Image Compression And Representation Using Wavelets, Shankar Moni, R. L. Kashyap Jul 1996

Image Compression And Representation Using Wavelets, Shankar Moni, R. L. Kashyap

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The focus of this research is to explore the structure present in the wavelet decomposition of natural images and use this structure for image compression and representation. We first show empirically that the wavelet coefficients of a natural image, when sorted by magnitude, lie almost exactly on a curve of the form $. This, in turn, helps us to demonstrate that natural images may exhibit self-similarity in the wavelet domain, although no such property may be apparent in the pixel domain. In order to predict which scale-space positions may have large wavelet coefficients, we define a data structure called a …

Suboptimal Target Tracking In Clutter Using A Generalized Probabilistic Data Association Algorithm, Wai Ying Kan, James V. Krogmeier Jun 1996

Suboptimal Target Tracking In Clutter Using A Generalized Probabilistic Data Association Algorithm, Wai Ying Kan, James V. Krogmeier

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Simple tracking algorithms based upon nearest neighbor filtering do not correctly consider measurement origin uncertainty and, therefore, fail to perform well in situations of high target density and clutter. The optimal tracking algorithm for commonly used targetclutter models computes the posterior density of the target state conditioned on the past history of' observations. This posterior density is a Gaussian mixture with the number of terms equal to the number of possible ways to associate observations and targets. Though a recursive algorithm may be developed for the optimal estimator, it requires exponentially growing rlemory and computation and is, therefore, unimplementable. In …

Computational Separation Of Bulk And Surface Recombination Using Contactless Photoconductive Decay, Frederick P. Giles, Richard J. Schwartz Apr 1996

Computational Separation Of Bulk And Surface Recombination Using Contactless Photoconductive Decay, Frederick P. Giles, Richard J. Schwartz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A novel, computational approach to distinguishing between bulk and surface recombination in crystalline silicon is presented. The Photoconductive Decay technique, applied with a probe of sufficiently long wavelength, senses no informiation about carrier diffusion or distributions in samples, thus isolating carrier recombination as the sole cause of its decay signal. If the recombination and transport parameters of' a sample remain cor~standt uring the decay, the information content and collective properties of the decay paIameters allow them to be solved simultaneously to produce unique values for the bulk lifetime and surface recombination velocities of the measurement sample. The method is rapid …

Extension Of The Receptance Technique To Accommodate Distributed Connections, Bryce K. Gardner, J Stuart Bolton Feb 1996

Extension Of The Receptance Technique To Accommodate Distributed Connections, Bryce K. Gardner, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

The receptance techniques has been used most frequently to analyze the vibrational response of structures that may be idealized as a set of substructures connected at one or more discrete points. However, the receptance technique can also be used to analyze the response of structures connected along particular types of line junctions. In this paper, an extension of the the receptance technique is presented that makes use of a generalized Fourier series approach to allow the evaluation of both the free and forced response of systems comprising components connected through spatially distributed junctions. The present extension is shown to reduce …

Efficent Use Of Narrowband Radio Channels For Mobile Digltal Communications, Michael P. Fitz, James V. Krogmeier, Jimm Grimm, Tai Ann Chen, Tim Magnusen, Jerome Gansman, Wen Yi Kuo

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) relies heavily on data communications systems to link field equipment such as traflic: sensors, changeable message signs and incident response vehicles with traffic operations centers. The Federal Highway A~iministration (FHWA) has received an allocation of five channels in the 220 MHz band to provide a communication resource for ITS applications. This report investigates a high efficiency mobile \vireless modem with a spectral efficiency of 3 bps&. The modem incorporates the following techniques to compensate for the fading channel: transmitter antenna diversity, modulation using intentional frequency offset, interleaved block codles, symbol timing and frame synchr~mizationo ptimized …

Managing A Network Of Plants Within Multinational Firms, Thomas Brush, Catherine Maritan, Aneel Karnani Jan 1996

Managing A Network Of Plants Within Multinational Firms, Thomas Brush, Catherine Maritan, Aneel Karnani

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The paper examines whether plants with different roles in a multinational network of plants use different management systems to coordinate production and technical decision. The paper first tests and supports the Ferdows (1989) technology distinctions concerning plant roles. Following Ferdows (1989), it empirically examines the proposition that the degree of managerial autonomy varies according to strategic role of the plant. Our findings suggest that different plant roles require different management systems and different levels of responsibility for decisions. Further, it shows which systems need to be differentiated if plants with different roles are combined within the same business unit.

A Survey Of Evidence On Domestic And International Stock Exchange Listings With Implications For Markets And Managers, John M. Mcconnell, Heidi J. Dybevik, David Haushalter, Erik Lie

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

As new equity markets continue to emerge worldwide, the topic area of stock exchange listings has sparked interest among financial scholars and corporate managers alike. In this article, we review and synthesize empirical studies that examine both new and dual international and intranational listings of common stocks. The studies that we review have been conducted to provide managers and policty makers with information about the effects of listing on stock prices and to use listings as a venue to provide insights about market organization, market micro-structure, factors that determine stock prices and returns, and international capital market integration. In general, …

Trade Creation And Trade Diversion: New Empirical Results, Jon D. Haveman, David L. Hummels Jan 1996

Trade Creation And Trade Diversion: New Empirical Results, Jon D. Haveman, David L. Hummels

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

In recent years, there has been a rise in the popularity of preferential trading arrangements (PTA), and an equally precipitous rise in the number of papers studying the effects of regionalism. In this paper we assess the effect of preferential trading arrangements on the aggregate and bilateral trading patterns of member countries, and test for three effects of PTAs.
