An Investigation To Determine The Prevalence Of Starvation Dieting Among High School Students As Affected By Gender, Race And Socioeconomic Status, Michal Lee Erickson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Sociologists report that twenty million Americans are on a 'serious' diet. There has never been a period when such large numbers of people have spent so much time, money, and emotional energy on their weight. The message conveyed by society, the Fashion and movie industries, modern medicine and the media is quite clear - thin is in! The problem lies in the fact that the message does not distinguish between realistic standards and unattainable ideals, especially for women.
Experts on eating disorders report that ninety percent of those suffering from anorexia nervosa (self-starvation) are females, ages 13-21, from white ethnic …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Sixteen Academic Variables On Completion And Noncompletion Of An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Karon Titus Overmeyer
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The continuing decline in the number of applicants to nursing programs combined with the need to ensure that graduates are competent has made essential the development of reliable predictors that more fully assess the potential of all individuals in the restricted applicant pool. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to determine which admission and continuation criteria used by Broward Community College's (BCC) Nursing Program could be used as predictors for completion of the program and (2) to determine those students who are at-risk of not completing the nursing program. The independent variables for the study were five admission …

Instituting Staff Training In A Large Child Care Center Through Development Of A Personalized Orientation Plan, Gail Shreders
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Due to insufficient time and resources, there was a lack of consistent personalized orientation and training at the child care center. Staff needed to learn appropriate methods of child management as well as routines and other responsibilities at the center. Information was collected from the staff in order to determine their needs concerning the delivery of in-service education.
The author designed and implemented a 10-week orientation which consisted of six main topics of staff development. The delivery of information to new employees was mostly through on-the-job training provided by mentors. The author supervised the mentors and the new employees. Individuals …

Computer Education For Teachers Of Young Children: A Developmentally-Based Training Module, Dale Shipley
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to solve a problem related to the provision of a computer training component for students enrolled in an early childhood education teacher training program. Increasing pressures on graduates of the training program to integrate computers and educational software into programs for young children, as well as the students' interest in developing computer skills specifically related to early childhood education, made it necessary to design a computer training module which could be integrated into existing classroom hours in a tightly scheduled training program.
The writer surveyed the students in the training program in order to determine previous …

A Model For Determining The Need For Chronic Disease Prevention In The Community: Development And Use, Janet Garzone Kosidlak
A Model For Determining The Need For Chronic Disease Prevention In The Community: Development And Use, Janet Garzone Kosidlak
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The traditional concerns of public health have been the promotion of health, the prevention of disease, and the prevention of premature death. As death from communicable diseases and conditions of pregnancy and early infancy decrease, public health interests are being expanded toward the prevention of premature death from chronic diseases.
Mortality rates were the most common indicators used to describe the burden of chronic disease problems in the community. Mortality rates are based on the number of incidences per 100,000 population. A relatively newer indicator is called Years of Potential Life Lost. Years of Potential Life Lost represent the number …

Teaching Self-Esteem To Improve Performance In Eighth Grade Basic Earth Science, J Mark Huffines
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Low performance in a basic eighth-grade earth science class was addressed by a one-class-period per week self-esteem unit presented by the writer and daily positive self-concept reinforcement methods implemented by the regular classroom teacher. Students were presented concepts of self-esteem such as "self-talk,” “irrational beliefs,” “setting and attaining goals,” and “positive relationships” and participated in discussions concerning their feelings about themselves, school, families, and others. There was a standardized measure of self-esteem pretest and posttest, and student performance was measured via comparison of their earth science grade average between the first and the tenth week. Students improved in both grade …

Increasing Levels Of Abstract Reasoning Ability In First And Second Graders Through Instruction In Inferential Thinking And Analogical Reasoning, Shelley Cindy Obrand
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The ability of first and second graders to use reasoning skills was addressed by the implementation of strategies to develop inferential thinking and analogical reasoning. Piagetian theory was researched in reference to expected levels of cognitive development. The target group of students received instruction in problem-solving to enable them to make inferences. They also received instruction in determining relationships to enable them to solve analogies. Instructional strategies included: modeling, verbal rehearsal, metacognition, peer tutoring, manipulative learning, and discovery learning. The students' progress was measured by Precision Teaching (a monitoring system involving charting to document growth). Inservice training was provided by …
