Intervention Strategies To Improve Behavior Of Children With Severe Discipline Problems, Carol Rosenbaum
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum aimed to reduce the severely disruptive behavior of problematic children. It also attempted to provide alternative behavior structures in the classroom, and to increase comfort levels of teachers when handling these “acting cut" children.
Twelve counseling sessions were designed to teach alternative forms of behavior. Children were shown different techniques for management and control of their own behaviors. Modeling and coping mechanisms were also used. Children were given reinforcement for progress displayed during the practicum. In addition. parents and teachers were involved. Data was collected before and after the duration of the counseling sessions. Checklists and questionnaires developed …

Development Of An Adoption Agency As Supplement To Current Services Of A Residential Group Care Facility, William E. Painter Jr
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The shortage of adoptive parents trained and prepared to successfully parent sexually abused children to youth indicated a need for this residential group care facility to develop a proposal for the addition of a specialized adoption agency as an adjunct to current agency services.
The author developed a proposal for the addition of a specialized adoption agency based upon extensive research and a needs assessment of referral sources. The plan for the addition of the adoption agency was therefore based upon not only the agency's own experience in placement of the graduates of its preparation for adoption program, but also …

Developing An Action Learning Approach To Teaching Science To Kindergarten Students In A Marine Wetlands Environment, Jeanne Mills
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to introduce kindergarten students to marine science through a hands-on process approach in a wetland environment. The primary goal was to immerse young children in science through active experimental learning rather than secondhand knowledge. The second aim was to offer young children the opportunity to study the wetlands and to see firsthand how fragile the world's ecosystems are so that they may realize the importance of maintaining them.
After the writer verified the need for this type of learning through surveys, she researched the literature, wrote her curriculum, created a teaching book, developed accompanying activities, held …

The social workers at the project site delivered services to welfare clients using a specialization model. This delivery model led to fragmented and haphazard services to clients. Such an approach did little to ensure the client's success in breaking the chains and cycles of poverty and becoming self-sufficient.
The author designed and implemented a strategy/ to prepare the social workers to begin the first phase of a transition from program component specialists to case managers. Case managers who help their clients to recognize and assist their clients to Overcome ail barriers to self-sufficiency. Strategy implementation began with the very basic …

Increasing Social Competence In Kindergarten And First Grade Children Through Modeling And Practice In A Self-Motivating Play Group, Michael P. Ferrentino
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum report describes methods used to increase prosocial behavior and positive peer interaction among kindergarten and first grade students through participation in a self-motivating playgroup. Five students attend daily play sessions in place of outdoor recess time, in which participation included planning cooperative activities, following them through, and reviewing their involvement.
The solution strategy was designed to include a participating teacher who facilitated play and guided students through pertinent intervention strategies during each videotaped play session. Students were shown their inappropriate behaviors through video playback, which was succeeded by instruction and modeling of appropriate behaviors. After practicing the modeled …
A Model For Determining The Need For Chronic Disease Prevention In The Community: Development And Use, Janet Garzone Kosidlak
A Model For Determining The Need For Chronic Disease Prevention In The Community: Development And Use, Janet Garzone Kosidlak
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The traditional concerns of public health have been the promotion of health, the prevention of disease, and the prevention of premature death. As death from communicable diseases and conditions of pregnancy and early infancy decrease, public health interests are being expanded toward the prevention of premature death from chronic diseases.
Mortality rates were the most common indicators used to describe the burden of chronic disease problems in the community. Mortality rates are based on the number of incidences per 100,000 population. A relatively newer indicator is called Years of Potential Life Lost. Years of Potential Life Lost represent the number …

