Survival In The City Streets: An Autoethnographic Analysis Challenging The Criminalization Of Urban Street Gangs, Robert Northman
Survival In The City Streets: An Autoethnographic Analysis Challenging The Criminalization Of Urban Street Gangs, Robert Northman
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
To varying outcomes, many attempts have been made to understand and define urban street gangs. Though these understandings and definitions of gangs may vary, they almost always rely on criminality as at least one of the gang’s “purposes.” The author, a gang member for approximately thirty years seeks to contribute lived experiences to the conversation centered on gangs. This auto-ethnographic analysis of urban street gang culture seeks to highlight the author’s experiences as potential determinants of gang membership while also exacting the realities of some common myths and other misconceptions surrounding the urban street gang, including the criminalization thereof. The …

Multnomah County 2000-2016 Forest Carbon Inventory & Trends. Strategies For Maintaining & Increasing Carbon Storage On County Forestlands To Meet Regional Climate Goals, Anthony Z. Holmes
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
In attempting to meet the aims of the 2015 Climate Action Plan to reduce countywide CO2 emissions by 40% over 1990 levels by 2030 and 80% by 2050, Multnomah County has sought to better understand the role county forest lands play in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, by conducting a forest carbon inventory and projection of carbon flux under a "business as usual" scenario for aboveground biomass. This report relies on two estimates for the 5 forest carbon pools recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), these include estimates published as part of the Oregon Forest Ecosystem Carbon Inventory …

The purpose of this study is to develop a more in depth understanding of the contexts, motivations, and circumstances that impacted the development and implementation of county-specific JRI programing in the state of Oregon. We place a particular emphasis on understanding the factors related to the use of downward departures and variation in approaches. In addition, the study also uncovered broader JRI themes and challenges that impact overall program development, implementation, and future longevity/stability. The report contains 5 sections: 1- Broad Themes Related to County JRI Development and Implementation, 2 -Historic and Contemporary Challenges, 3 - Downward Departure Programs, 4 …

Network Effects Of Disruptive Traffic Events, Juan Medina, Xiaoyue Cathy Liu
Network Effects Of Disruptive Traffic Events, Juan Medina, Xiaoyue Cathy Liu
TREC Final Reports
Current traffic management strategies are based on expected conditions caused by recurring congestion (e.g., by time of day, day of week), and can be very effective when provisions are also given for reasonable variations from such expectations. However, traffic variations due to non-recurrent events (e.g., crashes) can be much larger and difficult to predict, making also challenging efforts to identify, measure, and forecast their disruptive effects. This project explores a proactive approach to deploy a tool for managing non-recurrent congestion by identifying and quantifying the effects of disruptive traffic events at a microscopic level using a comprehensive set of data …

After the attacks on 9/11, Muslims in the United States were the targets of increased surveillance by law enforcement on the basis of their religious identity, often resulting in mistreatment and unjustified imprisonment. The current study examined ideologies that are associated with Islamophobia and support for police surveillance of Muslims, as well as specific types of intergroup threat perceptions that mediate these relationships. Participants (N = 603) completed a survey measuring Social Dominance Orientation (SDO), Right-wing Authoritarianism (RWA), Nationalism, intergroup threat perceptions, Islamophobia, and support for an anti-Muslim police surveillance policy. Results demonstrated that higher levels of SDO, RWA, and …

Gender Differences In Parental Leave Before And After The Introduction Of A Paid Parental Leave Policy: A Sequence Analysis Of Administrative Time-Keeping Records, Julia M. Goodman, Lisset Dumet Poma, David Hurtado, Anna Steeves-Reece, Dawn M. Richardson
Richardson
OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Paid leave confers health benefits to new parents and their children, but the absence of a national paid family leave policy in the United States has left workers to navigate a patchwork of paid and unpaid parental leave benefits accessed through their employers. As public and private paid leave policies expand across the US, it is imperative to determine how these benefits impact leave taking behaviors among new parents. We use sequence and cluster analyses of administrative time-keeping records to detail parental leave-taking during the first 180 days after adding a child among employees of a large public-sector organization with …

