A Study Of Full-Time Faculty Burnout At Evergreen Valley College, Tanya Johnson
A Study Of Full-Time Faculty Burnout At Evergreen Valley College, Tanya Johnson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Faculty burnout is a phenomenon of growing proportions in higher education. The results of a 1985 study of full-time faculty at Evergreen Valley College (EVC) indicated a significant burnout problem, making it imperative to identify the contributing factors and to create interventions for alleviating it. The purposes of this study were to: identify major contributors to EVC full-time faculty burnout; discover what is being done to reduce full-time faculty burnout in other California community colleges that are organizationally similar to EVC; and, devise directions to assist EVC to alleviate its full -time faculty burnout.
The research questions for this study …

Peer Counseling In The Elementary School: Promoting Personal And Academic Growth Through Positive Relationships Thereby Increasing Self-Esteem And Self-Concept, Debra J. Lieberman
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The effects of a peer counseling program on the elementary school level was studied to determine if positive relationships would promote personal and academic growth thereby increasing self-esteem and self-concept. The project was implemented in three phases: selection and training of 15 fourth and fifth grade students, implementation of special projects (i.e., counseling, tutoring, meeters and greeters, big brother/big sister), and evaluation. The 15 students were trained in the areas of facilitative responding, effective listening skills, helping characteristics, problem solving techniques, maintaining positive relationships, awareness of feelings, scheduling, and maintenance of logs. Evaluation included pre and post attitude surveys of …

Interchromosomal translocations within lymphoid neoplasms frequently involve the antigen receptor genes. We cloned the breakpoints of the t(11;14)(p15;q11) in a CD3-negative T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell line (RPMI 8402) in order to identify new genes potentially involved in T-cell neoplasia. An extensive comparison of both breakpoints and their germ line counterparts indicated that an inadvertant recombinase-mediated break at chromosome segment 11p15 recombined with the delta T-cell receptor at 14q11. The derivative 11 breakpoint resembles a coding joint in which 11p15 rather than a variable region was introduced 5' to a Dδ1Dδ2Jδ1 intermediate rearrangement. Conversely, the …

The Use Of The College-Level Academic Skills Test For The Nontraditional Community College Student., Harry T. Albertson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
In Florida, there is the anomaly of a student successfully completing a prescribed curriculum leading to the associate in arts degree and having the degree and access to the upper division delayed or denied because of an inability to pass a four-hour exam. The exam is called the College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST), and recent studies postulating biases within the Competency standards of the test et concern about statistically significant score differences between certain populations have raised issues about the test performance of nontraditional students.
Succinctly, this study utilized quasi-experimental techniques to isolate the performance of adult students. female students, …

The Development Of A Stress Management Training Program For Faculty On The Prevention And Recovery Of Burnout, Joseph W. Laing
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Academic burnout and stress are experienced widely at both small and large private and public post-secondary institutions. This is perhaps due to the interpersonal relationships and expectations essential to academe. Faculty members at West Coast Christian College are not immune to potential sources of academic stress.
The purpose of this study was to develop a stress management program for faculty at West Coast Christian College on the prevention and recovery of burnout. A review of the literature led to the employment of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) Educators Survey to assess faculty burnout; the results were then used to guide …

Development Of A Chemical Dependency Curriculum For The Continuing Education Department At Palm Beach Community College, Donna Clark
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The Continuing Education Department Palm Beach Community College offers courses for state licensed mental health professionals and nurses who are in need of continuing education hours required by the State of Florida for relicensure. Many mental health professionals have not received training in the field of chemical dependency and are unable to detect this problem when working with individuals the seek counseling. Palm Beach County has a high rate of substance abuse and frequently these individuals seek help from mental health professionals. Consequently, a chemically dependent person could be engaged in the counseling process and never receive an accurate diagnosis …

Improving Speech Pathologists’ Identification Of Conductive Pathologies In Preschool And School Age Children Through Inservice Training, Joseph A. Guillory
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to improve the identification of conductive pathologies in preschool and school-aged children by speech pathologists through in-service training. The primary goal was to reduce the significant delays in referral to otologists for immediate medical care to alleviate conductive pathology and reduce the risk of delays in language and academic performance. The secondary goal included the identification of obvious conductive hearing losses at the school building level and the immediate referral to otologists for medical care.
The writer conducted several in-service training programs designed to improve speech pathologist's skills in otoscopic visualizations as part of the hearing …

An In-Service Program To Foster The Teaching Of Life Skills To Moderately Retarded Elementary School Students, Janice E. Dunn
An In-Service Program To Foster The Teaching Of Life Skills To Moderately Retarded Elementary School Students, Janice E. Dunn
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to foster the teaching of life skills to moderately retarded elementary school students. The goal was that teachers would implement appropriate life skills programs for their developmentally delayed students and teach their students the skills necessary for independent or semi-independent living.
The writer provided a two-day workshop which gave teachers from different communities the opportunity to share teaching strategies and techniques, plan in groups, share materials, and problem-solve together. The writer provided follow-up through classroom visits with each teacher.
The results of the practicum were positive. Analysis of the data revealed that all of the 15 …
