Using The Deaf Community As An Alternative Treatment Strategy: Developing Deaf Treatment Foster Homes, Stephen H. Hamerdinger, Daniel Murphy Oct 2019

Using The Deaf Community As An Alternative Treatment Strategy: Developing Deaf Treatment Foster Homes, Stephen H. Hamerdinger, Daniel Murphy

JADARA

There are few treatment programs for deaf children who have severe emotional or behavioral disturbances. Most programs are residential in nature. While these programs provide a much needed service, they are not available to every child that needs treatment. Further, many children do better in smaller, family oriented environments than they do in residential treatment programs. Therapeutic foster care approaches are increasingly being used in many places as an alternative to residential treatment for hearing children.

Until recently, such programs have not been greatly utilized as an alternative to treatment for deaf children. When deaf children are placed in such …

When Deaf Parents Adopt Deaf Children: An Investigation Of The Concept Of Adoptive Parent Entitlement In Deaf Adopted Families, Barbara J. White Oct 2019

When Deaf Parents Adopt Deaf Children: An Investigation Of The Concept Of Adoptive Parent Entitlement In Deaf Adopted Families, Barbara J. White

JADARA

The literature on Deaf people as parents in the past two decades is presented from both a culturally affirmative and a medical/pathological perspective (Jones, 1995; Lane, 1992, 1993; Meadow-Orlans, 1997; Spencer, Bodner-Johnson & Gutfreund, 1992), with the latter being more prevalent. It is rare to find an article that portrays Deaf people as highly competent and successful parents. It is even rarer to find an article that shows positive outcomes when Deaf parents adopt children (Shettle, 1997; White, 1997). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of adoptive parenthood from the viewpoint of seven Deaf mothers …

Results indicate that both approaches do work with deaf clients, depending on language proficiency in either English or ASL. Exploration of computerized technology is warranted.

Assessment Of Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Persons: A Strengths Based Transactional Deafness Paradigm, Martha Sheridan Oct 2019

Assessment Of Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Persons: A Strengths Based Transactional Deafness Paradigm, Martha Sheridan

JADARA

This article discusses the existence of a cultural and professional obsession with pathology which has jaded mental health assessments of consumers. The importance of incorporating ecological and strengths perspectives into the assessment process is discussed. It is suggested that individual and environmental strengths need to be taken into consideration for a more positive, respectful and empowering shift in assessment paradigms to occur. Deaf knowledgeable mental health professionals have an ethical obligation to consider the strengths and meanings of various d/Deaf, hard-of-hearing and late deafened realities as well as the individual's ancestral, cultural, spiritual and gender realities. A strengths based transactional …

Preferences Of Deaf College Students For The Hearing Status Of Their Children, Margery S. Miller, Donald F. Moores, Deborah Sicoli

JADARA

The anticipated results of genetic research and the implications for genetic engineering have the potential to reduce the incidence of conditions such as cancer, but questions have been raised about the ethics of proceeding to conditions such as blindness, deafness or color-blindness. One area that has not been addressed is the preferences of deaf individuals for the hearing status of their children. The present study investigated the preference of deaf college students for the hearing status of children they might have in the future. The results indicated that the majority of respondents expressed no preference for hearing status of children. …

An Attributional Analysis Of Aggression Among Children Who Are Deaf, Tamera Burton Murdock, Ronald L. Lybarger Oct 2019

An Attributional Analysis Of Aggression Among Children Who Are Deaf, Tamera Burton Murdock, Ronald L. Lybarger

JADARA

This exploratory study applied attribution theory to explain aggressive behaviors using a sample of thirty children who are deaf, ages 9-12. Students were shown four hypothetical scenarios of a child causing another child minor harm, such as bumping into him or her in the hall. The intention of the provocateur was ambiguous. Participants were instructed to pretend they were the child who had been harmed. Subsequently, they were questioned about the provocateur's intentions, their own emotional responses, and their likely behavioral response. Consistent with our predictions, many children demonstrated hostile (i.e., hostile) attributional biases. Moreover, the results support the cognition, …

Evaluating Alcohol And Other Drug Use Problems With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Persons, Debra Guthmann, Kathy Sandberg Oct 2019

Evaluating Alcohol And Other Drug Use Problems With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Persons, Debra Guthmann, Kathy Sandberg

JADARA

Professionals who provide services to Deaf and hard of hearing individuals may encounter situations that could be related to the person's use of alcohol and/or other drugs. Accessing an agency that can provide an appropriate chemical dependency assessment for a Deaf or hard of hearing person is difficult since there are no formalized assessment tools normed or specifically designed to use with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Additionally, most assessors are unfamiliar with how to work with Deaf and hard of hearing people, less likely to be fluent in American Sign Language and unaware of appropriate treatment options. The …

