Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

HAEFFNERS MODEL, RESEARCH POLICY, INFORMATION FLOW, COMMUNICATIONS ABILITY, COMMUNICATION MEDIA MIX, INFORMATION MINDEDNESS DATABASES, INSPEC, ISMEC, MECHEN, DOMA, COMPENDEX, SAIDC-ST

Haeffners model of information flow and communication between research policy and implementation activities was transferred on integrated information flow between research, education, consuiting and informatics on one side, and the end-user on the other side.

For information flow neither the availability of documents, computers and communications, nor the information mindedness are sufficient, but the human activity is dominant.

Databases are in different fields of application differently aggregated and representative (Comparison between CHEMABS, INSPEC, ISMEC, COMPENDEX).

The information field in mechanical …

A Technique To Determine Which Crop Development Stages Can Be Estimated From Spectral Data, V. J. Pollara, V. C. Vanderbilt, C. S. T. Daughtry Jan 1981

A Technique To Determine Which Crop Development Stages Can Be Estimated From Spectral Data, V. J. Pollara, V. C. Vanderbilt, C. S. T. Daughtry

LARS Symposia

Estimates of crop development stage by remote sensing techniques are potentially more cost effective for large areas than present labor intensive estimates. Here, discriminant analysis for identifying crop development stage using multispectral data is discussed. The data analyzed were Exotech 100 measurements in four wavelength bands (.5-.6, .6-.7, .7-.8, .8-1.1 um) over field plots of soybeans and corn in West Lafayette, Indiana. Different row spacings, soils, plant populations, planting dates, soybean cultivars and crop years (1978, 1979, 1980) increased the generality of the data set.

Results show that development stage classes at the beginning and end of the growing, season …

Processing System Techniques For The 80'S, Roger A. Holmes Jan 1981

Processing System Techniques For The 80'S, Roger A. Holmes

LARS Symposia

Increased spatial resolution of oncoming systems such as Thematic Mapper and the French SPOT, plus experience gained in the LANDSAT MSS lead to a requirement to understand the error sources in the scene-to-data tape portion of a remote sensing system. An evaluation of this portion of the system and its effects on processing remote sensing data derived therefrom is presented. Discussion is limited to passive sensors in the reflective portion of the spectrum.

Contextual Classification On A Cdc Flexible Processor System, B. W. Smith, H. J. Siegel, P. H. Swain

LARS Symposia

Contextual classifiers are being developed to exploit spatial/spectral content of a pixel to achieve higher classification accuracy. Contextual classification requires large amounts of computation, so special hardware is of value. One parallel processing system designed for image processing is the CDC Flexible Processor Array, the basis for the discussion in this paper. A simulator for the CDC Flexible Processor Array has been developed for program testing, debugging and timing. The simulated timings are presented in this paper. For comparison, the same algorithms have been run on a PDP-11/70. These timings are analyzed and discussed for context neighborhoods of size three …

Procedure 1 And Forestland Classification Using Landsat Data, Ross F. Nelson, Roger M. Hoffer Jan 1981

Procedure 1 And Forestland Classification Using Landsat Data, Ross F. Nelson, Roger M. Hoffer

LARS Technical Reports

Procedure 1 approaches to developing land cover classifications were compared with the Multicluster Blocks process on a 15,000 hectare forested area in southwestern Colorado. Results showed that P-1 (using the clustering processor in an unseeded, iterative mode) performed as well as the Multicluster Blocks approach on the rugged study area. The average accuracies of classification for the best P-1 method and the McB approach were 77.8 and 75.3 percent respectively; overall accuracies were 88.3 and 87.4 percent respectively.

These results may interest the forestry community or any resource discipline which has available to it ground-checked or photointerpreted point (or plot) …

Crop Area Estimation Using Ground Gathered And Sampled Landsat Data, James W. Mergerson Jan 1981

Crop Area Estimation Using Ground Gathered And Sampled Landsat Data, James W. Mergerson

LARS Symposia

This paper describes a comparative study in which a procedure using ground gathered data and classified LANDSAT data for estimating crop area was compared to procedures using ground gathered data and sampled LANDSAT data. Data from parts of Iowa and Missouri were used. Unitemporal data were used in Iowa and multitemporal data were used in Missouri. Results indicate that some sampling schemes can be used without any significant difference in the crop area estimates, but with a large reduction in cost for corn, soybeans, and winter wheat.

Crop Monitoring In Australia Using Digital Analysis Of Landsat Data, Ken W. Dawbin, David W. Beach Jan 1981

Crop Monitoring In Australia Using Digital Analysis Of Landsat Data, Ken W. Dawbin, David W. Beach

LARS Symposia

This paper describes on-going co-operative research by the New South Wales (N.S.W.) Department of Agriculture and IBM Australia Limited. The aims of the project are to investigate if Landsat digital data can be used to map and monitor agricultural resources, particularly crop acreages and production, over large areas.

From the outset, multi-temporal whole scene computation has been a feature of the technical approach. Software modifications for large data volumes were carried out allowing supervised maximum likelihood classification to be used throughout the work. Considerable amounts of agronomic ground truth have been collected over wide latitudes for use in training the …

The Role Of Digital Terrain Models In The Remote Sensing Of Forests, B. Guindon, D. G. Goodenough, P. M. Teillet

LARS Symposia

Approximately one half of Canada's marketable forests are located in mountainous areas. If this vital resource is to be monitored using high resolution satellite and airborne sensors, topographic information must be incorporated into image analysis procedures.

For the past two years, research has been on-going at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing into the integration of digital terrain models with imagery for the purposes of estimating timber volume and energy. This paper describes the principal components of our processing scheme with particular emphasis on the use of elevation, slope and aspect data.

Imagery is first rectified to a map grid …

Digital Correction Of Solar Illumination And Viewing Angle Artifacts In Remotely Sensed Images, Tsutomu Shibata, Werner Frei, Mark Sutton Jan 1981

Digital Correction Of Solar Illumination And Viewing Angle Artifacts In Remotely Sensed Images, Tsutomu Shibata, Werner Frei, Mark Sutton

LARS Symposia

We seek to understand and correct shading artifacts caused by varying solar illumination conditions and different viewing angles in remotely sensed images. A synthetic image simulating the shading effects for the sun angle and viewing angle as a real image, is generated using a terrain reflectance model and digital elevation data. A good correlation is obtained between the real and synthetic images. The artifact correction is then made, and a resulting image shows useful information that is not apparent in the original image.

We also present a three-dimensional perspective representation of a terrain with a corresponding aerial photograph mapped on …

Data Compression Of Sar/Mss Data Sets, Korehiro Maeda, David G. Goodenough Jan 1981

Data Compression Of Sar/Mss Data Sets, Korehiro Maeda, David G. Goodenough

LARS Symposia

Earth observation satellites from NASA, France, the European Space Agency, Japan, and Canada will provide us with higher resolutions and more channels of remotely sensed data. If effective compression methods can be developed, there are potentially large cost savings to be obtained in transmitting, processing, storing, and disseminating these data. Resource management systems will likely make use of data from a variety of satellites having sensors operating in visible, infrared, and microwave regions. Research at CCRS in combining synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and multispectral scanner (MSS) imagery has demonstrated the complementarity of these data for agricultural interpretations (Goodenough et al, …
