The purpose of this research was to develop a plan to increase high school juniors' and seniors' academic achievement by one grade level and self-esteem by one level as measured by the North York Secondary School Self-Concept Inventory. Examination of 41 Diversified Cooperative Training (DCT) students' cumulative records revealed that 15, or 37 percent, performed below their abilities as proven by comparing the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of the Test of Cognitive Skills, Stanine scores on the Total Language portion of the latest Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skill (CTBS), and the first semester grade in their English classes. Pretest results of …

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older).
The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …

With the need for a program established by prior studies and local requests, this study was designed to determine the extend of need prior to the college committing resources for program implementation.
The study methodology …

Teaching Science To Students With Limited English Proficiency Using Cooperative Learning Techniques, Ellen H. Leduc
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Minimal class participation by students with limited English proficiency and failure of the students with limited English proficiency to pass tests given in the regular classroom were addressed by the implementation of a science program involving strategies for the use of the scientific method of investigation, hands-on activities, experiments, music, creative movements done to poetry, and a science fair exhibit. Cooperative learning strategies were employed, utilizing the bilingual setting to the extent that each student with limited English proficiency was paired with at least two bilingual students who spoke both Spanish, the language of the target group, and English. Special …

Development Of A Generic Model Aimed At Building Self-Love Among Para-Alcoholic Native American Children, Claralynn Merino
Development Of A Generic Model Aimed At Building Self-Love Among Para-Alcoholic Native American Children, Claralynn Merino
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes an alternative program for building self-love among Native American para-alcoholic, elementary school age children. There is a need to increase awareness of the para- alcoholic behaviors existing in young Native American students. The epidemic of alcoholism on the reservation affects all the children and increases the need for nurturing and love. In a culture where touch is limited, prevention strategies are important. The dysfunctional home and community environment should not interfere in a child's ability to learn. Co-dependent children deal daily with their public self and real self, and need outlets to relieve their tensions. The Love …

The Development And Implementation Of A Transition Class Work Study Program At The High School Level, Walter L. Surich
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The absence of an effective work study program to provide community based work experience for a high school transition class and the effectiveness of job trainer training procedures was remedied by the development and implementation of a plan to include five educable and trainable transition students and one job trainer at a community work environment. The work study program developed in-class job readiness skills along on-site work experiences at community based work environments to prepare students for societal productive coexistence after graduation. The program also focused on the selection, training, and supervision of a job trainer who exhibited competency in …

Organizing A Program To Increase Fitness Levels In Fourth Grade Students, Warren A. Bell
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
A high percentage of students have scored low on health-related fitness tests in the areas of Upper Body Strength and Cardio- Respiratory Endurance. Utilizing the Chrysler/AAU Fitness Program (1989) to screen the students, the author developed a means to supplement physical education classes once or twice per week to improve fourth graders’ fitness levels. After developing and implementing a Runner’s Club and a Fitness Course that was supervised by the fourth grade classroom teachers on an every-other-day basis for 10 weeks, the author was able to significantly improve health related fitness test scores, Appendices include Turkey Trot Guidelines, Pre-Test Fitness …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Sixteen Academic Variables On Completion And Noncompletion Of An Associate Degree Nursing Program, Karon Titus Overmeyer
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The continuing decline in the number of applicants to nursing programs combined with the need to ensure that graduates are competent has made essential the development of reliable predictors that more fully assess the potential of all individuals in the restricted applicant pool. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to determine which admission and continuation criteria used by Broward Community College's (BCC) Nursing Program could be used as predictors for completion of the program and (2) to determine those students who are at-risk of not completing the nursing program. The independent variables for the study were five admission …
