Science Classroom Discourse For Fourth Grade English Language Learners' Scientific Literacy Development, Shu-Wen Lan
Science Classroom Discourse For Fourth Grade English Language Learners' Scientific Literacy Development, Shu-Wen Lan
Open Access Dissertations
Recent research has shown that the construction of science knowledge involves students' development of science understanding and science language, particularly as it relates to intertextual connections to science terminology and concepts that teachers and students make in science classroom discourse. However, up to now, there is little research exploring this development in upper elementary students, including English Language Learners (ELLs). Through a qualitative case study of a fourth grade science classroom with ELLs, this research project investigated science classroom discourse, using the frameworks of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) discourse analysis and intertextual analysis, to understand the nature of science classroom …

The Effect On Cumulative Language Acquisition Increase For English Language Learner Students In Kindergarten Through Third Grade Who Attended Multiple Years Of Summer Remediation Programs, Gregory Anthony Baker
Open Access Dissertations
Baker, Gregory A. Ph.D., Purdue University, December 2013. The Effect On Cumulative Language Acquisition Increase For English Language Learner Students In Kindergarten Through Third Grade Who Attended Multiple Years Of Summer Remediation Programs. Major Professor: Marilyn A. Hirth
Already academically at risk, students in the rapidly growing English Language Learner (ELL) student population in the United States face additional challenges due to regression of English language acquisition over the average ten-week agrarian summer break when they return to homes in which Spanish was the primary language spoken. While the influence of summer learning loss has been investigated in different contexts …
Automatic Identification Of Metaphoric Utterances, Jonathan Edwin Dunn
Automatic Identification Of Metaphoric Utterances, Jonathan Edwin Dunn
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes the problem of metaphor identification in linguistic and computational semantics, considering both manual and automatic approaches. It describes a manual approach to metaphor identification, the Metaphoricity Measurement Procedure (MMP), and compares this approach with other manual approaches. The dissertation then describes an implemented and simplified version of the procedure, Measuring and Identifiying Metaphor-in-Language (MIMIL), and compares the premises of this system with other automatic metaphor identification systems. MIMIL and three existing metaphor identification systems are then evaluated on a common data set. Finally, the dissertation looks at difficulties which face attempts to automatically identify metaphors caused by …
Improving Understanding Of Pre-Service Teacher Experience With Technology Integration., Christopher Mong
Improving Understanding Of Pre-Service Teacher Experience With Technology Integration., Christopher Mong
Teaching and Learning Technologies Publications
Pre-service teachers develop technology competency during their tenure in the college classroom. These stages coincide with Bloom's Revised Taxonomy and offer the opportunity to learn and model technology integration. 656 pre-service education students from five universities across the United States completed a qualitative survey aimed at identifying how they perceived technology integration throughout their teacher education program. Three themes, corresponding to Bloom's Revised Taxonomy, were identified; 1) pre-service teachers first identify and understand technology as a tool, 2) pre-service teachers apply technology and analyze the process of integration, and 3) overall, pre-service teachers do not evaluate and create technology integration …

“Seeing, Seeing, Seeing”: Deafness, Knowledge, And Subjectivity In Elizabeth Bowen, Maren Linett
“Seeing, Seeing, Seeing”: Deafness, Knowledge, And Subjectivity In Elizabeth Bowen, Maren Linett
Department of English Faculty Publications
In What is Posthumanism, Cary Wolfe enlists Temple Grandin’s account of her autism to critique reductive ideas of subjectivity. He quotes Oliver Sacks’s comment that Grandin’s first book was “unthinkable because it had been medical dogma for forty years or more that there was no ‘inside,’ no inner life, in the autistic, or that if there was it would be forever denied access or expression” (129). As Wolfe sees it, that dogma is founded in no small part on the too-rapid assimilation of the questions of subjectivity, consciousness, and cognition to the question of language ability—a dogma that is perhaps …
Video Games And Citizenship, Jeroen Bourgonjon, Ronald Soetaert
Video Games And Citizenship, Jeroen Bourgonjon, Ronald Soetaert
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Video Games and Citizenship" Jeroen Bourgonjon and Ronald Soetaert argue that digitization problematizes and broadens our perspective on culture and popular media and that this has important ramifications for our understanding of citizenship. Bourgonjon and Soetaert respond to the call of Gert Biesta for the contextualized study of young people's practices by exploring a particular aspect of digitization that affects young people, namely video games. They explore the new social spaces which emerge in video game culture and how these spaces relate to community building and citizenship. Bourgonjon and Soetaert also examine whether these social spaces can …
Rhetorical Analysis Of Literary Culture In Social Reading Platforms, Joachim Vlieghe, Kris Rutten
Rhetorical Analysis Of Literary Culture In Social Reading Platforms, Joachim Vlieghe, Kris Rutten
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Rhetorical Analysis of Literary Culture in Social Reading Platforms" Joachim Vlieghe and Kris Rutten present a case study of the discourse surrounding literary phenomena that are emerging within social media. The case study is part of a methodological exploration within literacy studies whereby the social media's transformative effects on literary literacies are studied by focusing on language as symbolic and situated action. Vlieghe and Rutten have identified unique social reading platforms based on a prolonged study of the social media environment. The analysis of the developers' discourse on social reading platforms shows how developers are formulating new …

