Parallel, Probabilistic, Self-Organizing, Hierarchical Neural Networks , Faramarz Valafar, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A new neural network architecture called the Parallel Probabilistic Self-organizing Hierarchical Neural Network (PPSHNN) is introduced. The PPSHNN is designed to solve complex classification problems, by dividing the input vector space into regions, and by performing classification on those regions. It consists of several modules which operate in a hierarchically during learning and in parallel during testing. Each module has the task of classification for a region of the input information space as well as the task of participating in the formation of these regions through post- and pre-rejection schemes. The decomposition into regions is performed in a manner that …

Modular Mappings Of Rectangular Algorithms, Hyuk J. Lee, José A.B. Fortes Jun 1994

Modular Mappings Of Rectangular Algorithms, Hyuk J. Lee, José A.B. Fortes

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Affine space-time mappings have been extensively studied for systolic array design and parallelizing compilation. However, there are practical important cases that require other types of transformations. This paper considers so-called modular mappings described by linear transformations modulo a constant vector. Sufficient conditions for these mappings to be one-to-one are investigated for rectangular domains of arbitrary dimensions. It is shown that a sufficient condition for a modular mapping to be one-to-one is that its (n x n) coefficient -matrix T has entries tii = k1 and tij = 0 for i > j where > is a total order on {1, 2,. ., …

Selected Topics On Demand Side Management, S. Alyasin, L. Chung, D Gotham, D. Hu, B. Kwon, J. Lee, A. Mok, A. Risal, R. Sasaki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Each year in the graduate course on "Economic Dispatch and Control of Integrated Power Systems," the students prepare a term project which is assembled into a report. This year, the assigned topic relates to demand side management. This topic appears to be especially timely and, because it relates to the revenue derived by the electric utility. The term demand side management (DSM) refers to modification of power system demand by some means in order to obtain better load factor characteristics. The study of DSM has many unresolved issues - many stem from the fact that the electric utility industry is …

A Performance Analysis Of A Digital Pll Based Mpsk Demodulator, Michael P. Fitz, R. Jean-Marc Cramer May 1994

A Performance Analysis Of A Digital Pll Based Mpsk Demodulator, Michael P. Fitz, R. Jean-Marc Cramer

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper presents a generalized nonlinear (Markov) analysis technique that is used to evaluate the statistical performance of uniforn~ly sampled digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) demodulators. Although the rigorous analysis of the statistical performance of the analog PLL for digitally modulated signals (i.e., Costas loops) remains an open problem, the discrete time analysis for MPSK modulation is tractable. This paper characterizes the first-order, decisiondirected DPLL based demodulator as a Markov chain. Traditional analytical techniques are used to evaluate the steady-state statistical performance. Numerical results for the steady-state density function are derived for BPSK, QPSK, and 8PSK. The resulting steady-state bit error …

Managing Multiple Knowledge Sources In Constraint-Based Parsing Of Spoken Language, Mary P. Harper, Randall A. Helzerman Apr 1994

Managing Multiple Knowledge Sources In Constraint-Based Parsing Of Spoken Language, Mary P. Harper, Randall A. Helzerman

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper, we describe a system which is capable of utilizing a variety of knowledge sources to select the most appropriate parse for a spoken sentence. These knowledge sources include syntax, semantics, and contextual information. We discuss one way to utilize contextual information when determining a parse for a sentence. Our definition of a context is defined by which computer application we wish to interact with, where our system is capable of interfacing with two or more applications, each with a fixed vocabulary, syntax, and semanltics. The user is able to interact through a single interface which uses contextual …

Estimation Of Circuit Activity Considering Signal Correlations And Simultaneous Switchirlg, Tan Li Chou, Kaushik Roy, Sharat Prasad Apr 1994

Estimation Of Circuit Activity Considering Signal Correlations And Simultaneous Switchirlg, Tan Li Chou, Kaushik Roy, Sharat Prasad

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper presents accurate estimation of signal activity at the internal nodes of combinational logic circuits. The methodology is based on stochastic model of logic signah and takes correlations and simultaneous switching of signals at logic gate inputs into consideration. In combinationa1l ogic synthesis, in order to minimize spurious transitions due to finite propagation delays, it is crucia1 to balance a11 signa1 paths and to reduce the logic depth [4]. As a.result of balancing delays through different paths the inputs to logic gates may switch at approximately the same time. We have developed and implementated two algorithms to calculate signal …

Basic Resonant Topologies For Switching Power Supplies, Zacharias K. Vachaparambil Apr 1994

Basic Resonant Topologies For Switching Power Supplies, Zacharias K. Vachaparambil

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The objective of this thesis is to study the basic resonant converter topologies for switching power supplies and to compare their performance under different operating conditions. The series and parallel resonant converters are analyzed in detail. The analysis uses the state plane method, which gives a good insight of the operation of the converter. It is found that these converters have more desirable characteristics when operated at a frequency above the resonant frequency rather than below it. Analytical results are verified by sinlulation and experiment.

Dynamic Barrier Architecture For Multi-Mode Fine-Grain Parallelism Using Conventional Processors Part 11: Mode Emulation, W. E. Cohen, H. G. Dietz, J. B. Sponaugle

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Parallel computers constructed using conventional processors offer the potential to acheve large improvements in execution speed at reasonable cost, however, these machlnes tend to efficiently implement only coarse-grain MIMD parallelism. To achieve the best possible speedup through parallel execution, a computer must be capable of effectively using all the different types of parallelism that exist in each program. A combination of SIMD, VLW. and MIMD parallelism, at a variety of granularity levels, exists in most applications; thus, hardware that can support multiple types of parallelism can achieve better performance with a wider range of codes. In the companion paper [CoD94], …

Papers: Purdue's Adapter For Parallel Execution And Rapid Synchronization, H. G. Dietz, T. Muhammad, J. B. Sponaugle, T. Mattox

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

There are a lot of 386/486/Pentium-based personal computers (PCs) out there. They are affordable, reliable, and offer good performance. Thus, it is only natural to think of networking multiple PCs to create a high-performance parallel machine - the problem is that conventional networking systems cannot provide low latency synchronization and communication. Low latency allows fine grain parallelism; the longer the latency, the fewer the programs that can achieve good speedup through use of parallelism. Typical parallel machines constructed using PC networks (e.g., PVM software using Ethernet hardware) generally have latencies between 0.001s and 0.1s. Even the "best" commercially-available parallel computers …

Muse Csp: An Extension To The Constraint Satisfaction Problem, Randall A. Helzerman, Mary P. Harper

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper describes an extension to the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) approach called MUSE CSP (Multiply SEgmented Constraint Satisfaction Problem). This extension is especially useful for those problems which segment into multiple sets of partially shared variables. Such problems arise naturally in signal processing applications including computer vision, speech processing, and handwriting recognition. For these applications, it is often difficult to segment the data in only one way given the low-level information utilized by the segmentation algorithms. MUSE CSP can be used to efficiently represent and solve several similar instances of the constraint satisfaction problem simultaneously. If multiple instances of …
