Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Veterans Returning From Combat: Impact On Social Reintegration, Rod Van Pelt
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Veterans Returning From Combat: Impact On Social Reintegration, Rod Van Pelt
Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition frequently observed in soldiers and veterans. The reintegration of veterans returning from combat is a challenge that state and federal administrations, as well as civilian structures and workplaces, face routinely. Despite PTSD being a public health issue with a socioeconomic impact, non-scholarly debate is the primary source of information on the non-medical burden of PTSD. The majority of scholarly evidence focuses on PTSD primarily as a medical condition, including when addressing the problem from a socioeconomic standpoint. In fact, most of the recent scholarly evidence points to specific areas of PTSD, such …

Writes Well With Others: Developing L2 Expertise In Writing Center Tutors, Vicki R. Kennell
Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Creative Materials
Written as a manual to help writing center directors develop multilingual training for their tutors, this document uses the case study of a locally-developed comprehensive L2 tutor training program to clarify administrative and practical concerns of program development and to offer material that can be used in such a training program. The introduction explores in detail the need for L2 training, clarifies variations between writers and between cohorts of tutors, examines the disconnects that can exist between theory and practice, and explains some of the theoretical conflicts that exist between writing center pedagogy and second language pedagogy. Subsequent sections discuss …
Revealing The Resistant Capital Of Cambodian Youth: Using Photovoice As A Tool For Advocacy And Policy Change, Erin L. Papa
Revealing The Resistant Capital Of Cambodian Youth: Using Photovoice As A Tool For Advocacy And Policy Change, Erin L. Papa
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This paper explores the use of Photovoice as a tool for uncovering or developing resistant capital (Yosso, 2005) with youth for language education policy change. Using data from a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) study on the relationships and tensions among the home, community, and school linguistic and social practices of emergent bilingual Cambodian youth in an urban district in the northeastern U.S., I argue that the development of resistant capital depends on various contextual and demographic factors. The Cambodian youth, who have been educated in a recursive bilingual environment (García, 2009) and are involved in a youth-led community organization …

Are Economic Pressures On University Press Acquisitions Quietly Changing The Shape Of The Scholarly Record?, Emily J. Farrell, Kizer S. Walker, Nicole A. Kendzejeski, Mahinder S. Kingra, Elizabeth Windsor
Charleston Library Conference
The monograph remains central to humanities and qualitative social science (HSS) research as the form most suitable for the long-form argument and, crucially, as foundational to the tenure process in these fields. University and other scholarly presses have played a vital role in supporting the publication of scholarly monographs where such narrow research is not seen as being as commercially viable as, for example, journals. While there appears to be an erosion of traditional revenue streams, new funding models are not yet recuperating costs for scholarly monographs. Library budgets continue to tighten, with new collection strategies taking hold, putting strain …
Has American Exceptionalism Made The United States An Outlier On The Global Academic Stage?, Michèle V. Cloonan
Has American Exceptionalism Made The United States An Outlier On The Global Academic Stage?, Michèle V. Cloonan
Charleston Library Conference
This paper considers whether American exceptionalism has reduced the standing of the United States in the world—and whether it has impacted our ability to remain innovative. The paper is based on my presentation on a panel on this theme at the Charleston Conference 2018. The panel considered key international social issues in which Americans have become outliers, such as climate change, health care, and gun control. It also focused on research in the cultural heritage sector. Here I expand on my remarks about the origins of exceptionalism and its possible impact on libraries, archives, and museums. This issue is not …

Next Year In Jerusalem: Exile And Return In Jewish History, Leonard Greenspoon
Studies in Jewish Civilization
Next Year in Jerusalem recognizes that Jews have often experienced or imaged periods of exile and return in their long tradition. The fourteen papers in this collection examine this phenomenon from different approaches, genres, and media. They cover the period from biblical times through today. Among the exiles highlighted are the Babylonian Exile (sixth century BCE), the exile after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple (70 CE), and the years after the Crusaders (tenth century CE). Events of return include the aftermath of the Babylonian Exile (fifth century BCE), the centuries after the Temple’s destruction (first and second CE), and …

