Heterogeneous Computing, Howard Jay Siegel, John K. Antonio, Richard C. Metzger, Min Tan, Yan Alexander Li
Heterogeneous Computing, Howard Jay Siegel, John K. Antonio, Richard C. Metzger, Min Tan, Yan Alexander Li
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A heterogeneous computing (HC) system provides a variety of architectural capabilities, orchestrated to perform an application whose subtasks have diverse execution requirements. One type of heterogeneous computing system is a mixed-mode machine, where a single machine can operate in different modes of parallelism. Another is a mixed-machine system, where a suite of different kinds of high-performance machines are interconnected by high-:speed links. To exploit such systems, a task must be decomposed into subtasks, where each subtask is computationally homogeneous. The subtasks are then assigned to and executed with the machines (or modes) that will result in a minimal overall execution …

Image Processing And Computer Graphics Algorithms For Surface Rendering From Mri Data. , Arda Kamil Bafra, Okan K. Ersoy, David J. Hansen
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The reconstruction of objects in three dimensions, from two-dimensional MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) slices is a powerful tool for better understanding of anatomical structures. In this work, a combination of image processing and computer graphics techniques has been used to develop the required algorithms for surface rendering of anatomical structures from MRI data. Surface rendering is performed in two stages. In the first stage, image processing techniques have been used to develop the required algorithms for the extraction of the data, which is then transferred to a computer graphics environment. The proposed algorithms are for successive automatic segmentation using Markov …

A Prototype Computational Phantom To Create Digital Images For Research And Training In Diagnostic Radiology, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
Research in the processing, compression, transmission, and interpretation of digital radiographic images require the testing and evaluation of a wide variety of images, varying both in format and in spatial resolution. If receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis or a related method is used to evaluate the performance of observers using novel vs. conventional displays, large numbers of test images containing known abnormalities are required. This report describes a convenient, inexpensive, and reproducible source of test images, having any desired resolution and containing precisely defined abnormalities of unlimited subtlety. The images are generated by computing x-ray transmission through mathematically defined, three …
Design And Analysis Of Transmitter Diversity Using Intentional Frequency Offset For Wireless Communications, Wen-Yi Kuo, Michael P. Fitz
Design And Analysis Of Transmitter Diversity Using Intentional Frequency Offset For Wireless Communications, Wen-Yi Kuo, Michael P. Fitz
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Coded modulation (usually with interleaving) is used in fading channel cornmunications to achieve good error performance. The major benefit froin using coded modulation in fading channels is achieved if each code symbol of a codeword (or coded sequence) suffers statistically different fading (preferably independent fading). However, in many applications of mobile communications (e.g. in a metropolitan environment), a low vehicle speed (and hence a small Doppler spread) is very common. With a small Doppler spread, ideal or close-to-ideal interleaving is no longer feasible and all code symbols of a codeword would suffer highly correlated fading especially in stationary fading (Doppler …

Explicit Orthonormal Bases For Functions Exhibiting The Rotational Symmetries Of A Platonic Solid, Yibin Zheng, Peter C. Doerschuk
Explicit Orthonormal Bases For Functions Exhibiting The Rotational Symmetries Of A Platonic Solid, Yibin Zheng, Peter C. Doerschuk
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
We compute explicit orthonormal bases for functions invariant under the rotational symmetries of a Platonic solid. Each function in the basis is a linear combination of spherical harmonics. For each symmetry (icosahedral, octahedral, tetrahedral) the calculation has three steps: First derive a bilinear equation for the coefficients by comparing the expansion of a symmetrized delta functioii in both spherical harmonics and the symmetric harmonics. The equation is parameterized by the location (Θ0,Ø0) of the delta function and must be ~at~isfiefodr all locations. Second, express t,he dependence on the delta function location in a Fourier (Ø0) and Taylor (Θ0) series and …
Dist A Distribution Independent Parallel Programs For Matrix Multiplication, Hyuk J. Lee, José A.B. Fortes
Dist A Distribution Independent Parallel Programs For Matrix Multiplication, Hyuk J. Lee, José A.B. Fortes
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This report considers the problem of writing data distribution independent (DDI) programs in order to eliminate or reduce initial data redistribution overheads for distributed memory parallel computers. The functionality and execution time of DDI programs are independent of initial data distributions. First, modular mappings, which can be used to derive many equally optimal ant1 functionally equivalent programs, are briefly reviewed. Relations between modular mappings and input data distributions are then established. These relations are the basis of a systematic approach to the derivation of DDI programs which is illustrated for matrix-matrix multiplication(c = a x b). Conditions on data distributions …

