Implementing Quotas In Gtap Using Gempack Or How To Linearize An Inequality, Christian F. Bach, Ken Pearson Nov 1996

Implementing Quotas In Gtap Using Gempack Or How To Linearize An Inequality, Christian F. Bach, Ken Pearson

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

This document describes how explicit import and export quotas can be implemented and solved in the GTAP CGE trade model. The techniques described here apply equally well to other general and partial equilibrium models implemented and solved using the GEMPACK software. They also generalise to procedures for handling other inequalities in models solved via GEMPACK (even though GEMPACK does not allow explicit inequalities in the algebraic representation of models). In this document we review some recent applications of GTAP in which explicit import and export quotas have been modelled, and discuss how important it was for these applications to have …

The Effect Of Edge Constraints On The Surface Normal Impedance Of Layers Of Elastic Porous Materials, N.-M. Shiau, W. Desmet, J Stuart Bolton Nov 1996

The Effect Of Edge Constraints On The Surface Normal Impedance Of Layers Of Elastic Porous Materials, N.-M. Shiau, W. Desmet, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

A two-dimensional model for wave propagation in elastic porous materials has been used to investigate the effects of edge constraints on the surface normal impedance of elastic porous materials when placed in standing wave tubes. The elastic porous material model used was based on the Biot theory and takes into account the three wave-types known to propagate within elastic porous materials. Previous work has indicated that the acoustical behavior of typical noise control foams can be very sensitive to small mounting details. Consequently, it is reasonable to expect that the surface normal impedance measured by placing foam in a standing …

Adaptive Multiresolution Image And Video Compression And Pre/Post-Processing Of Image And Video Streams , Hamid R. Rabiee, R. L. Kashyap

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This report is divided into two sections. In the first section, the focus is on adaptive transform-based image compression and motion compensation at low bit rates. A new adalptive algorithm for image representation and coding is introduced. This algorithm is based on the concept of segmented orthogonal matching pursuits (SOMP), and adaptively selects the best representation from an overcomplete dictionary of wavelet functions. In the second section, the pre-processing and post-processing of images and video streams are focused on. A new robust nonlinear filter based on the theory of generalized maximum likelihood and order statistics (GMLOS) is introduced. It is …

Parameter Estimation And Modeling Of Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon, Ji Cheol Kim, Richard J. Schwartz Nov 1996

Parameter Estimation And Modeling Of Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon, Ji Cheol Kim, Richard J. Schwartz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The use of hydrogenated amorphous silicon material(a-Si:H) in devices such as solar cells, active thin film transistor liquid crystal display panels, various sensors, etc. requires an accurate model of the material characteristics and their dependence on light intensity and light soaking over a broad temperature range. Through the use of nonlinear parameter estimation techniques, a gap state model and recombination parameters have been developed from temperature dependent photoconductivity data. These data include the effects of light intensity variation and light soaking. This model provides better agreement between the model and experimental results on a-Si:H than conventional models especially in lower …

Reconciling Bilateral Trade Data For Use In Gtap, Mark Gehlhar Oct 1996

Reconciling Bilateral Trade Data For Use In Gtap, Mark Gehlhar

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

Bilateral trade flows are reported by both importers and exporters. Large discrepancies in reported import/export trade flows can be found when these two reports are compared.

The GTAP database requires consistency between the export flow and its corresponding import flow for all partner pairs. Therefore, bilateral trade data in its reported form cannot be directly used for GTAP. Various methods can be used to produce a consistent set of bilateral trade flows. However, achieving consistency alone does not necessarily provide credible trade flows.

Matrix balancing using trade totals published by international agencies is not appropriate since these totals are not …

Between Pets And People: The Importance Of Animal Companionship, Alan M. Beck, Aaron Katcher Sep 1996

Between Pets And People: The Importance Of Animal Companionship, Alan M. Beck, Aaron Katcher

New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond

Pets play a greater role in our emotional and physical health than ever before, says the Purdue University professor who is co-author of his revised edition of Between Pets and People: The Importance of Animal Companionship. The book offers conclusive evidence from the two foremost researchers in the field, Alan M. Beck and Aaron H. Katcher, that animals have a significant influence on human life and health. Dealing with such varied topics as pet ownership and gender differences, the pet’s freedom from social taboos, and pets’ taking on roles of family members, the authors show that animal companionship affects, …

Benchmarking And Verification Of Bipolar Junction Transistor Tcad Simulation Programs, Carrie Ann Niemiec, Mark S. Lundstrom Aug 1996

Benchmarking And Verification Of Bipolar Junction Transistor Tcad Simulation Programs, Carrie Ann Niemiec, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This thesis contains the results from a benchmarking study, which involves comparing different device modeling approaches. After discussing the pflilosophical importance of accuracy and truth in science with respect to modeling, modern day simulation methods are discussed and a methodology defined. The modeling approaches compared are the drift-diffusion method, which is most commonly utilized currently, the hydrodynamic/energy transport method, which has greater rigor than drift-difision but has some convergence problems, and the scattering matrix approach, which fully solves the Boltzmann Transport Equation. The scattering matrix approach is used as the computational benchmark because it is the most rigorous and accurate …

Automatic Gradient Threshold Determination For Edge Detection Using A Statistical Model A Description Of The Model And Comparison Of Algorithms, Peter V. Henstock,, David M. Chelberg Aug 1996

Automatic Gradient Threshold Determination For Edge Detection Using A Statistical Model A Description Of The Model And Comparison Of Algorithms, Peter V. Henstock,, David M. Chelberg

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In the enhancement/thresholding method of edge detection, the gradient values of pixels exceeding a certain threshold are designated as edge pixels. However, selecting a threshold has commonly been performed through ad hoc measures. This paper describes a method for automatically selecting a threshold using a 5-parameter model. The model is based on the weighted sum of two gamma density functions corresponding to edge and ncln-edge pixels. A variety of statistical and fitting methods for finding the model parameters were evaluated by comparing their computed thresholds to perceptual thresholds determined by subjects for 16 different images. The performance of the model …

An Introduction To Systematic Sensitivity Analysis Via Gaussian Quadrature, Channing Arndt Jul 1996

An Introduction To Systematic Sensitivity Analysis Via Gaussian Quadrature, Channing Arndt

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

Economists recognize that results from simulation models are dependent, sometimes highly dependent, on values employed for critical exogenous variables.

To account for this, analysts sometimes conduct sensitivity analysis with respect to key exogenous variables.

This paper presents a practical approach for conducting systematic sensitivity analysis, called Gaussian quadrature.

The approach views key exogenous variables as random variables with associated distributions. It produces estimates of means and standard deviations of model results while requiring a limited number of solves of the model. Under mild conditions, all of which hold with respect to the GTAP model, there is strong reason to believe …

Effect Of Value Based Software Engineering On Development Projects, Raymond Paul, Mageda A. Sharafeddin, Y. Shinagawa, Arif Ghafoor Jul 1996

Effect Of Value Based Software Engineering On Development Projects, Raymond Paul, Mageda A. Sharafeddin, Y. Shinagawa, Arif Ghafoor

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Previous models of software development projects have failed to represent people productivity accurately. In this paper, we present a model characterized by realistic productivity curves and flexibility in choosing resource factors in a software engineering project. A two-mode mathematical model similar to PutnamNorden model js presented. The proposed model enhances the capability of engineering management users to make corrective actions when appropriate. It is extremely beneficial to detect problems and provide corrective actions since they are in many cases crucial to the successful project software engineering hiring and/or acquisition management planning to use the software product.