Reading, Literacy, And Education, Mikko Lehtonen
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Reading, Literacy, and Education" Mikko Lehtonen outlines a contextual approach to literacy. He asks how the changing relations of culture and economy, transformation of nation states and national cultures and changing notions concerning affect and cognition, transform notions of literacy and reading. Relying on the results of a recent Finnish research project on new reading communities and new ways of reading, Lehtonen highlights substantial continuities in the reading habits of the so called Google generation when compared to other generations of readers. Print media is not, however, connected self-evidently to cognitive reading among the said generation. Lehtonen …
Rhetoric, Citizenship, And Cultural Literacy, Kris Rutten, Ronald Soetaert
Rhetoric, Citizenship, And Cultural Literacy, Kris Rutten, Ronald Soetaert
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Rhetoric, Citizenship, and Cultural Literacy" Kris Rutten and Ronald Soetaert start from concerns in contemporary educational debates about a growing lack of civic literacy. These complaints are raised both in the public sphere, in institutions of pedagogy, and in scholarship about the form, content, and function of civic literacy and civic education. Although there is an ongoing debate about the alleged decrease of political interest and the current state of civic literacy, it is clear that civic education has become an important focus of different governmental initiatives. Rutten and Soetaert aim to move away from a straightforward …
Practical And Theoretical Implications Of Digitizing The Middle Ages, Roberta Capelli
Practical And Theoretical Implications Of Digitizing The Middle Ages, Roberta Capelli
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Practical and Theoretical Implications of Digitalizing the Middle Ages" Roberta Capelli discusses scholarship about and the teaching of medieval culture in digital humanities. While every medieval manuscript is an individual entity, displaying a series of unique and unrepeatable material, structural and aesthetic characteristics, digital devices are able to generate only two-dimensional photographic reproductions. However, the digital medium brings about some major improvements in the study — and teaching — of medieval manuscripts because the hypertextual nature of its applications allows us to analyse simultaneously synchronic and the diachronic dynamics. From a theoretical point of view, the difference …
Sites Of Disquiet: The Non-Space In Spanish American Short Narratives And Their Cinematic Transformations, Ilka Kressner
Sites Of Disquiet: The Non-Space In Spanish American Short Narratives And Their Cinematic Transformations, Ilka Kressner
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Some of the most important writers of the twentieth century, including Borges, Cortázar, Rulfo, and García Márquez, have explored ambiguous sites of a disquieting nature. Their characters face merging perspectives, deferral, darkness, or emptiness. Such a space is neither a site of projection (as utopia or dystopia) nor a neutral setting (as the topos). For the characters, it is real and active, at once elusive and transforming. Despite the challenges of visualizing such slippery spaces, filmic experimentations in Spanish American cinema since the 1960s have sought to adapt these texts to the screen. Ilka Kressner’s Sites of Disquiet examines these …

Auditory Enhancement And Second Language Experience In Spanish And English Weighting Of Secondary Voicing Cues, Fernando Llanos, Olga Dmitrieva, Amanda Shultz, Alexander L. Francis
School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
The role of secondary cues in voicing categorization was investigated in three listener groups: Monolingual English (n=20) and Spanish speakers (n=20), and Spanish speakers with significant English experience (n=16). Results showed that, in all three groups, participants used onset f0 in making voicing decisions only in the positive voice onset time (VOT) range (short lag and long lag tokens), while there was no effect of onset f0 on voicing categorization within the negative VOT range (voicing lead tokens) for any of the participant groups. These results support an auditory enhancement view of perceptual cue weighting: Onset f0 serves as a …