Attention Advisors And Mentors: A Suggested Study Technique For Deaf College Students, Robert B. Gonzales Oct 2019

Attention Advisors And Mentors: A Suggested Study Technique For Deaf College Students, Robert B. Gonzales

JADARA

Deaf college students can develop a programmed study method that has been used successfully with college students for over twenty-five years. This study method will improve students grades if they will dedicate themselves to this technique rather than waiting until the lastminute to cram. Deaf students can continually review the knowledge base of lecture and textbook information by studying independently and especially by using an instructor or peer mentor. Students need to establish appropriate time management for studying and writing term papers. Deaf students must develop assertiveness in the college classroom when the lecture presentations are not clear. Successful deaf …

The Complete Mitochondrial Genome Of An Atlantic Ocean Shortfin Mako Shark, Isurus Oxyrinchus, Jonathan Gorman, Nicholas J. Marra, Mahmood S. Shivji, Bryce J. Stanhope

Biology Faculty Articles

We report the first complete mitochondrial genome of a shortfin mako shark from the Atlantic Ocean. The genome had 16,700 base pairs and contained 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and a non-coding D-loop. There were 81 individual differences compared to the published mitochondrial genome of a shortfin mako from the Pacific Ocean, with most variability found in protein coding genes, especially ND5, ND3, and ND1. These highly variable genes may be useful population markers in future studies, and availability of a second mitogenome will assist with future, genome-scale studies of this IUCN Endangered species.

Culturally Affirmative Counseling With American Indians Who Are Deaf, Nancy M. Eldredge Oct 2019

Culturally Affirmative Counseling With American Indians Who Are Deaf, Nancy M. Eldredge

JADARA

American Indians who are deaf may exhibit a complex mix of cultural characteristics common to Indian, Deaf, and hearing Anglo society. The pressures of living with multicultural identities and the conflicts of competing cultural influences can exacerbate the difficulty of dealing with personal stress. Counselors without training in cross-cultural interventions may be unaware of important cultural differences affecting the counseling relationship, particularly the elements of cultural identity that tend to be shared by Deaf and Indian people. This paper explores the comparative cultural values of Deaf people, Indian groups, and the hearing Anglo society. The goal is to identify potential …

Does She Want You To Open The Door? New Realities For Traditional Gendered Sexuality, Angela Towne, Elliot Ruggles, Betsy Crane, Meghan Root

The Qualitative Report

In contemporary United States culture, young people may face contradictory gender-related pressures. Changing gender norms resulting from social movements in the latter half of the twentieth century (e.g., sexual revolution, feminism) collide with traditional expectations, such as female virginity until marriage. This study used cross-gender focus groups to examine young people’s gendered experiences in the wake of social change. Data were collected with 35 millennials (ages 18-27) in Pennsylvania who self-identified as having traditional views about relationships and sexuality. Participants articulated current traditional expectations, which included educational and career responsibilities for women as well as behavioral expectations that participants associated …

Gut Microbiome Diversity Is Associated With Sleep Physiology In Humans, Robert Smith, Cole Easson, Sarah M. Lyle, Ritishka Kapoor, Chase P. Donnelly, Eileen Davidson, Esha Parikh, Jose Lopez, Jaime L. Tartar

Biology Faculty Articles

The human gut microbiome can influence health through the brain-gut-microbiome axis. Growing evidence suggests that the gut microbiome can influence sleep quality. Previous studies that have examined sleep deprivation and the human gut microbiome have yielded conflicting results. A recent study found that sleep deprivation leads to changes in gut microbiome composition while a different study found that sleep deprivation does not lead to changes in gut microbiome. Accordingly, the relationship between sleep physiology and the gut microbiome remains unclear. To address this uncertainty, we used actigraphy to quantify sleep measures coupled with gut microbiome sampling to determine how the …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The success of reef-building corals for >200 million years has been dependent on the mutualistic interaction between the coral host and its photosynthetic endosymbiont dinoflagellates (family Symbiodiniaceae) that supply the coral host with nutrients and energy for growth and calcification. While multiple light scattering in coral tissue and skeleton significantly enhance the light microenvironment for Symbiodiniaceae, the mechanisms of light propagation in tissue and skeleton remain largely unknown due to a lack of technologies to measure the intrinsic optical properties of both compartments in live corals. Here we introduce ISOCT (inverse spectroscopic optical coherence tomography), a non-invasive approach to measure …
