Host Population Genetics And Biogeography Structure The Microbiome Of The Sponge Cliona Delitrix, Cole Easson, Andia Chaves-Fonnegra, Robert W. Thacker, Jose Lopez
Biology Faculty Articles
Sponges occur across diverse marine biomes and host internal microbial communities that can provide critical ecological functions. While strong patterns of host specificity have been observed consistently in sponge microbiomes, the precise ecological relationships between hosts and their symbiotic microbial communities remain to be fully delineated. In the current study, we investigate the relative roles of host population genetics and biogeography in structuring the microbial communities hosted by the excavating sponge Cliona delitrix. A total of 53 samples, previously used to demarcate the population genetic structure of C. delitrix, were selected from two locations in the Caribbean Sea and …

Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
School transitions can be challenging for students, especially when students enter junior high school. Junior high school students experience significant developmental growth in the areas of autonomy, relationships, acceptance, cognitive skills, as well as physical differences associated with hormonal changes. When a student transitions into junior high school, evidence indicates possible declines in motivation, school interest, and academic achievement. Personal relationships, self-worth, and coping skills are essential for a successful transition between schools. Adolescents engage in the occupations of education, leisure, social participation, and activities of daily living. Occupational therapy is perfectly positioned as a support service within the school …
The Effect Of Dental Probiotic Use On The Inhibition Of Streptococcus Mutans: A Clinical Study, Halah Thanoon
The Effect Of Dental Probiotic Use On The Inhibition Of Streptococcus Mutans: A Clinical Study, Halah Thanoon
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Brief Background: Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) is the pioneering pathogenic bacteria responsible for the initiation of dental caries. Controlling S.mutans activity using dental probiotics may have an impact on caries incidence and oral health in general. Objective: To evaluate the effects of commercially available dental probiotics (PRO-Dental, Hyperbiotics Inc.) usage for 60 days in a row on the cariogenic bacterium S.mutans in high caries risk patients with high or low S.mutans counts at baseline and 30 days after the discontinuation of use. Methodology: A total of 30 consenting adult patients with high caries risk (according to NSU CAMBRA protocol) without any …

Reflection And Covid-19: How Students And A Professor Made The Best Of Remote Education In A Service-Learning Capstone Course, Pamela D. Hall
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
This paper will provide a critical reflection of a professor’s response to the Pandemic of 2020 and its impact on her service-learning course. The paper will discuss the changes that were made by the professor once the course format changed to remote education. Throughout, comments and reflections from the students as it applies to the assignments they had to complete remotely will be provided, challenges that both the professor and students overcame will be discussed followed by a description of takeaways that were gain from this experience. The paper will end with a message of hope for college professors who …
Neurophysiological Effects Of Dry Needling To The Thoracolumbar Junction Multifidi In Subjects With Low Back Pain And Decreased Hamstring Length, Nicole Ginette Clark
Neurophysiological Effects Of Dry Needling To The Thoracolumbar Junction Multifidi In Subjects With Low Back Pain And Decreased Hamstring Length, Nicole Ginette Clark
Department of Physical Therapy Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background and Purpose: Dry needling is becoming increasingly popular in the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. The neurophysiological effect of treatment, specifically those related to the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is considered a relevant physiological mechanism contributing to a patient’s rehabilitation. The primary purpose of this study was toinvestigate the neurophysiological effects of dry needling, as measured by sympathetic outflow and muscular flexibility. A secondary purpose of this study was to determine if changes in SNS activity correlate with clinically meaningful improvements in pain and disability. Design: This was a prospective, double-blind randomized clinical trial. Subjects: The study sample consisted of …

Identifying Attitudes And Knowledge Deficits Regarding Constipation In The Neurosurgical Patient: A Quality Improvement Project, Denise Trestyn Diaz
Identifying Attitudes And Knowledge Deficits Regarding Constipation In The Neurosurgical Patient: A Quality Improvement Project, Denise Trestyn Diaz
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: Constipation is a common problem in hospitalized patients worldwide. The providers’ lack of knowledge of the complications that can occur from constipation lead to increased discomfort and increased healthcare costs. Purpose: The purpose of this evidence-based practice education intervention was to improve neurosurgical health providers’ knowledge and attitudes on constipation prevention in neurosurgical patients. Theoretical Framework: Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory was used to guide this project. Methods: A pre- and post-test survey design guided this project. The physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses completed a pre-test and post-test survey on prevention of constipation in the neurosurgical patient before and after the …

Exploring Healthcare Services Utilization And Medication Adherence Of The Arab Descent Americans In South Florida, Haifa Abdulrahman Fadil
Exploring Healthcare Services Utilization And Medication Adherence Of The Arab Descent Americans In South Florida, Haifa Abdulrahman Fadil
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Research into health outcomes of Arab-descent Americans (ADAs) is sparse. ADAs identify as “White,” instead of in a separate census category, contributing to their underrepresentation in the census and the limited amount of research on their health outcomes. In the current U.S. sociopolitical climate, better understandings are needed of the impact of discrimination and Arabic culture, including level of health literacy, on ADAs’ general health and health outcomes. This study employed mixed methods to explore the impact of health literacy level and perceived discrimination on HSU and medication adherence for ADAs in South Florida. In its qualitative phase, a convenience …
Occupational Therapy’S Needs Assessment For Service Navigation For Children With Autism, Kristina Lauren Paula
Occupational Therapy’S Needs Assessment For Service Navigation For Children With Autism, Kristina Lauren Paula
Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background. This capstone project brings to our attention the importance of occupational therapy’s role in meeting the continued needs of children with autism. As the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) continues to increase, so does the disparity in the accessibility of services for children and their families. Therefore, it is imperative to facilitate a diagnostic process and identify the child’s specific needs, to implement early intervention strategies. The medical model of disability, an internationally recognized approach in diagnosing children withautism, views autism as a problem that individually belongs to the child. Although the current medical model is preferred by …