American Stem Education In Its Global, National, And Linguistic Contexts, Sezai Kocabas, Burhan Ozfidan, Lynn M. Burlbaw
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
STEM education was a systematic teaching and/or learning process in the STEM fields and a positive correlation existed between STEM education, and the economic prosperity and power of a nation in the globalized world. In recent years, rising concerns have emerged about American STEM education. Many stakeholders wondered that whether the nation has enough well-qualified STEM students, teachers and workforce to maintain its current competitive edge. This study sought to answer those questions, presenting a unique view about the concerns. This study, besides, summarized selected major legislation which affected STEM Education in the United States. The results of the study …
Linguistic Ideologies In The Performance Of Bulgarian Identity, Chelsey Norman
Linguistic Ideologies In The Performance Of Bulgarian Identity, Chelsey Norman
Purdue Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Studies Conference
Since the end of Communism in 1989 and joining the European Union in 2007, Bulgarians have experienced much greater mobility and access to the global community. Despite this more global perspective, Bulgarians maintain a strong sense of national identity. Given this interplay between global and national identities, Bulgaria is an apt location to conduct this ideological research. Using a combination of ethnographic observations (June-July 2018) and semi-structured interviews with bilingual Bulgarians in Sofia, this study examines how large-scale phenomena like nationalism and globalization are found in the micro-scale interactional construction of identity. Results show that a great deal of ideological …
The Acquisition Of Diminutives In Moroccan Heritage Speakers In France, Amal El Haimeur
The Acquisition Of Diminutives In Moroccan Heritage Speakers In France, Amal El Haimeur
Purdue Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Studies Conference
This study addresses the acquisition of diminutive forms by Moroccan heritage speakers in France. Diminutive formation depends on stem modification. 15 Moroccan-French participants took part in this study. In a production experiment, participants were asked to form diminutives for 6 types of stems, since the stem type determines the diminutive pattern. The findings of this study show that the mean percentage of source-like use of the diminutive forms is 38%. The results revealed that just two patterns that were acquired by a significant number of participants: CCiCa and CCiCjCjəC. Diminutive forms that do not require complex processes are acquired by …
Exploring The Emotional Language In The Twilight Novel As A Literary Discourse: An Appraisal Theory Analysis, Susan Ataei
Exploring The Emotional Language In The Twilight Novel As A Literary Discourse: An Appraisal Theory Analysis, Susan Ataei
Purdue Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Studies Conference
Emotions have always been a mysterious realm of human beings gaining an understanding of which requires the collaboration of scholars from multiple disciplines. This study employed the Appraisal Theory (Martin & White, 2005) of evaluations and emotions to explore the manifestation of emotions in a popular modern prose fiction, the first book of the twilight series by Stephenie Meyer (2009) - Twilight. The objective of the study was to gain a deep understanding of how a bestselling literary prose fiction, Twilight, employs human emotions, and thus “affect”, to impose its “effect” on the reader. I applied the affect sub-system of …
Optimizing L2 Vocabulary Acquisition: Applied Linguistic Research, George H. Borawski
Optimizing L2 Vocabulary Acquisition: Applied Linguistic Research, George H. Borawski
Purdue Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Studies Conference
Any acquisition in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) starts as word recognition; as such vocabulary acquisition is integral to language learning as a whole and is a precursor to fluent communication (Ellis, 1996; Moore, 1996). To maximize SLA, vocabulary acquisition must be optimized. However, vocabulary acquisition is understudied and underutilized, especially compared to other aspects of SLA (Paribakht & Wesche, 1997). Cook states, “…the vast bulk of examinations, syllabuses, and course books around the globe show little overt influence from SLA research” (1998, p.10). Courses, teachers, and students would benefit from directly addressing SLA research, rather than utilize inefficient methods (Cook, …
Ellipsis In Iraqi Arabic: An Analysis Of Gapping, Sluicing, And Stripping, Saja Albuarabi
Ellipsis In Iraqi Arabic: An Analysis Of Gapping, Sluicing, And Stripping, Saja Albuarabi
Purdue Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Studies Conference
The purpose of this paper is to explore the syntax of ellipsis in Iraqi Arabic. The paper sheds light on three types of ellipsis in Arabic and English, namely: sluicing, gapping, and stripping and puts each of them in a comparison between Iraqi Arabic and English languages in addition to Arabic dialects. To the best of my knowledge, these elliptical structures have not been studied in Iraqi Arabic before. Therefore, this study offers the first description of these phenomena from a generative standpoint. The paper argues that the three types of ellipsis mentioned above can be the result of Phonological …

This research study aims to examine language change occurring in written discourse due to increase in the usage of emojis and the way emojis, in comparison to words, are performing communicative functions on social media platforms such as Facebook. The study focused on Pakistani Facebook users. For the study, Facebook is one of the most authentic social media platforms because 71.75 % (Internet Word Stat) of Pakistani internet users use Facebook which is the highest statistics among all social media applications. In order to investigate the recent language change and communicative functions performed by emojis, we utilized Speech act theory …

