Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The problem addressed was that many women became pregnant in the Head Start program for the second, third, or more times and had received no or inadequate parental care. Many lacked the understanding of what constituted healthy conscience and quality prenatal care. Some of the low-expected women failed to see the relationship between adequate parental care and pregnancy outcomes.
The PES program operated for one and a half hours bi-monthly for eight months. A series of 15 sessions was conducted by medical professionals and educators to the benefits for the women and their unborn infants or use as incentives, along …
An Investigation Of The Causes Of Early Withdrawal From High School And A Proposed Alternative Education Program For The Hopewell Valley Regional School District, Diane L. Paul
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to (1) conduct an investigation to determine the causes of early withdrawal from high school; (2) design an alternative education program; and (3) suggest an implementation plan for the Hopewell Valley Regional School District to increase the system's holding power of young people and to prevent school dropouts. With an annual dropout rate of two percent, Hopewell Valley school officials believed that an alternative school program needed to be developed to offer a viable and suitable non-traditional educational option to meet special needs, interests, and aspirations of the students. Four basic …

Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of An Intervention Strategy To Address The Low Career Placement And College-Going Rate Of Graduates Of A Health Careers Magnet School., Mitchell J. Bienia
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
It was the purpose of this study to determine reasons why less than one-third of the graduates of highly specialized secondary vocational school offering training in six specific entry level health careers has very low placement results in the field of training. Once reasons for poor placement were discovered, strategies were developed to improve training-related placement results through employment or continuing education. An evaluation procedure was developed to determine the effectiveness of the strategies recommended.
Procedures for this study were three-fold. First, a telephone survey was conducted of a random sample of graduates of the Health Careers Center who were …

Previous characterization of GLI, a gene found to be amplified and expressed in a subset of human brain tumors, revealed the presence of five tandem zinc fingers related to those of Krüppel (Kr), a Drosophila segmentation gene of the gap class. We have used the GLI cDNA as a molecular probe to isolate related sequences from the human genome. Partial characterization of six related loci, including sequence determination, expression studies, and chromosome localization, revealed that each locus could encode a separate finger protein. The predicted proteins all had similar H-C links, i.e., a conserved stretch of 9 …

Integration Of Adult Education And Patient Education Concepts Into A Conceptual Framework For Health Education., Jennie Ann Stone
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The AHE Matrix (Adult Health Education Matrix) is a conceptual model for the practice of client health education. It depicts the integration of adult education principles and practices into the concept of patient education. It reintegrated the concept of patient education into the broader, more inclusive concept of health education utilizing the Preventative Intervention Theory, which includes the concepts of health promotion, restoration, and the rehabilitation as an organizing framework. The model is depicted diagrammatically and assumptions, definitions, and rationales were also formulated to provide an explanation of the relationship among the three components: Health, Client Health Education and Adult …

Tidewater Community College has had a long-standing commitment to make its education al offerings as accessible as possible to the citizens in its service area by using numerous off-campus sites for delivery of credit courses. However, only limited information had previously been collected concerning the characteristics, expectations, and level of involvement of the populations for whom these outreach activities are provided.
This study was designed as a community assessment focused on the adults living in a residential area (8,900 homes) within the city of Virginia Beach, Virginia that is served by one of the college ' s off-campus centers (located …

This study investigated the test-retest reliability of 69 alcohol abusers' current reports about their past (approximately 8 years prior to interview) drinking behavior and life events. Drinking behavior was assessed by the Lifetime Drinking History (LDH) questionnaire and life events were assessed using the Recent Life Changes Questionnaire (RLCQ). Reliability coefficients for LDH variables were generally moderate to high (r = .52 to .81). Using empirical criteria, the diagnostic power of the two LDH interviews to classify correctly subjects as either having had or not having had a drinking problem was quite high. The reliability coefficient for the RLCQ was …

Developing A Model For An Advanced College Preparation Program For Rural Alaska Students, Jan O. Craddick
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
In order to address the problems of preparation that many rural Alaskans have when they first arrive at college. Sheldon Jackson College developed a program, the Early College Incentive Program (ECIP), designed to expose 8th grade rural students to the learning and living requirements of college. In June. 1988, the next phase of the preparatory process will be initiated: an advanced college preparation program for 11th graders who successfully completed the initial program.
The case study method of research was employed to study preparatory and compensatory programs at other colleges and universities in order to develop a model that could …

The strategy was administered over a ten week period. The writer trained four teachers representative of grades 9-12 from different curricula areas grade and ability levels. Classes were presented in two critical thinking strategies, concept attainment development by Jerome Bruner and Taba inductive developed by Hilda Taba. A coaching model based on Bruce Joyce and Beverly Showers' work was utilized as a means of implementation. An initial staff critical …

The Development Of An Articulation Model Between Shelby State Community College And Two Comprehensive State Universities, Frank B. Heard
The Development Of An Articulation Model Between Shelby State Community College And Two Comprehensive State Universities, Frank B. Heard
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Shelby State Community College (SSCC) is one of forty-six institutions comprising the State University and Community College System of Tennessee (SBR). The SBR enrolls large numbers of students each year who have educational objectives that are subject to change. Students who wish to transfer from two-to four-year institutions often lose credit, and are sometimes required to repeat course content already learned. This results in increased attrition, and loss of money and time for students, faculty, and taxpayers.
The purpose of this major applied research project was to devise an articulation model between SSCC, Memphis State University (MSU), and Tennessee State …
