Improving Spelling Performance Of Sixth Grade Students Using Eclectic Spelling Strategies And A Cognitive-Based Approach, Marilyn L. Frieling

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The poor spelling performance of a group of sixth graders was addressed by utilizing the Informal Spelling Inventory suggested by Mann and Suiter (1974). This criterion – referenced test determined that nine members of the sixth grade class scored well below grade level expectations in spelling. A cognitive – based approach and eclectic spelling strategies were implemented with the target group in order to improve their spelling achievement. The results indicated a cognitive-based approach through phonetic instruction and rule generalizations increased levels of achievement in the target group. Students within the group demonstrated positive attitudinal changes. Purposeful writing became one …

Growth Rate Of Stony Corals Of Broward County, Florida: Effects From Past Beach Renourishment Projects, Richard E. Dodge, Broward County Erosion Prevention District Environmental Quality Control Board

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

The skeletal growth of hermatypic (reef-building) corals is a sensitive indicator of environmental conditions and perturbations. In particular, excessive sedimentation and turbidity act to depress coral growth because energy expenditure is required to remove sediment and because turbidity reduces light energy necessary for coral health and nutrition.

Normalized annual growth (linear skeletal extension) rates of Broward County, Florida reef-building corals were over 16 years (1985-1970). Star corals (Montastrea annularis) and brain corals (Diploria labyrinthiformis) were collected from each of four reef sites at two depths (9m and 18m). Collection areas were located in the vicinity of …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Within the governance of Malcom X College as an educational institution, the Dietetic Technology (DT)-Nutrition program underwent an intensive audit in order to identify its strengths and weaknesses as a program and make corresponding changes as needed for the benefit of the students and the college as a whole. Nutrition Profile Of Dietetic Technology Students: An Assessment Of Application Of Classroom Theory Learned., Perla Miranda-Kushida

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

A unique advantage of being enrolled in the Dietetic Technology program at Malcom X College is that it provides the students with the knowledge of nutrition theory as part of their curriculum requirement for graduation. With this in mind, it was the hypothesis that these students will be practicing good nutritional habits for themselves besides being prepared for a career in this field.

Because nutrition and health promotion have awakened a national consciousness at preventing illnesses, the Allied Health Department suggested that nutrition should be made part of the curriculum for all allied health students. However, the college administration, conscious …

Development Of Weekend Semesters In The Dietetic Technology - Nutrition Program At Malcolm X College For Chicago Full-Time Employees., Perla Miranda-Kushida

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The implications of enrollment decline at Malcom X College has created a dilemma and major economic concern to the college that it launched a college-wide marketing approach to attract new types of students in addition to high school graduates. Responding to this campaign, the Dietetic Technology-Nutrition program targeted the employees working full-time in hospitals and health care facilities’ dietary departments through a needs survey. The survey confirmed an overwhelming interest of employees in the program for weekend classes because of their working hours. Hence, the development of the weekend program to provide them with classes on Saturdays and Sundays of …
