Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

For the past several years the high attrition rate at Mirror Lake Tomlinson Adult Center (MLT) has been of tremendous concern to the teaching staff and administrators. It is suspected Chat there are several major factors pertaining to curriculum that contribute to this dropout, problem. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to secure certain data relative to former MLT persisters and non-persisters, so that recommendations regarding curriculum and program changes could be made that might lead to a decrease in the attrition rate.

Persisters, in the attrition study, are those students who completed their program or graduated from MLT. …

An Analysis Of Socio-Psychological Factors Affecting Marine Corps Recruit Training Attrition, Howard J. Christenson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The ability of the Department of Defense to recruit and retain adequate members in the All Volunteer Force constitutes a significant political, economic, and social issue. As the economy improves, recruitment and retention of enlisted personnel challenge military planners. High attrition rates of the past indicate that the full potential of recruits is not being achieved.

Each year, over 40,000 youth enlist in the United States Marine Corps. Of this number, approximately 88 percent successfully meet the demands of recruit training and graduate from one of two Marine Corps Recruit Training Depots located at San Diego, California and Parris Island, …

The Causes Of Student Absenteeism In Community College Classes, Lynn E. Mccutcheon Aug 1986

The Causes Of Student Absenteeism In Community College Classes, Lynn E. Mccutcheon

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

One of the biggest problems facing professors in the Social Science Division at the Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) is poor classroom attendance on the part of some student. When students miss classes they often miss important announcements that impact directly on their grades, as well as learning experiences that are obviously grade-related. Furthermore, the cumulative effect of a combination of missed classes and low grades caused by absenteeism contributes to dropping out of college. One purpose of this MARP was to determine the causes and measure the relative contribution of each cause to the problem of …

Improving Auditory Sequencing Skills In The Kindergarten Age Child Through The Increased Instruction Of Music, Millicent Hume Brandt

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The writer applied an increased frequency of general music instruction given to a target group of kindergarten children in order to measure its impact on auditory memory sequencing skills. A control group received the general music instruction on a less frequent basis. The writer, a music teacher specialist, theorized that skills learned in the music class setting would transfer to other (academic) classroom settings, as measured by a standardized testing instrument and a classroom teacher survey checklist.

The writer designed a method of instruction using music classroom materials selected to include sequencing and auditory memory skills. The target group received …

Strategies For Socialization Of Learning Disabled Students At The Secondary Level, Verden T. Smith

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Learning disabled students at the secondary level have inferior socialization skills with peer groups and poor self-perceptual skills. Studies indicate that socialization appears to be the keystone of adolescent development. Evaluative instruments employed to discern interpersonal and socialization skills were the IPAT-Anxiety Scale Questionnaire Test-Self-Analysis Form (Cattell, Krug, Scheier) and the Self-Inventory (Simon-Howe-Kirschenbaum). Peer Counseling, observations, filmstrips and guest speakers were utilized to implement this socialization. skills program. Results indicated improved self-esteem, increased communication with peer groups and more positive attitudes toward self and others. (Appendices include sample instruments and student data.)
