Qualitative Insights Into The Complexity Of Calling: Moving Beyond Quantitative Boundaries, Jeannel King Oct 2025

Qualitative Insights Into The Complexity Of Calling: Moving Beyond Quantitative Boundaries, Jeannel King

The Qualitative Report

Why are deeply personal and lived experiences often reduced to standardized measurements? Calling is one such experience. Although widely recognized as complex, personal, and contextually shaped, the concept of calling has most often been researched through quantitative methods over the past two decades. This study employed qualitative content analysis (QCA) to examine how calling was researched across 267 peer-reviewed journal articles, trace methodological patterns, and consider how those choices influence the field’s conceptualizations of the construct. The analysis integrated deductive coding of methodological features and inductive identification of conceptual themes, refined through abductive synthesis. This hybrid strategy positioned the study …

Ethical And Responsible Use Of Generative Ai In K-12 Math Education, Martha Snyder

Transformations

Generative AI (GenAI) tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft’s Copilot have rapidly expanded into both K-12 and higher education, transforming the way students engage with writing and problem-solving tasks. In mathematics, AI is used not only to solve practice problems but also to explain complex concepts and serve as a digital tutor. While these tools offer educational benefits, they also introduce ethical concerns, such as student over-reliance, bias in AI-generated solutions, and transparency in problem-solving processes.

Drawing from the research literature and best practices in education, practical strategies are explored to help educators and students understand how …

Anticipating The Unexpected: Preservice Teachers Learn Through An Unbalanced Scale Task, Christine J. Picot, Josip Slisko

Transformations

This article examines how an unbalance scale task prompted seven preservice teachers (PSTs) to confront and revise their assumptions about student thinking. Tasked with predicting how early elementary students (K-2) might make an unbalanced scale equal, teacher candidates largely anticipated additive or subtractive solutions and less frequently redistributive solutions. However, several students proposed creative strategies including one who removed all the cubes creating an equal 0 = 0 scenario. This moment sparked deep reflection and a broader reconsideration of what it means to anticipate diverse students reasoning. We discuss implications for teacher preparation and curriculum design that supports flexible relational …

Room-Temperature Alignment-Free Magnetometry With Boron Vacancies In Hot-Pressed Hexagonal Boron Nitride, Raul Coto Cabrera

Mathematics Colloquium Series

Magnetic field sensing is essential for applications in communication, environmental monitoring, and biomedical diagnostics. Quantum magnetic field sensors based on solid-state spin defects, such as NV centers in diamond, typically require precise alignment between the external magnetic field and the defect’s spin quantization axis to achieve reliable and directional sensing. This alignment constraint imposes challenges for device integration, especially in scalable or fielddeployable applications. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) from negatively charged boron vacancies (VB-) in commercially available hot-pressed polycrystalline hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Owing to the random orientation of grains in the material, the system …
