Improving Collaboration Among Primary Teachers To Facilitate Mainstreaming Of Limited English Proficient Children, Joy W. Trute Jan 1991

Improving Collaboration Among Primary Teachers To Facilitate Mainstreaming Of Limited English Proficient Children, Joy W. Trute

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum was designed to organize collaborative efforts among primary, ESOL, and bilingual teachers. Limited English proficient children were receiving instruction isolated from mainstream class instruction. There was no cohesiveness between the plans of mainstream teachers and ESOL/ bilingual teachers. The students were at an academic disadvantage when mainstreamed because they were not familiar with the same materials as mainstream students.

The writer and mainstream primary teachers held planning meetings to develop a cohesive curricular plan whereby language arts and content area studies would be integrated. Bilingual instruction was coordinated with ESOL plans that were, in turn, reflective of mainstream …

Enrolling The International English As A Second Language Student In Nova University’S Programs For Higher Education: Implications For The Future, Daniel Lea Carlson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Since 1972, Programs for Higher Education at Nova University has offered a field-based Ed.D. program to clusters of students in various locations around the United States. In 1985, a regional cluster was designed to meet the needs of interested prospective students who were not located close enough to the existing local clusters to participate in the program. As the regional cluster grew, it was joined by a number of international students who live in other countries and for whom English is a second or third language.

Enrollment of international ESL students raised questions regarding the level of English proficiency needed …

Teaching Science To Students With Limited English Proficiency Using Cooperative Learning Techniques, Ellen H. Leduc Jun 1990

Teaching Science To Students With Limited English Proficiency Using Cooperative Learning Techniques, Ellen H. Leduc

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Minimal class participation by students with limited English proficiency and failure of the students with limited English proficiency to pass tests given in the regular classroom were addressed by the implementation of a science program involving strategies for the use of the scientific method of investigation, hands-on activities, experiments, music, creative movements done to poetry, and a science fair exhibit. Cooperative learning strategies were employed, utilizing the bilingual setting to the extent that each student with limited English proficiency was paired with at least two bilingual students who spoke both Spanish, the language of the target group, and English. Dialogue Journal Writing In Kindergarten And First Grade Classrooms, Eileen B. Lopez

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The lack of daily journal writing opportunities for kindergarten and first grade students was addressed through a series of in-service sessions designed to encourage teachers to provide daily opportunities for journal writing as required by county guidelines. In order to make the activity more effective, teachers were asked to give students written feedback. A parent orientation session provided parents an overview of the goals and objectives of the daily journal writing project. Success of the project was measured through classroom observations, reviews of students’ journals, comparison of students’ pre and post samples and a parent survey. Results indicated that students …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The serious deficiencies in format, content, and predictive validity of a Spanish I credit by examination test taken by native Spanish-speakers were addressed in this practicum. The proposed adoption of the level one 1988 National Spanish Examination, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, and an author-written supplement were evaluated as testing instruments to award credit and place students in advanced Spanish classes by district Spanish II and III teachers. One hundred percent of the Spanish teachers approved the proposed adoption of this examination which tests all aspects of linguistic competency, including the knowledge of grammar, …

Increasing Levels Of Abstract Reasoning Ability In First And Second Graders Through Instruction In Inferential Thinking And Analogical Reasoning, Shelley Cindy Obrand

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The ability of first and second graders to use reasoning skills was addressed by the implementation of strategies to develop inferential thinking and analogical reasoning. Using Whole Language Materials In The Adult Esol Classroom, Edward W. Schiffer Jul 1989

Using Whole Language Materials In The Adult Esol Classroom, Edward W. Schiffer

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Many English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students live in areas in which the English language is not the principal means of communication in everyday life. However, because English is the principal language of the broader society, non-English speakers are motivated to attend ESOL classes in order to participate in the mainstream and to receive society's benefits. The classroom is the principal source of meaningful English input for these students. Opportunities for second language acquisition are limited once the students are outside the classroom. This reality makes the quantity and quality of language presented in the classroom a crucial …
