Teaching Qualitative Research Methods Online: A Scoping Review Of The Literature, Chareen Snelson Nov 2019

Teaching Qualitative Research Methods Online: A Scoping Review Of The Literature, Chareen Snelson

The Qualitative Report

Online education has become well established as an avenue for flexible access to educational opportunities. Those who teach qualitative research methods online may find it difficult to locate research or best practice literature to inform practice. A scoping review was conducted to identify and synthesize the literature about teaching qualitative research methods courses online. Eleven peer-reviewed journal articles were identified through a scoping review of the literature. The TPACK framework, which defines teacher knowledge in terms of technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge, was used as a conceptual framework. Results from this scoping review indicate that online qualitative research methods educators …

Childhood Trauma: Considering Diagnostic And Culturally Sensitive Treatment Approaches For Deaf Clients, Tomina Schwenke Nov 2019

Childhood Trauma: Considering Diagnostic And Culturally Sensitive Treatment Approaches For Deaf Clients, Tomina Schwenke

JADARA

As the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR, 1994) is under revision, the complexity of diagnosing and treating childhood trauma with the current trauma-related diagnoses, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Acute Stress Disorder (ASD)is being debated (van der Kolk,2 005). Regarding deaf individuals, significant differences in symptom presentation (e.g., avoidance/numbing, hyperarousal, and re-experiencing symptoms) suggest that caution is needed when using the current criterion for the diagnosis of PTSD within this population (Schild & Dalenberg, 2011). Despite diagnostic uncertainties, it is generally accepted that regardless of hearing status, early childhood is a critical period for the development …

Signing While Driving: An Investigation Of Divided Attention Resources Among Deaf Drivers, Jason J. Zodda, Shawn S. Nelson Schmitt, Anna E. Crisologo, Rachael Plotkin, Michael Yates, Gregory A. Witkin, Wyatte C. Hall Nov 2019

Signing While Driving: An Investigation Of Divided Attention Resources Among Deaf Drivers, Jason J. Zodda, Shawn S. Nelson Schmitt, Anna E. Crisologo, Rachael Plotkin, Michael Yates, Gregory A. Witkin, Wyatte C. Hall

JADARA

Safely operating vehicles require significant visual attention. While attention can be divided, cognitive resources are not limitless. Deaf and hearing participants engaged in a simulated driving task while simultaneously engaging in a conversation in their preferred language. Results indicated that hearing drivers may have a performance advantage over deaf drivers, though it is so minor that it will not likely be seen outside of the laboratory setting. The results also indicated differing cognitive processing among hearing and deaf drivers. The results may inform policy, reduce stigma, and serve as the base for future research on deaf-specific cognitive factors of driving.

The Bioethics Of Providing Cochlear Implants To Children: Informed Choices And Autonomous Decision-Making, Katherine Mascia, John Mascia Nov 2019

The Bioethics Of Providing Cochlear Implants To Children: Informed Choices And Autonomous Decision-Making, Katherine Mascia, John Mascia

JADARA

The significant advances in technology and educational options for children who are deaf present a parent with opportunities to make choices on behalf of their child. The variability in overall results for all available options and the long-term implications of decisions made early in a child's life make it necessary for parents to utilize an objective process. A framework for ensuring the parent's right to make decisions on behalf of their child will be discussed using five principles of bioethics. Points of controversy regarding the use of cochlear implants as well as the use of American Sign Language (ASL) will …

Inferred Function And Dynamics Of Microbial Communities From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Deepesh Tourani Nov 2019

Inferred Function And Dynamics Of Microbial Communities From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Deepesh Tourani

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Microbial communities, or microbiomes, are the major drivers of global biogeochemical cycles, acting as primary producers and decomposers across the water column in the oceans. Thus, they reflect changes in physicochemical properties and nutrient composition of the ocean. However, this correlation between ecological changes and the function of marine microbiomes is poorly understood. Large-scale oceanic events such as the bottom-water oxygen-depleted zone (i.e., “dead zone”) and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) render the ecosystem fragile. These events decrease survival rates of pelagic and coastal macrofauna and affect the biodiversity of the region. As part …

Anxiety Symptoms And Sleep Disturbance In Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: The Impact Of Receiving And Training A Service Dog, Diane Scotland-Coogan Nov 2019

Anxiety Symptoms And Sleep Disturbance In Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: The Impact Of Receiving And Training A Service Dog, Diane Scotland-Coogan

The Qualitative Report

The impact of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on our combat veterans and their families is extensive. Symptoms of anxiety and the effects of sleep disturbance have a negative impact on daily functioning (Wright et al., 2011). The presence of a dog has demonstrated a reduction in anxiety symptoms, which may have a positive influence on improved sleep (Shearer, Hunt, Chowdhury, & Nicol, 2016). The Veterans Administration (VA) has been using canines to assist combat veterans in reintegrating into civilian life, and most currently, as a part of psychological therapy (Rubenstein, 2012). This research examined the impact on combat veterans with …