The Effect Of Teacher Professional Development On Implementing Engineering In Elementary Schools, Teresa Porter, Meg E. West, Rachel L. Kajfez, Kathy L. Malone, Karen E. Irving
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Increased attention on the implementation of engineering education into elementary school classrooms aims to start preparing students early for potential engineering careers. In order to efficiently and effectively add engineering concepts to the curriculum, appropriate development and facilitation of engineering design challenges are required. Therefore, professional development programs are necessary to educate teachers about engineering and how to adequately teach it. This paper explores the effects of an engineering professional development program for practicing teachers. The program included training elementary teachers about how to implement units from Engineering is Elementary (EiE) by the Science Museum of Boston into their classes. …
Mediating Suffering: Buddhist Detachment And Tantric Responsibility In Michael Ondaatje’S Anil’S Ghost, Justin M. Hewitson
Mediating Suffering: Buddhist Detachment And Tantric Responsibility In Michael Ondaatje’S Anil’S Ghost, Justin M. Hewitson
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In “Mediating Suffering: Buddhist Detachment and Tantric Responsibility in Michael Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost,” Justin Hewitson argues that the global mediation of suffering following human rights abuses creates the offender-victim binary. The way in which moral judgments drive urgent peacemaking is seldom connected to long-term victimhood narratives. This psychology can exacerbate cyclical patterns of anger, exploitation, and violence by deferring responsibility. Ondaatje’s controversial novel, Anil’s Ghost, which reflects these charged accusations, refuses to settle blame on any side of the Sri Lankan conflict; instead, it offers the troubling recognition that offenders, victims, and mediators are all causal agents. Hewitson …

Une Rencontre Manquée : Confrontation, Défiance Et Stéréotypes Entre Suds Dans Milano, Fin Qui Tutto Bene De Gabriella Kuruvilla, Nicola Brarda
Artl@s Bulletin
Tony, a Milanese youngster of Neapolitan descent, encounters an Egyptian migrant, Samir, in a bar. Tony is drunk and Samir steals his mobile phone. This episode is narrated briefly in two chapters of Gabriella Kuruvilla’s novel Milano, fin qui tutto bene. We will try to analyze, within this misunderstanding, the ways in which the novel questions the apparent homogeneity of the notion of South, by staging the collision between two distinct Souths within the city : the South embodied by former generations of migrants originating from the Mezzogiorno, as opposed to new migrants coming from the global South.
Infidelity As Reality: Re-Staging The Global South With Abbas Kiarostami’S Close-Up, Sinan Richards
Infidelity As Reality: Re-Staging The Global South With Abbas Kiarostami’S Close-Up, Sinan Richards
Artl@s Bulletin
In this article, we contend that, in the fields of art and visual culture, the Global South is both an elaborate lie and a radical opportunity for transformation. We investigate Kiarostami’s Close-up alongside Lacan’s psychoanalysis to show how Close-up’s filmic narrative evokes the same ‘polyvalence’ and ‘slipperiness’ as the notion of the Global South. We argue that Kiarostami’s Close-up retroactively changed Sabzian’s fate, and in so doing, Kiarostami’s re-staging actively overwrites History itself. We read the same narrative move in the concept of the Global South to suggest that the Global South adopts the Kiarostamian strategy of infidelity as reality …

Ritualisation Du Langage Et Métaphores Naturelles : Paradigmes Ou Écueils Pour Construire Un Discours Propre Au Sud ?, Cécile Chapon
Artl@s Bulletin
Recursive Reflective Reports: Embedded Assessment In Pbl Courses For Second Language Teacher Education, Cynthia A. Caswell
Recursive Reflective Reports: Embedded Assessment In Pbl Courses For Second Language Teacher Education, Cynthia A. Caswell
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
This conceptual article begins with a general definition of reflection and the soft skills of PBL: collaboration, agency, and metacognition. Then it presents theoretical frameworks for reflection from second language teacher education (SLTE) (Farrell, 2015; Pennington & Richards, 2016) and illustrates six types of reflection with examples from the field of SLTE. The article features a reflective self- and peer-assessment instrument, utilized in a graduate SLTE program. The standard yet flexible template of the reflective teaching report (RTR) allows these teacher educators to interact with their students’ development in the soft skills and the content of the SLTE knowledge base. …

Mandarin Localizers: Their Grammatical Category And Syntactic Distribution, Xuan Hu
Mandarin Localizers: Their Grammatical Category And Syntactic Distribution, Xuan Hu
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
If you say “the ball is on/to the right of the chair,” how many spatial configurations between the chair and the ball can you think of? Is there contact between the ball and the chair? If not, how far is the ball away from the chair? If you use another perspective, is the ball still on the right?
Spatial configurations in Mandarin are expressed via elements called localizers, and ambiguities are a natural part of these expressions. This essay proposes that those ambiguities result from different underlying syntactic structures. I argue that the complex morphemic structure of localizers can yield …

The Basic Trait Of Antagonism: An Unfortunately Underappreciated Construct, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller
Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications
Antagonism, the low pole of Agreeableness, references traits related to immorality, combativeness, grandiosity, callousness, and distrustfulness. It is a robust correlate of externalizing behaviors such as antisocial behavior, aggression, and substance use; in fact, in many cases, it is the strongest trait correlate. It represents the core of many important and impactful psychopathological constructs (e.g., psychopathy, antisocial and narcissistic personality disorders). It is also central to models of general and disordered personality, psychopathology, and interpersonal behavior. As Neuroticism is core to understanding the intense distress and suffering that comes with internalizing disorders, Antagonism is core to understanding the impairment and …