Policing By Proxy: Interrogating Big Tech's Role In Law Enforcement, Claire Elizabeth
Policing By Proxy: Interrogating Big Tech's Role In Law Enforcement, Claire Elizabeth
University Honors Theses
Predictive policing, sometimes referred to as data-driven or actuarial policing, is a method of policing that uses a risk-based approach to law enforcement. For-profit technology companies market proprietary risk assessment algorithms to law enforcement organizations as tools meant to proactively mitigate crime. Using data collected from a vast array of sources, both personal and public, police are able to "predict" the likelihood of criminal activity in a given area using these algorithms. Proponents claim that risk assessment tools have the potential to fight crime with unbiased accuracy and speed by predicting when, where, and whom to police by relying on …
Gender Inequality And The Division Of Labor In The Home During Covid-19: A Literature Review, Ella F. Jackson
Gender Inequality And The Division Of Labor In The Home During Covid-19: A Literature Review, Ella F. Jackson
University Honors Theses
The current Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted families in the United States as working parents face increased demand for domestic labor at home while losing community and institutional support through pandemic closures. By integrating emerging research on gender norms and expectations regarding the division of household labor for working parents, the impact of Covid-19 on working mothers, and the gendered impact of infrastructure and the pandemic response in the United States, I aim to provide a holistic conceptualization and analysis of gender inequality and the division of labor in the home during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through summarizing and analyzing current …
Examining Probation Lengths In Philadelphia, Pa, Madeline Grace Davis
Examining Probation Lengths In Philadelphia, Pa, Madeline Grace Davis
Dissertations and Theses
One out of every 22 adults in Philadelphia, PA is under community supervision which is more than double the national average (Schiraldi, 2018). Even though probation has been seen as a more lenient alternative to prison it actually serves as a net-widener (Phelps, 2020). Probation can result in increased punishments for low-level offenses when failure to meet probation conditions results in jail or prison time when there was never a possibility of long-term incarceration at the time of sentencing (Phelps, 2020). This study uses public court information data from Philadelphia to analyze the effects different dosages of probation have on …

"I'M Very Enlightened:" Assisting Black Males Involved In The Criminal Justice System To Deal With And Heal From Racism, Darnell Jackie Strong
Dissertations and Theses
Black Males who have offended face major challenges stemming from their involvement in the Criminal Justice System. Once involved it is hard to get out, as exhibited by high recidivism rates and mass incarceration, issues that have plagued Black Males since slavery. There is little research on interventions to ameliorate the effects of racism on this population.
The aim of this research was to: a) create a training to help Black Males who have been involved in the Criminal Justice System deal with racism and b) evaluate the intervention. This mixed methods research utilized Constructivist Grounded Theory and Afrocentric theory …

Testing The Ls/Cmi For Predictive Accuracy: Does Age Matter?, Sandra Stephanie Lawlor
Testing The Ls/Cmi For Predictive Accuracy: Does Age Matter?, Sandra Stephanie Lawlor
Dissertations and Theses
The Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (LS/CMI) is one of the most widely used instruments for assessing recidivism risk and treatment needs in correctional settings. The predictive validity of the measure and its predecessor (LSI-R) has been established in meta-analytic studies and research finds that the scale's accuracy is largely independent of sex, race, and ethnicity. Whether the LS/CMI works equally well for different age groups remains in question. The current study assessed the predictive accuracy of the LS/CMI from a sample of 14,940 adults in custody (AIC) released from an Oregon prison between 2011 and 2017 for three age …
Toward A Restorative Math Pedagogy: A Theoretical Overlay Between Two Relational Approaches To Schooling And Mathematics Instruction, Shanté Stuart Mcqueen
Toward A Restorative Math Pedagogy: A Theoretical Overlay Between Two Relational Approaches To Schooling And Mathematics Instruction, Shanté Stuart Mcqueen
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
Emphasized by the fallout of the pandemic, critical math scholars have long-since called for resistance to the cultural marginalization, systemic racism and violence of math instruction by crafting a liberatory and humanizing mathematics education. In response to that call, this paper illuminates the theoretical connections between the frameworks of two relational approaches to schooling, Restorative Justice in Education (RJE) and Cognitively Guided Instruction in Mathematics (CGI). Through discussing the intersections of the components of both frameworks and their shared vision of equity and agency for all students, this paper argues that integrating restorative justice into math instruction is not only …
The Rise Of Neo-Fascist Populism And Islamophobia In The West, Mohamed Tawfiq Said Tabib
The Rise Of Neo-Fascist Populism And Islamophobia In The West, Mohamed Tawfiq Said Tabib
Dissertations and Theses
Trumpism can be defined as racist right-wing neo-fascist populism and nativism combined with a cult of personality. There is very little distinction between neo-fascists, the alt-right, and far-right groups. All can be identified by their socio-political philosophy and vehement beliefs of racial supremacy, ultranationalism, populism, xenophobia, nativism, and anti-immigrant sentiment, as well as being opposed to liberal Western democracy and its values. This thesis explores why there has been a popular international resurgence of far-right neo-fascist movements throughout the European Union and the United States and examines the impact on inter-group social and political relations with those of different racial …
