Development Of A Revised Curriculum For The Dietetic Technology - Nutrition Program At Malcolm X College, Perla Miranda-Kushida
Development Of A Revised Curriculum For The Dietetic Technology - Nutrition Program At Malcolm X College, Perla Miranda-Kushida
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Within the governance of Malcom X College as an educational institution, the Dietetic Technology (DT)-Nutrition program underwent an intensive audit in order to identify its strengths and weaknesses as a program and make corresponding changes as needed for the benefit of the students and the college as a whole. As a result of this audit, a need for curriculum revision was established so that the DT-Nutrition program can meet new expectations and demands by the students, the employment field for dietetic technicians, and the accreditation agency: hence, the culmination of the old program and the emergence of a new curriculum …

In cloning adenovirus homologous sequences, from a human cosmid library, we identified a moderately repetitive DNA sequence family consisting of tandem arrays of 2.5 kb members. A member was sequenced and several non-adjacent, 15–20 bp G-C rich segments with homology to the left side of adenovirus were discovered. The copy number of 400 members is highly conserved among humans. Southern blots of partial digests of human DNA have verified the tandem array of the sequence family. The chromosomal location was defined by somatic cell genetics and in situ hybridization. Tandem arrays are found only on chromosomes 4 (4q31) and 19 …

Development And Implementation Of A Program To Improve The Effectiveness Of Substitute Teachers, Connie E. Boutwell
Development And Implementation Of A Program To Improve The Effectiveness Of Substitute Teachers, Connie E. Boutwell
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The author developed a program to aid regular classroom teachers in development of lesson plans for substitute teachers and to assist the substitute teachers in the implementation of those plans. The program's objectives were to improve substitutes' performance, to have substitutes follow teacher's lesson and and leave summaries of their classroom activities for the regular teacher.
The strategy was directed to the administrators, the classroom teachers and the substitutes. Substitutes were given information packets giving them directions concerning attendance and other school-wide policies. Teachers were given model lesson plans and suggestions. Administrators assessed evaluations of the substitutes by the teachers …

Coliphage As An Indicator Of Fecal Pollution In Marine Waters: Assay, Validation, And Application, Donald S. Mccorquodale Jr.
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Escherichia coli, the preferred bacterial indicator for fecal pollution in fresh waters, does not conform to the concept of an indicator microorganism because it is rapidly killed or inactivated by seawater. This series of papers investigated the value of coliphage, a virus which infects E. coli, as an indicator of pollution in saline waters. In order to be an accurate indicator an organism must (1) be ubiquitous in wastewater, (2) survive and be detectable at least as long as the harmful organisms, and (3) be easy to isolate and identify.
A review of the literature determined that coliphage …

The Effectiveness Of Two Fitness Training Methods On Trainable Mentally Handicapped Students, Ann M. Goodman
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum exposes middle school age trainable mentally handicapped students to an exercise program designed to improve their overall level of physical fitness. Fifteen students participated in the study conducted by a physical education teacher, a paraprofessional assigned to the teacher, and University c1f Florida student volunteers.
The Motor Fitness Test For The Moderately Mentally Retarded (1976) was used as a pretest and posttest to ascertain progress or lack of progress of students participating in the ten week fitness training program. Conclusions of the practicum were as follows:
1. Middle school age trainable mentally handicapped students exposed to a systematic …

The Role Of Student Affairs Personnel In Curriculum Planning In The Community College, Howard J. Freas
The Role Of Student Affairs Personnel In Curriculum Planning In The Community College, Howard J. Freas
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The assumption was made that student affairs professionals are not utilized in or only play a minimal role in the curriculum planning process in community colleges. The fourteen community colleges in Pennsylvania were contacted to evaluate the role of student affairs professionals in curriculum planning in these colleges. The results indicate that the student affairs professionals have a minimal role. The literature review suggests that curriculum planning models either do not exist in community colleges or are poorly defined. Since a curricular planning process is needed at Bucks County Community College, a process model based on Hunkins (1980) was proposed. …
Nutrition Profile Of Dietetic Technology Students: An Assessment Of Application Of Classroom Theory Learned., Perla Miranda-Kushida
Nutrition Profile Of Dietetic Technology Students: An Assessment Of Application Of Classroom Theory Learned., Perla Miranda-Kushida
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A unique advantage of being enrolled in the Dietetic Technology program at Malcom X College is that it provides the students with the knowledge of nutrition theory as part of their curriculum requirement for graduation. With this in mind, it was the hypothesis that these students will be practicing good nutritional habits for themselves besides being prepared for a career in this field.
Because nutrition and health promotion have awakened a national consciousness at preventing illnesses, the Allied Health Department suggested that nutrition should be made part of the curriculum for all allied health students. However, the college administration, conscious …

Development Of Weekend Semesters In The Dietetic Technology - Nutrition Program At Malcolm X College For Chicago Full-Time Employees., Perla Miranda-Kushida
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The implications of enrollment decline at Malcom X College has created a dilemma and major economic concern to the college that it launched a college-wide marketing approach to attract new types of students in addition to high school graduates. Responding to this campaign, the Dietetic Technology-Nutrition program targeted the employees working full-time in hospitals and health care facilities’ dietary departments through a needs survey. The survey confirmed an overwhelming interest of employees in the program for weekend classes because of their working hours. Hence, the development of the weekend program to provide them with classes on Saturdays and Sundays of …

A Follow Up Study On Persisters And Non-Persisters From Mirror Lake/Tomlinson Adult Center To Make Recommendations For Changes In The School Curriculum To Reduce Attrition, Herman Allen
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
For the past several years the high attrition rate at Mirror Lake Tomlinson Adult Center (MLT) has been of tremendous concern to the teaching staff and administrators. It is suspected Chat there are several major factors pertaining to curriculum that contribute to this dropout, problem. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to secure certain data relative to former MLT persisters and non-persisters, so that recommendations regarding curriculum and program changes could be made that might lead to a decrease in the attrition rate.
Persisters, in the attrition study, are those students who completed their program or graduated from MLT. …
