Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI),1 is a significant public health issue responsible for a variety of cognitive, emotional, and somatic symptoms and deficits (3). It is unclear why some individuals appear to recover relatively quickly while others suffer prolonged symptoms and impairments (4–7). Robust clinical means of diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment are also lacking (8–11). Research is hindered by an inadequate classification system for traumatic brain injury (TBI) (12), “poor” study quality (13, 14), disagreement about appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria for concussion (8, 15), and an incomplete understanding of underlying pathophysiology (16–18). The heterogeneity and …
Representations Of Feminist Theory And Gender Issues In Introductory-Level Sociology Textbooks, Jena Amber Zarza
Representations Of Feminist Theory And Gender Issues In Introductory-Level Sociology Textbooks, Jena Amber Zarza
Dissertations and Theses
A review of sociological literature reveals a long history of the study of gender, and an increased popularity in the application of feminist theories and ideas to sociological research. As transmitters of the discipline, introductory-level textbooks have been heavily studied over the past quarter-century to assess the accuracy with which they portray the field of sociology. In order to update the literature available on the topic, this study analyzed the current cohort of top-selling, introductory-level sociology textbooks for coverage of feminist theory and gender issues. Each of the ten textbooks was read cover-to-cover and coded for both latent and manifest …

Masculinity, Mental Health, And Modern Psychotherapy: From The Practitioner’S Mind, Logan Schwartz
University Honors Theses
This study seeks to explore the influential nature of masculinity norms on male mental health from a clinician's viewpoint. Specifically, the research examines the unique outcomes of all male therapy groups as a way to better understand the complex social and psychological dynamics of gender role adherence. A ten question Qualtrics survey was distributed via email to therapists who are currently advertising a “men’s issues” support group on Psychology Today’s “Find a Therapist” online directory. The questionnaire asked each practitioner to reflect upon their clinical experience working with men, interpersonal process groups, and contemporary issues regarding masculinity norms in America. …
The Importance Of An Intersectional Approach To Gender-Based Violence In South Africa, Sophie Allen
The Importance Of An Intersectional Approach To Gender-Based Violence In South Africa, Sophie Allen
University Honors Theses
Gender-based violence is an issue of major concern in South Africa and is a result of an intersectionality of oppressors. A culture of violence, firmly established by racist and classist historical institutions, remains prominent. In addition, the culture outwardly focuses on tensions of race and class, rather than the oppression of gender. Historical female oppression and patriarchal cultural patterns existed before the introduction of white rule. This phenomenon of South African culture particularly focusing on race and class as oppressors that contribute to gender-based violence, instead of patriarchal norms, can be observed through two major frameworks: discourses of rape and …
Actualizing Teacher Pedagogical Aims Through One To One Student To Chromebook Integration: A Case Study, Alaina Loescher
Actualizing Teacher Pedagogical Aims Through One To One Student To Chromebook Integration: A Case Study, Alaina Loescher
University Honors Theses
Current research in the field of educational technology operates under the assumption that one to one student to technology use in classroom has the capacity to increase student achievement while placing responsibility on teachers to actualize this aim. However, qualitative research is needed that illustrates real teachers’ integration of technology in their classrooms. Thus, this research employs participant-observer, case study methodology to answer the question: How is one teacher utilizing Chromebooks at a 1:1 student to device ratio in accordance with her own personal pedagogical beliefs? This research found that the participant teacher utilized Chromebooks, and specifically the sites Khan …
Organizational Calling And Safety: The Role Of Workload And Supervisor Support, Layla Rhiannon Mansfield
Organizational Calling And Safety: The Role Of Workload And Supervisor Support, Layla Rhiannon Mansfield
Dissertations and Theses
Research suggests that individuals who perceive their work as a calling (a deep passion and meaningfulness associated with a certain domain) experience a variety of positive outcomes such as occupational identification, career decidedness, and job satisfaction. Utilizing the tenets of Social Exchange Theory and the Job Demands Resources Model, I proposed that individuals with greater calling toward their occupation will report higher safety motivation and safety compliance. However, under conditions of high workload this relationship would be attenuated. Further, by the same rationale, individuals with lower calling will report lower safety outcomes, yet I proposed that this relationship is mitigated …

