Structure And Dynamics Of Household Hazardous Wastes, Douglas C. Wilson, William L. Rathje
Structure And Dynamics Of Household Hazardous Wastes, Douglas C. Wilson, William L. Rathje
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Municipal Solid wastes--the majority of which are household refuse--have, increasingly been implicated as a source of hazardous materials in landfill leachate discharges (U.S. EPA 1988). Data collected on the components of these wastes are critical for solid wastes systems planning--especially landfill design, hazardous materials collection systems, and resource recovery. A number of recent studies by the University of Arizona's Garbage Project have identified household products as a possible source of hazardous materials in landfills (Wilson 1985, Rathje et al. 1987a, 1987b). Studies have addressed (1) the definition of these "household hazardous wastes" (HHW), (2) the characteristics of HHW from hands-on …
Implementation And Database Issues Involved In Enhanced 9-1-1 Emergency Services And Rural Addressing Systems, Kenneth Dueker, George Mason, Rodney Jennings
Implementation And Database Issues Involved In Enhanced 9-1-1 Emergency Services And Rural Addressing Systems, Kenneth Dueker, George Mason, Rodney Jennings
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
The purpose of this paper is to explore the transition from the 9-1-1 single number emergency service request system to an enhanced single number system. An enhanced system is one that displays the address of the telephone which is being used to report an emergency and uses that address to identify the correct unit for dispatch. Though the technology has been available for some time now, surprisingly few enhanced systems have been fully installed. Telephone company franchise and jurisdictional boundaries rarely coincide, making it difficult to achieve cooperation in bringing together governments and competitive telephone companies. Outlined below is an …

Urban Service Delivery System And Federal Government Bureaucracy: A Structural Analysis Of Spatial Distribution Of Water Supply In A Suburban Community Of Metropolitan Lagos, Michael Udochukwu Mbanaso
Dissertations and Theses
This study identifies the prevailing scarcity of urban public services and the conceptual relations among service delivery, patronage, bureaucratic activities and structural factors in the Lagos Metropolitan region. It examines the extent to which clientelism, bureaucratic decision rules and structural theoretical models explain water service delivery patterns in Festival Town (Festac), a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria.
The unprecedented pace of growth of the Lagos Metropolis since the mid-twentieth century gave rise to the spectacular spatial expansion of the continuous built up region. Urban industrial and governmental institutions have not kept pace with the population growth rate of Lagos. This demographic …

Oregon Women In Educational Administration: Profiles And An Analysis Of Upward Career Mobility Factors, Leland D. Chapman
Dissertations and Theses
The first purpose of this study was to determine from the positive and negative factors identified by Jones and Montenegro (1982), which factors Oregon female administrators perceived had influenced upward mobility in their careers. Study of this topic reveals added information and direction to administrators of university administrative programs, school board members and school personnel administrators involved in hiring and providing training or staff development. As a result, the commonalities and differences among female school administrators in Oregon are identified. Identifying the factors that relate to upward mobility of tenured and nontenured female administrators provides insight and hopefully will promote …
Factors Affecting Persistence Of Non-Traditional Students In A Non-Traditional Baccalaureate Degree Program, Dixie Lee Lund
Factors Affecting Persistence Of Non-Traditional Students In A Non-Traditional Baccalaureate Degree Program, Dixie Lee Lund
Dissertations and Theses
Limited theoretical research exists regarding attrition of nontraditional (older, part-time, commuter) students on American college and university campuses today. Thus, when colleges or universities seek to improve programs specifically designed for such students, there is no broad research base on which to rely. The present study sought to determine if there were differences, especially ones the institution could do something about, between non-traditional students who left such a program and those who completed it. A conceptual model of non-traditional student attrition, developed by adult educators/researchers, Drs. John Bean and Barbara Metzner, provided the theoretical base for the study. Data were …

Persistence Of New Full-Time Students: A Study In A Community College, Janet Stephine Stennick
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to identify those retention-associated variables which best account for persistence and nonpersistence among new full-time students in a community college. The major research question for the study was: Within a community college, what differentiates new full-time students who leave and those who stay? Do factors identified in previous studies which helped to explain persistence and nonpersistence in four-year colleges and universities and those colleges that serve large numbers of residential students hold the same power for explaining this phenomenon in community colleges? Of the 607 new full-time students who enrolled Fall Term, 1987, 552 …

Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to understand the non home-based travel behavior of urban market traders in Onitsha, Nigeria, where 58-70% of the labor force is engaged in trading.
Relevant trip-inducing variables--gender, location, a means of personal transportation, size of stall and, type of good sold--were selected to assist in theorizing about the travel behavior of traders. Using a systematic sampling methodology, 246 stalls were selected and the MLR model was applied in data analyses.
The results show that a typical stall is occupied by either one or two traders. There are three male traders for every female trader …
Disability Rights Mandates: Federal And State Compliance With Employment Protection And Architectural Barrier Removal, Stephen Percy, United States Advisory Commission On Intergovernmental Relations
Disability Rights Mandates: Federal And State Compliance With Employment Protection And Architectural Barrier Removal, Stephen Percy, United States Advisory Commission On Intergovernmental Relations
Office of the President Publications and Presentations
The findings of this study indicate that the existence of national mandates does not necessarily eliminate the need for citizen groups to be attentive to state capitols and city halls. Ironically, one factor in the rise of regulatory federalism has been the desire of interest groups to concentrate their resources on one government, namely, the national government, rather than 50 different state governments. Yet, success in the national arena is often only partial, and sometimes only largely symbolic. It is the implementation of national rules that takes one back to states and localities.
The findings of this study also suggest …

The Formation And Expansion Of High Technology Firms In Metropolitan Areas, Oliver Ikeotuonye Orjiako
The Formation And Expansion Of High Technology Firms In Metropolitan Areas, Oliver Ikeotuonye Orjiako
Dissertations and Theses
The theme of high-technology economic base and regional development, around which this research is based, has been receiving increased attention from policy-makers and researchers in recent years. This partly reflects the reappraisal of the emerging structural changes which have been stimulated by the negative effects of the economic recessions of the past decade. It also reflects the rapid growth and expansion of high-technology firms in centers like the well-publicized Silicon Valley in California, Route 128 in Massachusetts, and the Research Triangle in North Carolina. Promoting a high-technology economic base thus has been widely adopted as a regional development policy for …

The first wave of data collection occurred within two months after the stroke. The second and third waves occurred six and twelve months, respectively, after the first interview. The caregivers were identified by the person with stroke as being the person closest to him/her who would be responsible for care after the stroke.
Data were gathered at all four interviews using reliable and valid measures for depressive …
Analytically Reduced Form Of Multicenter Integrals From Gaussian Transforms, Jack C. Straton
Analytically Reduced Form Of Multicenter Integrals From Gaussian Transforms, Jack C. Straton
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
In a previous paper the analytically reduced form was found for the general class of integrals containing multicenter products of ls hydrogenic orbitals, Coulomb or Yukawa potentials, and plane waves. The method consisted of combining all angular dependence within a single quadratic form by means of a three-dimensional Fourier transform and a one-dimensional Feynman transform for each term in the product and an additional integral transformation to move the resulting denominator into an exponential to be summed with the vector products in the plane waves. This quadratic form was then diagonalized with respect to the (introduced) momentum integrals and diagonalized …
Self-Concept Competency Of National Aeronautics And Space Administration Research And Development Managers, Mark A. Beymer
Self-Concept Competency Of National Aeronautics And Space Administration Research And Development Managers, Mark A. Beymer
Dissertations and Theses
Boyatzis has stated that "true" management competencies are characteristics of a manager which differentiate superior from average and below average performance. Boyatzis, however, treats a manager's self-image (self-concept) as a "threshold" rather than a "real" competency. Lafferty's research, which has measured relationships between several lifestyle (self-concept) variables and corresponding organizational behavior, has found that performance differences between average and high performing managers are associated with differences in self-concept construction. The researcher proposes to treat variations in self-concept measurements from managers as indications of their relative management competency. Thisresearch investigates seventeen hypotheses relating to the self-concepts of high performing, mid-level technical …
Charles A. Broadwater And The Main Chance In Montana, William L. Lang
Charles A. Broadwater And The Main Chance In Montana, William L. Lang
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
Charles A. Broadwater (1840-92), a Montana pioneer, exemplified many of the characteristics embodied in the myth of the self-made man. With no trade or special skills Broadwater migrated to the Deer Lodge Valley in 1862. He traded horses, homes, and cattle. As the gold boom spread, he entered the freighting business and soon became immersed in the commercial and political life of the territory. He married into a leading Helena family and, through connections with such eastern capitalists as James J. Hill, built a business empire. He did not seek elective office, but he was a power in the territorial …

Southeast Portland Comprehensive Housing Plan: Background Report, Portland State University. College Of Urban And Public Affairs
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
The preliminary data collection and analysis of housing issues in Southeast Portland (S.E.) occurred during the Fall Quarter of 1988. General issues relating to housing stock were identified through group methods. These issues were broken into two broad areas--housing stock issues and socio-economic concerns. The critical linkages between the issues were developed through research, interviews, and input from S.E. Coalitions (Inner and outer Southeast Portland, and the Land Use Committee).
In order to provide for a quantitative framework for the purposes of analysis, 1980 census data, Metro's "Regional Pactbook" and the City of Portland's "Neighborhood Profiles" were used as source …
