Globalizing Compassion, Photography, And The Challenge Of Terror, Ariel Dorfman Oct 2007

Globalizing Compassion, Photography, And The Challenge Of Terror, Ariel Dorfman

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Globalizing Compassion, Photography, and the Challenge of Terror," Ariel Dorfman reflects on the use of photography to make global violence visible and to mourn the losses caused by acts of terror. Dorfman draws on events that range from the attacks on the World Trade Center to Pinochet's dictatorship to other similar atrocities and he shows that, while these events always feel singular in the moment, they are best understood comparatively. At the core of the paper is a central question: does the shared practice of using photos to represent terror help build bridges across humanity or does …

Democracy's Promise And The Politics Of Worldliness In The Age Of Terror, Henry A. Giroux Oct 2007

Democracy's Promise And The Politics Of Worldliness In The Age Of Terror, Henry A. Giroux

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Democracy's Promise and the Politics of Worldliness in the Age of Terror," Henry A. Giroux draws attention to how the crisis in US-American democracy has been heralded and exacerbated by the nation's increasing skepticism -- or even overt hostility -- toward the educational system. Part of such a challenge means that educators, artists, students, and others need to rethink and affirm the important presupposition that higher education is integral to fostering the imperatives of an inclusive democracy and that the crisis of higher education must be understood as part of the wider crisis of politics, power, and …

Electro-Thermal Transport In Nanotube Based Composites For Macroelectronic Applications, Satish Kumar Oct 2007

Electro-Thermal Transport In Nanotube Based Composites For Macroelectronic Applications, Satish Kumar

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Masters Theses

Dispersions of particles of different shapes and sizes in fluids or solids modify the transport properties of the underlying matrix. A remarkable enhancement in the electrical, thermal and other transport properties of the matrix due to the long aspect ratio dispersions like nanotube/nanowires has been observed my many research groups. This has motivated tremendous research to explore these composites for various macro-electronic and micro-electronic applications in the last decade. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) network based thin-film transistors (TFTs) promise improved performance for flexible plastic electronics with potential applications in displays, e-paper, e-clothing, bio-chemical sensing, conformal radar, and others. A detailed theoretical …

Eigenvalue Solvers For Atomistic Simulations Of Electronic Structures With Nemo-3d, Maxim Naumov, Sunhee Lee, Ben Haley, Rajib Rahman, Hoo Ryu, Faisal Saied, Steve Clark, Gerhard Klimeck Oct 2007

Eigenvalue Solvers For Atomistic Simulations Of Electronic Structures With Nemo-3d, Maxim Naumov, Sunhee Lee, Ben Haley, Rajib Rahman, Hoo Ryu, Faisal Saied, Steve Clark, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

In the atomistic simulation of electronic structures (e.g. quantum dots, Fig. 1), it is imperative to take advantage of the most efficient parallel numerical algorithms. In order to determine the energy levels and corresponding wave functions of interest, we need to find few of the interior eigenvalues of a large sparse standard Hermitian eigenvalue problem. Several algorithms have been devised for such problems, including (P)ARPACK [1], (Block) Lanczos [2] and Tracemin [3]. In this paper, the tradeoffs of these algorithms for the solution of eigenvalue problems arising in Nanoelectronic Modeling tool NEMO-3D [4], [5] will be discussed. The effectiveness of …

Analysis Of A Class Of Distributed Randomized Algorithms On Randomly Changing Network Graphs, Jen-Yeu Chen, Jianghai Hu Sep 2007

Analysis Of A Class Of Distributed Randomized Algorithms On Randomly Changing Network Graphs, Jen-Yeu Chen, Jianghai Hu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Dynamical connection graph changes are inherent in networks such as peer-to-peer networks, wireless ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks. Considering the influence of the frequent graph changes is thus essential for precisely assessing the performance of applications and algorithms on such networks. With two-fold states, stochastic hybrid systems (SHSs) can effectively model the dynamics of the execution of algorithms on a network with random and frequent graph changes. In this report, using SHSs, we analyze the performance of an epidemic-like algorithm, DRG (Distributed Random Grouping), for average aggregate computation on a wireless sensor network with dynamical graph changes. The …

Device physics and material science meet at the atomic scale of novel nanostructured semiconductors, and the distinction between new device or new material is blurred. Not only the quantum-mechanical effects in the electronic states of the device but also the granular atomistic representation of the underlying material are important. Approaches based on a continuum representation of the underlying material typically used by device engineers and physicists become invalid. Ab initio methods used by material scientists typically do not represent the band gaps and masses precisely enough for device design, or they do not scale to realistically large device sizes. The …

Indiana Emergency Medical Services Needs Assessment: Workforce And Training Issues, George H. Avery Ph.D., Mpa, Kelly Manicke Rn, Marie Fialkowski Ms, Deborah Koester Msn, Ann Fogler Bs Sep 2007

Indiana Emergency Medical Services Needs Assessment: Workforce And Training Issues, George H. Avery Ph.D., Mpa, Kelly Manicke Rn, Marie Fialkowski Ms, Deborah Koester Msn, Ann Fogler Bs

RCHE Reports

A mail survey was conducted to assess issues related to the EMS workforce and EMS workforce training in Indiana. Responses were received from approximately 45% of individuals and EMS organization contacted.

Major findings are:

Evidence exists of a shortage of EMS personnel in Indiana due to high vacancy rates. This is particularly acute in volunteer organizations, which report the greatest difficulty in recruiting EMS personnel.

Paid EMS personnel work on average significantly more than a standard 40 hour week, and high percentages of EMS personnel add a second job. Because excessive working hours have been linked to low quality healthcare, …

African Literature And The Role Of The Nigerian Government College Umuahia, Terri Ochiagha Sep 2007

African Literature And The Role Of The Nigerian Government College Umuahia, Terri Ochiagha

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Terri Ochiagha, in her paper "African Literature and the Role of the Nigerian Government College Umuahia," discusses how the college contributed towards nurturing the talent of some of the most relevant authors in African literary history. With the help of the testimonies of these authors in interviews, correspondence, essays, autobiographies, and with the aid of literary critics and scholars who realized the role the Umuahia College played in creating a literary elite, Ochiagha analyses this literary phenomenon and takes us on a journey through the school's literary ambience: its library and the novels which were later to prompt the authors' …

The "Teucer Paradigm" And The Eastern Other In Western Literature, Maria Beatrice Bittarello Sep 2007

The "Teucer Paradigm" And The Eastern Other In Western Literature, Maria Beatrice Bittarello

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "The 'Teucer Paradigm' and the Eastern Other in Western Literature," Maria Beatrice Bittarello argues that modern representations of characters with mixed-blood heritage (Western and Eastern) are rooted in classical representations of the Middle East and that such representations are thematically re-cast from a literary thematic archetype elaborated on in the ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Bittarello examines how Greek and Roman authors portray the Greek mythological hero Teucer, son of Telamon and the Trojan princess Hesione. Teucer's liminal position allows him to be used in already in Greek and Roman culture both as colonizer and "bridge" between …