Tree Structured Grobner Basis Computation On Parallel Machines, Hemal V. Shah, Jose A. B. Fortes
Tree Structured Grobner Basis Computation On Parallel Machines, Hemal V. Shah, Jose A. B. Fortes
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
With the advent of symbolic mathematical software packages such as Maple, Mathematics, and Macsyma, symbolic computation has become widely used in many scientific applications. Though a significant effort has been put in performing numeric computation on multiprocessors, symbolic computation on parallel machines is still in an unexplored state. However, symbolic mathematical applications are ideal candidates for parallel processing, because they are computationally intensive. This paper considers the parallel computation of Grobner basis, a special basis for a multivariate polynomial ideal over a field that plays a key role in symbolic computation. Large Grobner basis computation poses a challenging problem due …

Modeling Of Growth Rates Of Selective Epitaxial Growth (Seg) And Epitaxial Lateral Overgrowth (Elo) Of Silicon In The Sih2cl2-Hcl-H2 System, Poonacha P. Kongetira, Gerold W. Neudeck, John P. Denton
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A semi-empirical model for the growth rate of selective epitaxial silicon(SEG) in the Dichlorosilane-HC1-Hz system that represents the experimenltal data has been presented. All epitaxy runs were done using a Gemini-I LPCVD pancake reactor. Dichlorosilane was used as the source gas and hydrogen as the carrier gas. Hydrogen Cllloride(HC1) was used to ensure that no nucleation took place on the oxide. The growth rate expression was considered to be the sum of a growth term dependent on the partial pressures of Dichlorosilane and hydrogen, and an etch berm that varies as the partial pressure of HC1. The growth and etch …

Scheduling A Superscalar Pipelined Processor Without Hardware Interlocks, Heng-Yi Chao, Mary P. Harper
Scheduling A Superscalar Pipelined Processor Without Hardware Interlocks, Heng-Yi Chao, Mary P. Harper
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling a set of instructions on a single processor with multiple pipelined functional units. In a superscalar processor, the hardware can issue multiple instructions every cycle, providing a fine-grained parallelism for achieving order-ofmagnitude speed-ups. It is well known that the problem of scheduling a pipelined processor with uniform latencies, which is a subclass of the problem we consider here, belongs to the class of NP-Complete problems. We present an efficient lower bound algorithm that coniputes a tight lower bound on the length of an optimal schedule, and a new heuristic scheduling algorithm …

The Impact Of Electronic Ballast Compact Fluorescent Lighting On Power Distribution Systems, Reid Iwao Sasaki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Due to the high costs of expanding generation and transmission capacities, utilities have been initiating programs to reduce peak power demand by the customer. A number of these programs, which are commonly referred to as demand side management programs, have turned to the promotion of electronic ballast compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) as an alternative to traditional incandescent lamps. These lamps provide a higher luminance and increased life as compared to their incandescent counterparts. Unfortunately, electronic ballast CFLs consume large amounts of harmonic current which may prove detrimental to the power distribution system. This thesis presents an introduction to the electronic …

C++ Class Libraries For Error Control Codes, Jamshid Nazari, Okan K. Ersoy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A tutorial on error control code is given and encoding and decoding using finite field transforms are outlined. Several C++ class libraries are then designed to implement some of the concepts in error control codes. A high level description of these libraries are given and several programs that. uses these libraries are presented. RS and BCH codes can be generated by these libraries from primitive polynomials where the user specifies the code size and number of errors to be corrected. Using these libraries power progra.ins in error control codes can be writtnen in less than few pages.
