An Ecological Perspective On Deafness, Michael A. Harvey, Barry Dym
An Ecological Perspective On Deafness, Michael A. Harvey, Barry Dym
JADARA
This paper offers an ecological view of deaf ness to assist rehabilitation counselors and clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of problems that deaf persons may present. An ecological perspective identifies the many hierarchically arranged, biopsychhsocial levels which influence the development of deaf persons. It further identifies the sequences of interaction (the exchanges of information) which occur both within and between levels, and which include the creation, labeling and reifying of symptoms. The organization of ecological fields is described by a cybernetic model from the discipline of family therapy. A detailed case example is presented.

A Model Program For Limited-English-Proficient Students In Home Economics, Sylvia Castillo
A Model Program For Limited-English-Proficient Students In Home Economics, Sylvia Castillo
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The author structured and implemented lessons for a model home economics program to aid limited-English-proficient (LEP) students in an elementary school district where a substantial number of students were identified as being educationally disadvantaged. The program's goals were to help the LEP students increase English language proficiency while acquiring content area skills and competencies.
The program's structured lessons contained six basic components: vocabulary development, scripted lesson, audiovisual presentation, teacher demonstration, student hands-on activity, and teacher/student evaluation. After completion of the eight lessons, the twenty target LEP students demonstrated measurable, significant gains not only in content area knowledge, skills and competencies …

Cuny Law School: Outside Perspectives And Reflections, Judith Kleinberg, Mark Barnes
Nova Law Review
Under the influences of legal realism and its modern variants in linguistic and psychoanalytic of law, critical legal studies, and social science approaches to law, significant departures from the Langdell's model curriculum have become common: first year courses on legal method or legal process; near-abandonment of the socratic method by some teachers and at some schools (Yale, for example); the use of non-case teaching materials in upper-level seminars; and extensive clinical programs.

Development Of An Instructional Module For Beginning And Low-Intermediate English As A Second Language Students At The Borough Of Manhattan Community College, Linda R. Markstein
Development Of An Instructional Module For Beginning And Low-Intermediate English As A Second Language Students At The Borough Of Manhattan Community College, Linda R. Markstein
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
In 1985, the faculty Council of the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) passed a resolution that severely limited the courses that English as a second language (ESL) students could take outside of the developmental area. As a result of this resolution, ESL students were getting much less exposure to print than they had previously: thus, a critical need developed for new materials that offered beginning and low-intermediate level ESL students significant exposure to reading and that integrated reading and writing so that theses students could efficiently and effectively develop their English skills.
The need for new materials meeting these …

Teaching Esol To Adult Competencies, Gary A. Davis
Teaching Esol To Adult Competencies, Gary A. Davis
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The author developed and implemented a program using adult based competencies in the ESOL classroom. A control group was taught the same grammatical skills by traditional methods without including adult-based competencies. The author's purpose was to see whether the group taught with techniques which included adult competencies would master each skill better than the control group. Thus, a conclusion could be reached that teaching to adult competencies affects learning performance in a positive way.
The basic steps of the program were to identify the problem; set the objectives; plan the activities on a daily schedule; evaluate the results; and formulate …
The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of An Instructional Model To Increase Comprehension Through Written Structural-Response To Text, Jean Bravick
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
St. Petersburg Junior College (SPJC) requires large numbers of Incoming students to enroll in College Reading Techniques Classes because of deficient reading skills. These students have a particular lack of the higher level inferential reading/thinking skills. Although the value of using student writing to develop those skills has been indicated, little research has been done to identity the instructional methods most affective in college reading Classes.
It was the purpose of this study to develop, implement, and evaluate an instructional model to increase reading/thinking skills through written responses to the macro-structure of the text read. Answers were sought to the …

Using Instruction In Sentence Combining To Improve Syntactic Maturity In Student Writing, Judith B. Willig
Using Instruction In Sentence Combining To Improve Syntactic Maturity In Student Writing, Judith B. Willig
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Tenth grade students in two English Honors classes were given direct instruction on sentence combining. The goal of the program was to increase the syntactic complexity of student writing, to have them express more in each sentence.
Instruction was approached from different aspects. The students worked with two textbooks on sentence combining. They worked with sentences from the newspaper and a magazine. There were lessons in sentence combining as a means to understanding the style of two authors. Sentences combining was used as a means to encourage substantial revision of essays. Writing an abstract of the research paper was approached …

Improving Intermediate Mathematics Problem Solving Scores Through Specific Instruction And Self-Evaluative Techniques, Charlotte K. Tilles
Improving Intermediate Mathematics Problem Solving Scores Through Specific Instruction And Self-Evaluative Techniques, Charlotte K. Tilles
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The author defined a deficiency in test scores in an a fifth grade setting that consisted of above-average intelligent students and devised a treatment to remediate the targeted students. The objectives were to improve test scores; improve affective behaviors; improve basic skills knowledge; improve the concept of word problems involving money; and to increase instruction in mathematical vocabulary.
The researcher defined a target group by using a pretest. The target group worked within the heterogeneous fifth grade classroom setting. Small discussion groups were defined within the setting for the purpose of peer interaction within the discipline pf problem solving. Large …
