A Methodology For The Determination And Communication Of Requirements For An Information Processing System, Carl Allen Singer Apr 1976

A Methodology For The Determination And Communication Of Requirements For An Information Processing System, Carl Allen Singer

Open Access Dissertations

A Requirements Statement Methodology is developed and coupled with a solution to the database design problem. The need for the Requirements Statement Methodology is discussed with the viewpoint of management texts and systems design guidelines. The methodology is developed using forms, computer generated forms, a data dictionary and interactive dialogue. A detailed explanation of PSL (the Problem Statement Language) and PSA (Problem Statement Analyzer) in the context of the Requirements Statement Methodology is presented. A formal discussion of data base design, specifically record and set design, appears. A theoretical model to solve record design is developed and a hueristic and …

Remote Sensing - The Role Of The Supplier, S. S. Viglione Jan 1976

Remote Sensing - The Role Of The Supplier, S. S. Viglione

LARS Symposia

I have been asked to address the question of what is the responsibility of the business community, those providing hardware, software and services, to assist in the transfer of remote sensing technology.

By exclusion, let me suggest that the development of sensors, instruments, data processing systems or application programs for NASA or EROS not be part of the topic for consideration. This segment of the market, possibly the largest in dollar volume at this time, does not to my mind represent a transfer of remote sensing technology. However, other government agencies, including other segments of the Department of Interior do …

An Approach To The Design Of A Linear Binary Tree Classifier, K. C. You, K. S. Fu Jan 1976

An Approach To The Design Of A Linear Binary Tree Classifier, K. C. You, K. S. Fu

LARS Symposia

The overall performance of a multi-stage decision- tree classifier has been shown to be better than that of the conventional single-stage classifier with the same number of features because different feature subsets can be selected at different stages. But, the classification time increases due to the complexity of computation. The linear binary tree classifier designed by the method proposed in this study takes the advantages of the accuracy of a decision-tree classifier and uses linear discriminant functions at decision stages to reduce the classification time. An application of this method to the multispectral remotely sensed data is presented. All ten …

Needed: A Better Approach To State And Federal Agencies, Chris J. Johannsen Jan 1976

Needed: A Better Approach To State And Federal Agencies, Chris J. Johannsen

LARS Symposia

Remote sensing projects in Missouri were conducted by several state agencies, the University of Missouri, the University of Kansas, and several federal agencies during the 60's. Many used aerial photography before that time period. During the 70's, remote sensing efforts continued among the participants but with better communication and coordination.

The Missouri approach is not unusual. Basically we have been attempting to teach state and federal agency personnel how to use aerial photography and space images to assist them with their work. Research efforts have been closely tied to the needs of the user with actual involvement in the research. …

Automated Ground Coordinate Sampling, George E. Lukes Jan 1976

Automated Ground Coordinate Sampling, George E. Lukes

LARS Symposia

Analytical techniques have been designed, tested and implemented that provide automated procedures for referencing terrain locations defined by ground coordinates in digital images. Based on principles of analytical photogrammetry, these techniques termed projective sampling, rigorously account for camera position and orientation Corrections for lens distortion, atmospheric refraction, film deformation and other sources of systematic distortion can be incorporated. A ground coordinate data base, an image digitizer which also serves as a comparator and well-defined imaging geometry, such as that of frame cameras, are required.

The Automated Recognition Of Urban Development From Landsat Images, P. Carter, M. Jackson Jan 1976

The Automated Recognition Of Urban Development From Landsat Images, P. Carter, M. Jackson

LARS Symposia

The problems and progress made in the development of automated methods for the recognition and extraction of urban land use features from the LANDSAT digital data of the UK are described. In the data examined so far density slicing in one waveband appears to be almost as effective as multiwaveband classification in selecting the urban areas. While absolute boundaries may be difficult to delineate, new developments may be recognisable which would be adequate for monitoring needs. It appears important to include the effects of seasonal change and make use of texural analysis in the classification process.

Sequential Classification And Clustering Methods Applied To Digitized Photographs, Chapman P. Gleason Jan 1976

Sequential Classification And Clustering Methods Applied To Digitized Photographs, Chapman P. Gleason

LARS Symposia

This paper presents a system for object detection and counting from transparencies digitized using a scanning microdensitometer. Classification and clustering methods are applied sequentially to digitized transparencies of an orange tree and a low altitude color infrared aerial photograph of a citrus orange. The objective is to count oranges on the digitized ground transparency and to count fruit trees on the digitized infrared aerial photograph. This general flow can be applied to any type of spectral data for object detection and counting.
