Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
From 1986 to 1989 Alice Drive Middle School was one of the lowest among nine schools in Sumter School District 17 in average daily attendance. The problem was documented each year in a report issued by the District Attendance Supervisor to the members of the school board and to the South Carolina State Department of Education.
State, school district, and Alice Drive Middle School policies, laws, and other related documents were examined in an effort to gain insight into the problem. Recent state level educational reform through legislation was determined to contribute to the problem rather than alleviate it.

Providing An Infant And Toddler Program For Calvert County, Frederick J. Distler
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report described a series of intervention strategies directed at providing services and programs for developmentally delayed infants and toddlers at-risk, birth through two. Evloence clearly indicated that at the proposal stage. Calvert County did not have a coordinated delivery system in place to provide such progress. A search of the literature showed that in order to reduce longitudinal problems it was in the best interest of Handicapped Infants and Toddlers to receive assistance at the earliest possible time in their development. It was further demonstrated that programs for Handicapped Infants and Toddlers were a major educational concern by the …

Improving Physical Fitness For Fifth Grade Students At China Grove Elementary School., Alan D. King
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
During the spring of the 1988-89 school year, all 115 fourth-grade students at China Grove Elementary School were given the American Alliance Physical Fitness Test. The students were also given blood-cholesterol screening and blood-pressure tests. The tests were given because of concern by faculty members anu school administrators that the students were physically unfit and this may be affecting academic performance.
Formal interviews were conducted with all 115 target group members during the 1988-89 school year. Health and exercise practices by students and parents were discussed. Students candidly participated in the interview.

Monologue Or Dialogue In Management Decisions: A Comparison Of Mandatory Bargaining Duties In The United States And Sweden, Timothy A. Canova
Monologue Or Dialogue In Management Decisions: A Comparison Of Mandatory Bargaining Duties In The United States And Sweden, Timothy A. Canova
Faculty Scholarship
Management and labor are adversaries in both U.S. and Swedish industrial relations. The Swedish model, however, is marked by a continual dialogue between the adversaries with the objective of achieving mutual understanding on a wide range of issues. This dialogue has been fostered by Swedish labor law reforms, particularly the Swedish Act on Co-Determination, along with a comprehensive labor market policy to promote employment. The result of such reasoned dialogue is greater labor support for industrial restructurings and management support for the technological modernization of industry. The American system could better be characterized as a monologue. In the U.S. the …

The Role Of Inositol Phosphate Cascade In Visual Excitation Of Invertebrate Microvillar Photoreceptors, Tamara M. Frank, A. Fein
The Role Of Inositol Phosphate Cascade In Visual Excitation Of Invertebrate Microvillar Photoreceptors, Tamara M. Frank, A. Fein
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The identity of the transmitter(s) involved in visual transduction in invertebrate microvillar photoreceptors remains unresolved. In this study, the role of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) was examined in Limulus ventral photoreceptors by studying the effects on the light response of heparin and neomycin, agents that inhibit the production or action of IP3. Both heparin and neomycin reduce responses to brief flashes of light and the transient component of responses to steps of light, and also inhibit IP3-induced calcium release, indicating that IP3 plays a direct role in invertebrate visual excitation. The effects of BAPTA, …

Academic Articulation Among Nursing Programs In Virginia: Practices, Perceptions, And Goals, Ruth H. Glick
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Since there is no state-wide plan for the articulation of nursing education program in Virginia and articulation practices are largely the prerogative of personnel in individual programs, a wide range of articulation policies and procedures are used in nursing programs throughout the State. The impact of recent societal factors such as changing demographics of student populations, the growing demand for nurses, and a nursing shortage has motivated leaders in the nursing profession to seek practical ways to facilitate the educational preparation of nurses. Academic articulation is recording renewed attention by nursing educators as one means of facilitating the preparation of …

This report describes a project that resulted in the development and implementation of community life-based curriculum for students in the County of Summit Board of Mental Retardation and Development Disabilities (CSBMR/DD) school program. The Summit curriculum altered the present self contained system of classroom instruction and utilized the community settings as a means to increase the amount of student instruction time in the “real” community environment. The most recent review of the Weaver School programs, by the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Development Disabilities suggests that the curriculum and the districts IEP process by re-designed to promote more and …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Edison Community College, Fort Myers, Florida, has experienced difficulty in the area of grade, inflation, comparable to other institutions. institutional and academic division policy changes on grading have resulted in changes in grading practices. One purpose of this project was to examine these changes and historic trends in grade inflation with multi-sectioned courses of the Division of Basic Science and Mathematics for academic year 1979-1980 through academic year 1989-1990. The other purpose of this project was to develop a plan to alleviate grade inflation in multi-sectioned courses.
