. Baima
The Prolongation Of The Incarnation: Toward A Biblical Understanding Of The Church, Thomas A. Baima
Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture
The author argues that the church is a prolongation of the Incarnation. He begins by explaining the issues involved in this position. Then he turns to Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, where we read: “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church” (Col 1:24). Then he turns to Caesarius of Arles, who speaks of the church as persons grafted into one body that enables them to be Christ to others. Christ acts through the members, using the …
The Real Presence Of Hope And Love: The Christocentric Legacy Of Pope Benedict Xvi, Hans Boersma
The Real Presence Of Hope And Love: The Christocentric Legacy Of Pope Benedict Xvi, Hans Boersma
Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture
The author notes that a media that focuses only on progressive or conservative issues can capture only the surface of Christianity. Cardinal Ratzinger delves below the social and moral issues to Christology, the place of Christ at the center of Christianity. By looking at Deus Caritas Est (his 2005 encyclical on love) and Spe Salvi(his 2007 encyclical on hope), the author notes that by focusing on Christ, we find what Ratzinger calls “an encounter, a love story, . . . an event.” It is this reality of Christianity that Catholics and Evangelicals should discuss: the visibility of God in …

Online Digital Exhibit With The Tippecanoe County Historical Association, Kathryn Math, Jinghong Zhu, Rajan Dalal
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
We fi rst came into contact with the Tippecanoe County Historical Association (TCHA) through the fall 2016 honors course “Digital Histories,” led by Dr. Jennifer Bay. Our course project was to create a digital exhibition for the TCHA with a service-learning grant provided by Purdue University. In this collaboration, we were able to put into practice the theories and processes we learned in the classroom and gain both a working knowledge of archival techniques and an understanding of the relationship between the institution and the community. The exhibit “Planting Our Roots: The Immigrant Experience in Tippecanoe County” is the result …

Haitian Sun And Peruvian Ruins: Service-Learning In International Development, Paige Rudin
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Development issues in growing nations can be seen and discussed in service-learning programs on Purdue’s campus. Two international experiences in Haiti and Peru reveal a need for development strategies that can be universally applied in service-learning settings. Traveling with graduate students from Lima, Peru, to study animal connection in Peruvian society and teaching Haitian university students the basics of water quality and testing allow the exchange of ideas between cultures and profound learning for both parties. Connections like these change mindsets and inspire curiosity, thus strengthening human capacity. Challenges and barriers like integrating quantitative and qualitative data from community partners …

Cultivating Leaders Of Indiana: Global Collaborations And Local Impacts, Jennifer Sdunzik, Annagul Yaryyeva
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
“Cultivating Leaders of Indiana” was developed to establish connections between the Purdue student body and the Frankfort, Indiana, community. By engaging high school students in workshops that focused on local, national, and global identities, the goal of the project was to encourage students to appreciate their individuality and to motivate them to translate their skills into a global perspective. Moreover, workshops centering on themes such as culture, citizenship, media, and education were designed to empower project participants to embrace their sense of social value and responsibility, not only in their immediate communities, but also globally.