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Dietary aflatoxin exposure is a widespread problem in the developing world and causes severe negative health consequences to humans and livestock animals. A new biological control product, called Aflasafe, has been introduced in Nigeria to mitigate aflatoxin contamination of maize in the field and in storage. No known prior work has estimated how much African agribusinesses using maize for animal feed will pay for aflatoxin-safe maize. This study measured the levels of Aflasafe awareness, surveyed current aflatoxin management practices, and estimated, using choice experiments, willingness to pay (WTP) for aflatoxin-safe maize by Nigerian poultry producers and feed millers. Data was …

Overlapping Scriptworlds: Chinese Literature As A Global Assemblage, Wai-Chew Sim
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article “Overlappinig Scriptworlds: Chinese Literature as a Global Assemblage,” Wai-Chew Sim offers a globalist vision or understanding of Chinese literary studies/Sinophone studies. Deploying the notion of scriptworld (Damrosch), he examines how the Chinese, English, and Malay-language scriptworlds interact in the Southeast Asian context. He traces the rhizomatic connections between Joo Ming Chia’s Exile or Pursuit, a Singapore Sinophone text that explores multiple belongings, and two novels: M. L. Mohamed’s Confrontation (originally published as Batas Langit), and T.H. Kwee’s The Rose of Cikembang (originally published as Bunga Roos dari Cikembang). Tracing the sinophonicity of the latter …

Urban Landscape In Mcewan's Narrative Representation Of Berlin, Barbara J. Puschmann-Nalenz
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Urban Landscape in McEwan's Narrative Representation of Berlin," Barbara J. Puschmann-Nalenz discusses the image of Berlin created in Ian McEwanﹸs novel The Innocent (1990) and the chapter titled "Berlin" in Black Dogs (1992). It starts from the hypothetical statement that while British literary fiction set in Berlin is rare after 1970 the genres of spy and detective novel, where crime and violence take center stage, shape the image of the city in highbrow narratives as well. The perspectivization of the cityscape, including its monuments, through the protagonists fundamentally influences its image. In The Innocent the limited view …

Retro-Future In Post-Soviet Dystopia, Sergey Toymentsev
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article “Retro-Future in Post-Soviet Dystopia” Sergey Toymentsev explores the vision of retrospective future in such Russian novels as Tatiana Tolstaya’s The Slynx, Vladimir Sorokin’s Day of the Oprichnik, Olga Slavnikova’s 2017, and Dmitry Bykov’s Zhd. Unlike Zamyatin’s and Platonov’s anti-Soviet satires, post-Soviet dystopias do not respond to any utopian narrative, but project the historical and ideological reality of Russia’s violent (predominantly Soviet) past into the future. Such a traumatic reenactment of the Soviet past in the dystopian future testifies to the rise of authoritarianism in contemporary Russia as well as its incomplete collective memory …

On Imaginary Content Analogies In Musico-Literary Imitation, Rodrigo Guijarro Lasheras
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "On Imaginary Content Analogies in Musico-Literary Imitation,” Rodrigo Guijarro Lasheras analyzes "imaginary content analogy," a term often used in musico-literary studies to describe a type of imitation of music in literature. His paper aims to examine and characterize this important concept, establishing several of its features that musico-literary criticism has not normally paid attention to, such as its static or dynamic character, its implicit or explicit musical correlate, and its relation to vocal music. He argues that all imaginary content analogies must have a correlate, and that, despite the fact that we normally think of them as …

Abstract: The reincarnation myth is a global concept, founded basically in religion and tradition. It was especially vibrant in the ancient times in places like Egypt, Greece, and in continents like Asia and Africa, which possess varying understandings of the myth. In Igbo tradition, for example, it is believed that reincarnation occurs within a family. And that some of the marks of reincarnation are usually the possession of the birthmark or certain other physical features and the exhibition of character and behavioral traits of a deceased person by a living member of his/her immediate or extended family. Thus, reincarnation entails …

Remnants Of Dissent, Thomas Docherty
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, “Remnants of Dissent,” Thomas Docherty explores the relation of dissent to guilty complicity in post-war Europe. The article opens with a consideration of the position of Karl Jaspers in 1945 and examines how Jaspers worked through the various modes of guilt that flowed from diverse modes of living under Nazism. Of particular interest is the status of silence in the face of tyrannical Nazi oppression and murders. The essay explores how the workings of language, and its manipulations by the Nazis, helps to normalize such tyranny and to make resistance to it both dangerous and difficult. The …
