A Process To Credential The Registered Nurse As First Assistant During Surgery, Marilyn A. Hunter Jan 1988

A Process To Credential The Registered Nurse As First Assistant During Surgery, Marilyn A. Hunter

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The evolution of contemporary medical practice over the past 30 years is extraordinary. This researcher has observed medical practitioners with many years of preparation in the role as first assistant to the surgeon. When phrases as "cost effective and cost containment" were verbalized it was obvious radical changes were to be made. As time went by non-physicians were employed as first assistants. These individuals attained certification by going through rigorous training programs for surgical assistants. Registered nurses were assigned to assist the surgeons in surgery. An on-the-job training was taking place. Unfortunately, only the practical application of surgical assisting was …

Quality Of Life Indicators For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Former Vr Clients, Randolph L. Mowry Jan 1988

Quality Of Life Indicators For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Former Vr Clients, Randolph L. Mowry

JADARA

The success of vocational rehabilitation (VR) services is often measured by the percent of successful closures and employment rates at closure. However, these measures may not present a broad enough picture of the impact of these services, particularly since the ultimate goal of VR is lifelong adjustment for the individual. This paper presents data relating to the perceptions of quality of life for deaf and hard-of-hearing rehabilitants 314 years after closure. These data highlight objective and subjective criteria to describe the long-term adjustment of these rehabilitants. Discussion describes some of the contradictions inherent between objective and subjective data, and makes …

Recreation Strategies For The Retention Of First-Semester College Students, Richard P. Chesterman Dec 1987

Recreation Strategies For The Retention Of First-Semester College Students, Richard P. Chesterman

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The high dropout rate of first-semester freshmen in a small, church-related college was addressed by the implementation of an organized recreation/activity strategy. This strategy was designed to provide appropriate entertainment and to contribute to a positive environment in order to integrate first-semester freshmen into the college environment and thereby increase retention. Evaluation instruments measured student--as well as faculty, staff, and administration--satisfaction with the campus environment and social/recreational activities. Moreover participation was monitored to assess the level of involvement.

The writer concluded that the greater the level of participation in relevant organized activities emphasizing social integration, the greater the level of …

Effects Of A Dispersed And Undispersed Crude Oil On Mangroves, Seagrasses And Corals, T. G. Ballou, Richard E. Dodge, S. C. Hess, A. H. Knap, Thomas D. Sleeter

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the application of dispersant to spilled oil as a means of reducing adverse environmental effects of oil spills in nearshore, tropical waters. The results of numerous laboratory and field studies have suggested that dispersants may play a useful role in reducing adverse impacts on sensitive and valued environments such as mangroves, seagrasses, and corals. However, the use of dispersants has not been allowed thus far in most situations because of a lack of direct experimental data on the various effects of dispersants and the environmental trade-offs presumed to occur as a …

A Model System Design For Providing Adult Education Theory And Practice Information To Hospital-Based Educators In Texas, Michael P. West Sep 1987

A Model System Design For Providing Adult Education Theory And Practice Information To Hospital-Based Educators In Texas, Michael P. West

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Texas Health Studies (THS), a non-profit education service organization, serves hospital-based educators as a primary client group. These educators traditionally come from a health services educational experience which emphasizes the provision of patient care rather than education. However, this educator is expected to provide quality education services to a wide variety of groups within the hospital setting. With the increase in accountability throughout the hospital, the hospital-based educator may experience an increase in pressure to demonstrate competency. Since Texas Health Studies is interested in providing both relevant and quality educational services to its client groups, the primary purpose of this …

An Assessment Of The Level Of Faculty Burnout At Evergreen Valley College., Tanya Johnson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Societal factors and the internal pressures which developed in response to them converged in the 1980's to affect Evergreen Valley College faculty morale. Burnout has been thought to be a major source of low faculty morale. The human services professions are particularly vulnerable to burnout and for community colleges the major area of concern is its effect on the quality of teaching. It was the purpose of this study to assess the level of faculty burnout to determine the necessity for personal and organizational interventions to reduce it.

The Maslach Burnout Inventory was administered to all full-time faculty. The response …

Growth Rate Of Stony Corals Of Broward County, Florida: Effects From Past Beach Renourishment Projects, Richard E. Dodge, Broward County Erosion Prevention District Environmental Quality Control Board

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

The skeletal growth of hermatypic (reef-building) corals is a sensitive indicator of environmental conditions and perturbations. In particular, excessive sedimentation and turbidity act to depress coral growth because energy expenditure is required to remove sediment and because turbidity reduces light energy necessary for coral health and nutrition.

Normalized annual growth (linear skeletal extension) rates of Broward County, Florida reef-building corals were over 16 years (1985-1970). Star corals (Montastrea annularis) and brain corals (Diploria labyrinthiformis) were collected from each of four reef sites at two depths (9m and 18m). Collection areas were located in the vicinity of …

The Use Of Improvisation And Mapping To Teach A Dramatic Text, Denise Veronica Aloma

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The majority of ninth grade students indicated a strong negative attitude toward the study of Shakespearean drama. The same students had difficulty comprehending the Shakespearean language, understanding the plot and characters and recalling important information in the play. The degree of difficulty which these students exhibited was indicated by the best average grades earned on a comprehensive pretest of the play, Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare. The teaching strategy used to correct the problem was script-based improvisation and mapping. This strategy involved much activity and utilization of all the senses. Students were involved both as actors and spectators. Recall …