Shimoda's Program For Japanese And Chinese Women's Education, Mamiko Suzuki
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Shimoda Program for Japanese and Chinese Women's Education" Mamiko Suzuki discusses Western developments as a facet of educational curricula in Japan in the early twentieth century. When in the early 1900s a number of elite Chinese women traveled to Tokyo — for most, their first time abroad — to receive a modern education, it was at Jissen Women's Academy, which was the first to enroll female Chinese students in Tokyo and thus a crucial site for the development of a modern pan-Asian female identity. A central figure in the popularization of women's education and household and hygiene …
Re-Defining South Korean Scholarship And Education Within The Context Of Globalization, Simon C. Estok
Re-Defining South Korean Scholarship And Education Within The Context Of Globalization, Simon C. Estok
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Re-defining South Korean Scholarship and Education within the Context of Globalization" Simon C. Estok discusses effects of globalization on the educational and scholarly goals and realities of Korea. Estok argues that although the transformational impacts of globalization in terms of sports, entertainment, politics, and business in Korea are visible, efforts to produce more globally visible Korean scholarship have been ineffective and counter-productive. Estok shows that the imagined dangers to Korean nationhood are rooted in fears of invasion which have strong historical and contemporary justification. Colonized for a third of the twentieth century, Korea in the twenty-first century …

Perspectives on Identity, Migration, and Displacement -- edited by Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek, I-Chun Wang, and Hsiao-Yu Sun (Kaohsiung: National Sun Yat-sen University Press, 2010. ISBN 9789860235418 209 pages, bibliography, index) is a collection of articles about sociological and literary aspects of identity formation as a consequence of (im)migration. (Im)migration results in the problematics of assimilation and hybridity and in postcolonial scholarship, in particular, attention is paid to the concept of migration termed "Creolization" on the ground that cultural contact, cultural transmission, and cultural transformation result in the creation of new cultures. On Evaluating Human Problem Solving Of Computationally Hard Problems, Sarah Carruthers, Ulrike Stege
On Evaluating Human Problem Solving Of Computationally Hard Problems, Sarah Carruthers, Ulrike Stege
The Journal of Problem Solving
This article is concerned with how computer science, and more exactly computational complexity theory, can inform cognitive science. In particular, we suggest factors to be taken into account when investigating how people deal with computational hardness. This discussion will address the two upper levels of Marr’s Level Theory: the computational level and the algorithmic level. Our reasons for believing that humans indeed deal with hard cognitive functions are threefold: (1) Several computationally hard functions are suggested in the literature, e.g., in the areas of visual search, visual perception and analogical reasoning, linguistic processing, and decision making. (2) People appear to …
Knowing Subjects: Cognitive Cultural Studies And Early Modern Spanish, Barbara Simerka
Knowing Subjects: Cognitive Cultural Studies And Early Modern Spanish, Barbara Simerka
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
In Knowing Subjects, Barbara Simerka uses an emergent field of literary study-cognitive cultural studies-to delineate new ways of looking at early modern Spanish literature and to analyze cognition and social identity in Spain at the time. Simerka analyzes works by Cervantes and Gracían, as well as picaresque novels and comedias. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, she brings together several strands of cognitive theory and details the synergies among neurological, anthropological, and psychological discoveries that provide new insights into human cognition. Her analysis draws on Theory of Mind, the cognitive activity that enables humans to predict what others will do, feel, …

The Development Of Differential Object Marking In Spanish-English Bilingual Children, Mariluz Ortiz Vergara
The Development Of Differential Object Marking In Spanish-English Bilingual Children, Mariluz Ortiz Vergara
Open Access Theses
In monolingual development, the acquisition of differential object marking (DOM) is completed by three years of age (Rodríguez- Mondoñedo, 2008). However, among bilingual speakers, the development and use of the marker at a young age is less predictable. Spanish marks animate and specific direct objects with the preposition-a; English in contrast does not. Based on previous studies documenting transfer in areas where Spanish and English differ, it was predicted that bilingual children would experience difficulties with the use of the preposition both in matrix and left dislocated sentences (CLLD) (Montrul, 2004, Montrul & Bowles, 2009). This study tested 14 simultaneous …
Effects Of Music Tempos On Flight Performance, Alexandra R. Kieta, John P. Young, Derek Stewart
Effects Of Music Tempos On Flight Performance, Alexandra R. Kieta, John P. Young, Derek Stewart
Aviation Technology Graduate Student Publications
To date, research on how listening to music affects performance in high-cognitive demand environments has ranged from those working in information technology to everyday drivers. Some research asserts listening to music does have an effect on human task performance (whether positive or negative) and other research asserts there are no statistically significant effects. This research study focused on how varying music tempos affect pilot performance during certain flight maneuvers. With significant findings, measures could be taken to improve pilot, crew and passenger safety; however, no statistically significant results were found that listening to different music tempos had any effect on …