Moratorium On Maltzman: An Appeal To Reason, Mark B. Sobell, Linda C. Sobell
Moratorium On Maltzman: An Appeal To Reason, Mark B. Sobell, Linda C. Sobell
Faculty Articles
Maltzman's comment on Cook (1985), which appears elsewhere in this issue, is an unveiled attempt to resurrect the same allegations about our research that he made 7 years ago. None of the allegations are new! Over the past 7 years, those allegations have been the topic of 5 separate inquiries, in each of which we were vindicated. In this response, we review the multiple inquiries and we show how Maltzman continues to (1) cite our work out of context, (2) make false assumptions about the inquiries and our procedures and (3) disregard evidence contradicting his assertions. He relies on data …

A Comparative Study Of Two Educational Techniques Used In Teaching Law Enforcement Officers How To Classify Homicides, John E. Douglas
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Law enforcement efforts in homicide cases focus on swift and accurate apprehension of a suspect. A new investigative technique developed at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Academy. called criminal profiling, now exists to assist in the classification of homicide cases and thereby directs the investigator's attention to certain types of suspects.
The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether teaching homicide classification based on the case method as compared to a traditional teaching approach would enhance law enforcement officers' ability to identify key crime scene indicators used to classify homicide cases by primary intent.
The sample included …

A Cost Benefit Study Of Clinical Education In An Entry-Level Master’S Degree Program In Physical Therapy., Risa A. Granick
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The costs associated with clinical education in physical therapy and other health professions have been debated by educational and hospital administrators in recent years. The assumption has been that these programs incur a cost to the clinical facility. To date, the physical therapy literature has been limited in cost-benefit studies with no definitive conclusions. This study examined the costs of Clinical education in a selective entry-level master's degree program in physical therapy to determine what monetary costs and benefits accrue to clinical affiliation sites and what factors are related to the monetary costs or benefits of clinical education.

Three human mRNAs are regulated post-transcriptionally by iron via iron-responsive elements (IREs) contained in each mRNA. A cytoplasmic protein (IRE-BP) binds to these cis-acting elements and mediates the translational regulation of ferritin H- and L-chain mRNA and the iron-dependent stability of transferrin receptor (TfR) mRNA. We have taken advantage of the different mobilities of the human and rodent IRE/IRE-BP complexes on non-denaturing polyacrylamide gels to determine the chromosomal localization of the gene encoding the IRE-BP. Utilizing a panel of 34 different human/rodent hybrid cell lines we have assigned the IRE-BP gene to human chromosome 9. This new technique based on …

Improving Academic Achievement Through Building Self-Esteem In At Risk Limited English Proficient Ninth Grade Haitian Students, Gloria H. Myrick
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A self-esteem building program was developed and implemented to reduce the failure and potential dropout rate of limited English proficient ninth grade Haitian students who were failing two or more academic classes. Self-esteem building exercises and counseling sessions were employed over a 10-week development period. Instruments for measuring self-esteem, The Piers-Harris Self-Concept Inventory (Piers, and Harris, 1977) and The Demos Dropout Scale (Demos, 1970) were used. The results indicated increased levels of achievement for the target group when comparing their pretest and posttest. It was concluded that building positive self-esteem improves academic achievement. (Appendices include the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Inventory, student …

The results indicated a considerable gain in vocabulary acquisition, a good rate of retention, and positive student attitude toward the use of the varied strategies. Appendices include surveys, the pre and post-teat, strategy guidelines, parent information letter, analysis of scores, a examples assignment, and student …
Assessing The Role Of Community Colleges In Regional Economic Development In The Riverside And San Bernardino Metropolitan Area, Ronald O. Kibby
Assessing The Role Of Community Colleges In Regional Economic Development In The Riverside And San Bernardino Metropolitan Area, Ronald O. Kibby
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
California community college reform legislation enacted in August 1988 was predicated on the willingness of the colleges to assume an increasingly more prominent role in local, regional, and statewide economic development. Many colleges, especially small community colleges, have not clearly defined their potential role as a catalyst and resource for economic development.
This study had three primary purposes related to the role of the community college in economic development. First, the results of this study should assist administrators at Crafton Hills College, a small two-year public community college in southern California, in defining and implementing the college's economic development mission …
