This applied dissertation was designed to help parents prevent teen substance use. School leaders and parents were concerned about the high teen substance use by teens. A review of the literature showed that involved and caring parents who monitored their teen’s activities had a positive impact on helping prevent substance use.

The writer worked with school and parent leaders to develop a Parent Network. A directory was written to provide parenting tips and phone numbers so parents could contact each other. This applied dissertation was designed to prepare early childhood student teachers with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of a peacemaker to manage classroom aggression with competence and confidence. During field placements student teachers reported frustration in their ability to manage the increasingly aggressive and disruptive socioemotional behaviors of their young students. Recurring patterns of anti-social behavior became a daily challenge, exacting a toll not only on instructional time, but also on student teacher attention, patience, and, over time, efficacy. The setting for this applied dissertation is Springville High School. Twenty percent of the ninth grade students at this school scored below the 30th percentile on norm referenced Stanford Achievement Test 9 in reading comprehension. The test results reflect the lack of reading instruction at the secondary level. The implementation period was for two 18-week periods, which used reading strategies from the researched-based Alabama Reading Initiative Program. This applied dissertation was designed to assess the computer skills of teachers at 5 alternative education schools so they could be grouped into sessions that would meet their ability level. Teachers at the alternative education schools used at least 5 educational software programs to enhance the curriculum at their schools; however, these teachers did not have the most basic computer skills and, therefore, experienced problems managing multiple educational software packages and the Microsoft Windows operating system. The problem was that there was no valid training program in place to provide the Peterson Clinic first responders with the training they needed to respond effectively to a weapons of mass destruction (WMD) incident involving up to 300 patients. The purpose of this applied dissertation was to develop a WMD First-Responders Training Program for the Peterson Clinic with plans for implementation and evaluation.

St. Petersburg College (SPC) was established in 1927 as a junior college; the name was changed to St. Petersburg College effective June 6, 2001, in legislation designating SPC as a 4-year college. This applied dissertation was designed to provide knowledge of attachment theory to secondary teachers in middle schools and high schools. Teachers were working with students who were displaying behaviors caused by student disruptive attachment to a primary caregiver. However, the teachers, not aware of attachment theory, misinterpreted the reason for the disruptive class behavior and associated the behavior with the behaviors of students diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Over a 5-year period from 1995-1996 to 1999-2000, an average of 18% of the students entering fifth grade in the Linwood Public School system were reading below grade level. This statistic clearly indicates that reading difficulties must be addressed early in the process of reading acquisition. By comparing 2 preschool 4-year-old groups (N = 48), this study addressed the need to increase a child’s readiness for school. This study was designed to investigate the effects that resiliency training had upon a selected group of students in a rural school with a student population of approximately 600. Planned solution strategies included staff development training and implementing activities to establish the school climate and student readiness.

Resiliency Skills and Abilities Scale was used as a pretest, a 45-item survey to determine resiliency scores, before implementing resiliency skills. This applied dissertation implemented professional development activities with kindergarten teachers to improve teachers’ knowledge of instruction and assessment of early literacy. An emphasis was placed on using diagnostic testing to gather data on students' performance and then to provide differentiated instruction. The program was implemented in a rural elementary school with a student population of approximately 335. Sixty percent of the kindergarten students were identified as at risk in the area of reading. This applied dissertation produced results at one elementary school that reduced the number of at-risk kindergarten students in the area of literacy.

In this applied dissertation, the researcher addressed the problem of high retention and administrative promotion rates of 7th-grade students in a rural public school in northern Alabama. A variety of strategies were used to improve student learning, student self-esteem, homework completion, and parent involvement.

This study examined the effect of using Failure Free Reading (Lockavitch, 1995) as a supplemental intervention reading program with fourth- and fifth-grade LD students at Howard Elementary School. The reading achievement and reading perceptions of 16 LD students were studied. An overview of the assessments for determining the perceptions and achievement of the students is discussed. Although an analysis of the data indicated some gain in pre- and posttests scores on the Standardized Test of Assessment of Reading (STAR) for some of the students, positive perceptions of reading were noted by all of the LD students in the study.

Davis Elementary School in Montgomery, Alabama. This applied dissertation addresses the issue of communication competence as it relates to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) intervention. Existing practices in AAC intervention are reviewed with emphasis on techniques and strategies. The current study investigated whether AAC intervention correlates to the perceived level of communication competence for individuals who use AAC. Four individuals who use an AAC high-technology device as their primary means of communication participated in this study. This study was designed to increase student reading achievement of 6th-grade students at Sparkman Middle School by offering increased time for reading with availability of student preferred genres and the use of selected reading strategies.

Participants selected for this study consisted of 6 teachers and 48 sixth-grade students who scored in the 1-3 stanine cluster on the Stanford Achievement Test, Ninth Edition. Additional time was built into the school’s daily schedule for independent reading of self-selected genres and individual student-teacher interaction. This applied dissertation was designed to support the development of a comprehensive system of care for grandparents and other relatives raising children, noncustodial parents, and children in out of home placement. The family constellation was changing in the community were the applied dissertation was implemented. Many children were in out of home placement with relative caregivers; there were few resources and no formal system of care designed to respond to the needs of these at risk families. During the 1998-1999 academic year, 8.78% of the students in grades 11 and 12 dropped out of the two high schools located in Florence, Alabama. This percentage increased each year and was projected to reach an unacceptable rate of 18.51% during the 2001-2002 academic year.

The researcher initiated a dropout prevention program, called Project Second Chance, in order to reduce the dropout rate. The Elam Alexander Academy Adolescent Program was designed to provide educational and therapeutic interventions to students diagnosed with Severe Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. The Boy’s Town Educational Model was used at Elam Alexander Academy because of the model’s strong emphasis on social skills.
