The idea of examining the initial orientation of Job Cops students had been discussed at some length by the North Carolina Department of Human Resources (NCDHR) Job Corps staff. It was of primary importance to the Department to do an investigation of this orientation, since it was directly related to the overall adjustment and satisfaction of the students, once they were actually enrolled at a particular: Job Corps center. The first segment of this report describes a program for improving the awareness of youth gangs in our schools and in the community. The program was designed to team school personnel with law enforcement agencies and other allied groups in a systematic plan to increase the awareness of parents, school staff, and members of the community of youth gangs and their activities in Broward County, Florida. In a survey of teachers and administrators during a Youth Gang Conference which was held in February of 1989, it was revealed that the majority of the participants indicated a need to be trained …

Improving Student Writing Performance At A Junior High School Through A School-Wide Writing Project, Paul G. Ondeck

This report describes a program for improving the writing performance of junior high school students in an urban school with a diverse student population. The problem noted was that student performance had been declining in the area of writing, both in content as measured by the California Assessment Program, and in the correct usage of writing conventions as measured by the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills.

Classroom observations and teacher interviews indicated that there was no consistency of instruction in the English Department's writing program, either between classes within the same grade level or between grade levels. The range of …

The Army Education Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, has enrolled a large number of soldiers who are academically deficient in reading and mathematical skills in the Basic Skills Education Program (BSEP). Although a verbal courses of the BSEP are offered at Fort Bragg during the yeas, a great number of students is not raise their initial general technical scores (GT) to the minimum acceptable level of 100, and many students do not even complete the course. Gateway Community College (Gateway) has a long history of providing custom and contract training programs to businesses and corporations In the Phoenix area. In the past five years, however, there has been, a three-fold increase in the number of these training programs. The office administration faculty members at the Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN) recently completed a business community needs assessment. After reviewing the needs assessment, the faculty determined that the present curriculum did not address many of the skills that employers listed as being important to their businesses.

The present curriculum has a highly advanced word processing course as the final course in the curriculum. This report describes a program designed to reduce tia high percentage of students dropping out of school! in Grades 9 through 12 in the New Britain Public Schools. A review of the dropout rate at New Britain Senior High School, as compared with high schools in other towns of comparable size and student population, indicated a need to develop a program that would address that need and ultimately reduce the 13.9% dropout rate experienced before January 1990.

This report describes the process used by Bast End Middle School to develop and implement a positive academic learning environment. Areas of need addressed included low teacher morale and low student achievement. Probable causes of the low teacher morale and low student achievement were identified as: inconsistent attendance monitoring and lack of parent notification, Ineffective classroom instruction, lack of adequate alternative programs, low student participation in extracurricular activities, poor parent and community Involvement, Inadequate provisions for diverse learning styles, inadequate reward, inadequate recognition program and frequent changes in school administrators. Brenat College, like most institution of higher education today, has faced accreditation association mandates to demonstrate institutional effectiveness particularly in its educational programs. The development of meaningful measures of student outcomes had become critically important both for major programs and the overall core curriculum.