Learning Together To Heal: Toward An Integrated Practice Of Transpersonal Psychology, Experiential Learning, And Neuroscience For Collective Healing, Tatsushi Arai, Jean Bosco Niyonzima Nov 2019

Learning Together To Heal: Toward An Integrated Practice Of Transpersonal Psychology, Experiential Learning, And Neuroscience For Collective Healing, Tatsushi Arai, Jean Bosco Niyonzima

Peace and Conflict Studies

This essay brings together complementary insights from transpersonal psychology, experiential learning, and neuroscience to develop an integrated framework of psychosocial healing in societies affected by conflict and trauma. While transpersonal psychology examines the spiritual and transcendental aspects of psychosocial wellbeing, research on experiential learning examines how people learn from direct experience. Recognizing that both are useful for psychosocial healing, the first part of the essay explores how the two sets of activities can complement each other. Of particular interest is the role of transpersonal exercises such as yoga and meditation, as well as the purposeful use of experiential learning techniques …

Bovidae, the largest family in Pecora infraorder, are characterized by a striking variability in diploid number of chromosomes between species and among individuals within a species. The bovid X chromosome is also remarkably variable, with several morphological types in the family. Here we built a detailed chromosome map of musk ox (Ovibos moschatus), a relic species originating from Pleistocene megafauna, with dromedary and human probes using chromosome painting. We trace chromosomal rearrangements during Bovidae evolution by comparing species already studied by chromosome painting. The musk ox karyotype differs from the ancestral pecoran karyotype by six fusions, one fission, …

Effecting Epiphanous Change In Teacher Practice: A Teacher’S Autoethnography, Karen D. Barley Ms, Jane Southcott

The Qualitative Report

This study comprises of a series of autoethnographic vignettes stemming from Karen’s life experiences that provide a snapshot of her quest for equality and fairness in her personal life, as well as her professional life as a primary school and special education educator. Karen later became a teacher of teachers, keen to share what she had learned with her peers. It was when she began educating other teachers that she became even more self-reflective with the most poignant question being, what causes one to change their beliefs, attitude, or way of thinking? The included vignettes encapsulate significant stories, starting from …

English Language Literacy Development In Deaf Individuals: The Role Of Environmental Factors, Brooke Harding, Mark W. Tanner

JADARA

Learning to read and write plays a significant role in children's linguistic and cognitive development. However, prelingually deaf children born into hearing families face immense linguistic, social, and emotional obstacles in the acquisition of reading and writing skills (Swisher,1989). This research was carried out to gain first hand information on the nature of literacy acquisition by deaf individuals. A case study approach was employed in order to investigate factors contributing to two prelingually deaf adults' acquisition of literacy in English. Findings from this study showed the significance of the home and school settings as learning environments which either enhanced or …

Antibiotics Overuse And Bacterial Resistance, Mir Saleem, Brett Deters, Adam De La Bastide, Martha Korzen Oct 2019

Antibiotics Overuse And Bacterial Resistance, Mir Saleem, Brett Deters, Adam De La Bastide, Martha Korzen

Biology Faculty Articles

Antibiotic usage has become very widespread, as they are used to treat so many infectious diseases today. Antimicrobial agents exert their actions via different mechanisms including blockage of cell wall synthesis, interference of protein and/or nucleic acid synthesis, interruption of cell membrane structure, and inhibition of a metabolic pathway. The treatment of bacterial infections with antimicrobial agents has become more difficult due to the capability of bacteria to develop resistance to antibiotics. Erroneous diagnosing, misconceptions, and improper physician-patient dynamics have led to overuse of antibiotics and the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Bacterial colonies have been shown to confer advantageous genetic …

Staff Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia

The Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Oceanographic Campus Library has always had a unique challenge in that it is the final clearing house for student capstone, thesis, and dissertation binding and publication. The library has traditionally been the host of the final print publication and the liaison between the student, the program office, and the bindery. With the launch of NSUWorks, NSU’s institutional repository, 6 years ago, the library envisioned developing an innovative and effective start to finish workflow for student Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) and worked to change the physical life cycle of NSU’s theses and dissertations into a …

Models Of Alcohol And Other Drug Treatment For Consideration When Working With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Individuals, Debra Guthmann

JADARA

There are numerous models and approaches used to treat chemical dependency. The majority of these programs are used with hearing people, and there is a lack of experience in the use of these models within the deaf and hard of hearing community. This article will focus on the Twelve Step model, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Model and the Bio-Psycho- Social Model (Social Program Model). A discussion and comparison with the harm reduction model will also be discussed.
