An Investigation Of Flicker Reduction Using An Adaptive Var Compensator, Juri V. Jatskevich, Oleg Wasynczuk Mar 1997

An Investigation Of Flicker Reduction Using An Adaptive Var Compensator, Juri V. Jatskevich, Oleg Wasynczuk

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A detailed computer model of a three-phase power network which includes inductive loads, resistance welders and an Adaptive Var Compensator (AVC) has been developed. The system configuration and parameters correspond to an irrdustrial customer served by a large electric utility. Welder operation produces severe cyclic flicker which leads to customer complaints. Computer studies have been conducted to determine the effectiveness of the AVC on the reduction of observable flicker at neighboring loads. Flicker severity was determined using the UE 1 E C flickermeter technique adopted for 120-V incandescent lamps. Different control strategies involving the AVC have been considered and compared …

Reducing Glitching And Leakage Power In Low Voltage Cmos Circuits, Zhanping Chen, Liqiong Wei, Kaushik Roy Mar 1997

Reducing Glitching And Leakage Power In Low Voltage Cmos Circuits, Zhanping Chen, Liqiong Wei, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The need for low power dissipation in portable computing and wireless communication is making design communities accept ultra low voltage CMOS processes. With the lowering of' supply voltage, the transistor thresholds (Vth) have to be scaled down to meet the performance requirements. However, such scaling can increase the leakage current through a transistor, thereby increasing the leakage power. It can also be noted that in static CMOS circuits, the paths converging to any internal gate may have different propagation delays. The delay mismatch of' different paths causes spurious transitions. Such transitions increase the power dissipation due to the switching component …

Detecting The Abnormal: Machine Learning In Computer Security, Terran Lane, Carla E. Brodley Feb 1997

Detecting The Abnormal: Machine Learning In Computer Security, Terran Lane, Carla E. Brodley

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

TINOpr oblems of importance in computer security are to I) detect the presence of an intruder masquerading as the valid user and 2) detect the perpetration of abusive actions on the part of an otherwise innocuous user. In this paper we present a machine learning approach to anomaly detection, desigined to handle these two problems. Our system learns a user profile for each user account and subsequently employs it to detect anomalous behavior in that account. Based on sequences of actions (UNIX commands) of the current user's input sti:earn, the system compares each fixed-length input sequence with a historical library …

A Methodology For Designing Image Similarity Metrics Based On Human Visual System Models, Thomas Frese, Charles A. Bouman, Jan P. Allebach Feb 1997

A Methodology For Designing Image Similarity Metrics Based On Human Visual System Models, Thomas Frese, Charles A. Bouman, Jan P. Allebach

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this report we present an image similarity metric for content-based image database search. The similarity metric is based on a multiscale model of the human visual system. This multiscale model includes channels which account for perceptual phenomena such as color, contrast, color-contrast and orientation selectivity. From these channels, we extract features and then forin an aggregate measure of similarity using a weighted linear combination of the feature differences. The choice of features and weights is :made to maximize the consistency with similarity ratings made by human subjects. In particular, we use a visual test to collect experimental image matching …

What Can We Learn From Bilateral Trade? Gravity And Beyond, Jon Haveman, David L. Hummels Jan 1997

What Can We Learn From Bilateral Trade? Gravity And Beyond, Jon Haveman, David L. Hummels

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Much empirical international trade reserach requires a careful analysis of bilateral trade patterns. In this paper we examine a commonly used technique called the gravity equation. Though the use of the gravity equation on aggregate data is well-grounded in monopolistic competition trade theory, we show that central predictions necessary for its derivation can be rejected with simple tests on disaggregated data

Automating Field Data Collection In Maintenance Operations, Bob G. Mccullouch Jan 1997

Automating Field Data Collection In Maintenance Operations, Bob G. Mccullouch

JTRP Technical Reports

Field data collection and management in DOT organizations requires a considerable amount of resources in the form of personnel and management systems. Recent studies performed by the researcher revealed that an average of 30-50% of some field supervisory personnel's time is spent on processing field data paperwork. This is a considerable amount of time spent on an undesirable task and is taking these employees away from more important job duties. This project automated two maintenance field data collection functions. One was a Crew Day Card, which is a card used by a maintenance crew to document the activity performed. Information …

Study Of Side Ditch Liners For Highway Application, Anthony S. Calderon, Philippe L. Bourdeau Jan 1997

Study Of Side Ditch Liners For Highway Application, Anthony S. Calderon, Philippe L. Bourdeau

JTRP Technical Reports

Over the past few years, the INDOT new materials department has received numerous erosion control products (mostly geosynthetics) to evaluate as alternatives to riprap and concrete in ditch liners. Potential benefits include lower construction costs and better aesthetics over current products. Unfortunately, no specification, design methodology, or classification system currently exists for these erosion control blankets.

In this project's phase I, existing information and knowledge on erosion control materials used to line highway side drainage ditches were investigated. From the available technical1iterature (journal and conference publications, other DOTs specifications, manufacturer documentation, independent test laboratory test data), design methodologies, classification system, …

Indot Multimedia Applications Prototype Development, Bob G. Mccullouch

JTRP Technical Reports

Multimedia technologies open a new data set for DOT organizations. By adding pictures, sounds, animation, and video, new computer applications can be developed that will bring many benefits. This project investigated the utilization of multimedia into DOT operations. Applications were developed in three different topical areas: Employee Information or Orientation, a Bridge Plan Reading course, and a Construction Equipment utilization prototype. The first two are fully developed implementable tools that will be utilized by INDOT. These developments provide insight into how multimedia can be a useful tool for training and providing performance support to DOT employees. Other tools can be …

Freeway Incident Likelihood Prediction And Response Decision-Making, Samer Madanat, Hongyu Pan, Pen-Chi Liu, Hualiang Teng

JTRP Technical Reports

This research project consisted of two parts. The first part developed a set of real-time incident likelihood prediction models. The second part developed a freeway incident response decision-making methodology based on sequential hypothesis testing methods. The freeway incident likelihoods predicted by the real-time prediction models act as prior probabilities for the freeway incident response decision-making system. The products of this research project will be incorporated in the Advanced Traffic Management System that is being implemented on the Borman Expressway, a 16-mile segment of I-80 in northwest Indiana. The decision-making system can be used by traffic management personnel to assist in …
