A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of German And American Graduate Business Students, Stefanie Borst Dec 2007

A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of German And American Graduate Business Students, Stefanie Borst

Global Business Languages

This paper reports on results of a comparative assessment of MBA students at highly ranked business schools in Germany and the USA. The results from a demographic and attitude questionnaire, and the results from a reading and writing assessment are discussed, and areas of significant variation between the German and American students are highlighted. Striking differences were found in several areas, even though the German and American students were similar with respect to educational level and professional goals. Since international MBAs like these students will ultimately work with each other in the global business community, I propose that understanding these …

Miss Universe In The Land Of Missery: Ecuador's Contradictory Development Package, Isabel Dulfano Dec 2007

Miss Universe In The Land Of Missery: Ecuador's Contradictory Development Package, Isabel Dulfano

Global Business Languages

Given the wealth generated by oil reserves as well as the promise of economic recovery through dollarization, it is striking to note that the sociopolitical and economic reality of Ecuador contradicts theoretical predictions of prosperity and growth. Economics is only part of the explanation. In fact, social and cultural factors have had a dramatic impact on the current state of affairs in Ecuador. The country faces many of the challenges evident in other Latin American countries and thus serves as a microcosm of regional development issues. We examine the indigenous movement, economic crisis, rainforest preservation, migration, and other factors affecting …

Us-Asian Communication Strategies To Develop Trust In Business Relationships, Christine Uber Grosse

Global Business Languages

Personal relationships matter in Asian business, in contrast to their lesser role in US business. As a result, US managers do not always understand the need to establish trust and build business relationships with Asian partners and clients. This study investigates strategies that US managers can use to develop trust in business relationships with Asian partners. In the process, it examines the knowledge, attitude, and skills that US and Asian managers can use to establish business relationships. The research findings suggest that language and cultural knowledge are of primary importance in building trust. Attitudes of patience, humility, friendship, interest, respect, …

Doing International Business: From Cultural Perspectives, Charles Calvert, Shinyi Lin, Lynda Martin Dec 2007

Doing International Business: From Cultural Perspectives, Charles Calvert, Shinyi Lin, Lynda Martin

Global Business Languages

The remarkable growth of the global economy over the past 50 years has been shaped by the dynamic interplay of various driving and restraining forces. From business and HRD (Human Resource Development) aspects, an understanding of globalization as it applies to the field of training and educational programs enables organizations to develop competencies and skills to respond to these emerging challenges faced by globalization. In recent reports (Yager, 2001; O’Regan, 2001), employers are increasingly having trouble finding workers who have excellent (1) soft skills, (2) business etiquette, (3) interpersonal communication skills, and (4) intercultural communication skills. An international business organization …

Business Languages And The Use Of English In Multilingual Switzerland, Margrit Zinggeler Dec 2007

Business Languages And The Use Of English In Multilingual Switzerland, Margrit Zinggeler

Global Business Languages

Switzerland, the small, highly industrialized, neutral nation, is known for its linguistic diversity (four national languages) and international appeal for business and humanitarian organizations. This article describes the historical background of language and industrial development in Switzerland, and it examines how language use in the workplace, in school, and at home has changed over the last decades. To illustrate these changes, it uses data from the national census of 1990 and 2000 as well as academic investigations about language distribution. The main focus is on how English has become a major business language and how schools are responding to the …