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: The media has devoted significant attention to anecdotes of individuals who post messages on Facebook prior to suicide. However, it is unclear to what extent social media is perceived as a source of help or how it compares to other sources of potential support for mental health problems.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the degree to which military veterans with depression use social media for help-seeking in comparison to other more traditional sources of help.
Methods: Cross-sectional self-report survey of 270 adult military veterans with probable major depression. Help-seeking intentions were measured with a modified General Help-Seeking …

Social Position Influencing The Water Perception Gap Between Local Leaders And Constituents In A Socio-Hydrological System, Melissa Haeffner, Douglas Jackson-Smith, Courtney G. Flint
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
How well city leaders represent their constituents and meet their needs are key concerns in transitioning to local sustainable water governance. To date, however, there is little research documenting the influence of social position between elected leaders who make policy, career staff water managers who design and operate systems and implement policies, and the members of the public whose individual water use behaviors are important drivers of water sustainability outcomes. In this study, we ask: ‘‘How does social position explain variation in water perceptions and concerns between different actors in a sociohydrological system?’’ Using a mixed method approach with survey …

Strategic Planning To Advance Equity On Campus: A Case Study At Portland State University, Marisa Zapata, Stephen L. Percy, Sona K. Andrews
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Propelled by many factors, including a newly appointed Board of Trustees responsible for governance of our university, resource shortages, and enrollment swings, Portland State University embarked on a strategic planning effort in 2014 with the intent of reunifying a divided campus and creating a bold vision for moving forward in the next five years. While committed from the start to goals of diversity and inclusion, the planning process itself generated greater awareness of and commitment to equity—a bolder vision of empowerment that creates a responsibility to understand and mitigate negative, but often unintended consequences of, campus decisions and action—particularly as …

This article articulates the experience of three professors from different disciplines, teaching at three levels of University Studies, Portland State University's general education program, for whom the toggling between personal/professional critical practices and use of reflective practices in the classroom has led to transformative learning experiences for them and their students. It describes the specific reflective tools and methods they used for teaching and professional development, and considers the challenges to sustaining critical reflection and how those challenges might be addressed. The authors argue that critical reflection (CR) is an important practice for teachers and students of general education. In …

Editorial: In A World Of ‘Us’ And ‘Them’: The Case Against Intervention-Focused Research, Kiaras Gharabaghi, Ben Anderson-Nathe
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Editorial. The authors consider the manifestation of "us" and "them" narratives in research on children and youth and on intervention research in child and youth services. They say much of the research is damage-focused despite the best intentions. They mention damaged-centered research written by scholar Eve Tuck in 2009 in the "Harvard Educational Review." The authors add that intervention-based research is blind to the daily life of young people within their self-formed communities.

Adult foster homes (AFH) are small, residential settings that are licensed to provide assistance to older persons or adults with disabilities. These settings may offer a home-like setting in which residents’ independence, personal choice, and decision-making are promoted. Homes may be licensed for one to five residents and must be staffed 24-hours daily to respond to residents’ scheduled and unscheduled needs or requests. Adult foster homes offer a variety of services, including daily meals, housekeeping and laundry, assistance with personal care needs, medication administration, monitoring of health conditions, communication with residents’ health care providers, and social and recreational activities.

Librarians In The Lead: A Case For Interdisciplinary Faculty Collaboration On Assignment Design, Rachel Wishkoski, Kacy Lundstrom, Erin Davis
Communications in Information Literacy
Assignment design provides a potential niche for librarians to fill in improving research assignments and in providing opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration on teaching, but this can be difficult work to claim as librarians. In the 2016-2017 academic year, a team of three librarians at Utah State University, a mid-size research university, piloted an assignment design workshop for faculty. Based on a model developed by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), our workshop’s core component was a structured, librarian-facilitated small group discussion among three to four faculty members from a range of academic departments. Interdisciplinary conversation about teaching research …

Draining Us Dry: Scarcity Discourses In Contention Over Bottled Water Extraction, Daniel Jaffee, Robert A. Case
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Water scarcity is a highly contested concept. The dominant narratives of water scarcity in policy debates have been criticised for prioritising purely quantitative metrics and eliding questions of inequality and power. While much scholarship on water scarcity examines contexts in the global South where potable water infrastructures do not reach most residents, this article examines conflict over commercial water extraction in a Northern setting where access to potable tap water is nearly universal, yet local water supplies are increasingly constrained. It addresses three main questions: (1) How are narratives or discourses of water scarcity mobilised by a range of actors …
