Exploring The Gendered Differences Within The Service Industry, Mariah Jeau Bartholomay Jan 2016

Exploring The Gendered Differences Within The Service Industry, Mariah Jeau Bartholomay

Sociology and Anthropology

For this study, I sought to understand the demands women face in their everyday lives and how these demands may impact how differing genders perform their jobs in the service industry. I utilized qualitative research methods to analyze focus group transcripts and examine servers who worked in Fargo, ND. For this study, I set out to understand two research questions: 1) Do women and men’s gender performativity impact their work as servers and/or bartenders? and 2) Do the differences in performativity impact servers’ and/or bartenders’ perception of gender equality in the workplace? I found that men and women experience their …

Nesting: Dwelling Through Surrealistic Spaces Within The Urban Fabric Of Minneapolis, Lauren Falcon Jan 2016

Nesting: Dwelling Through Surrealistic Spaces Within The Urban Fabric Of Minneapolis, Lauren Falcon

Architecture Theses

The next generation requires humble dwelling spaces within cities hosting problematic urban complexities. While the city attempts to establish order, issues of functionality, density, and economics, take precedent. Unfortunately, all of these focuses deprive us of fully dwelling by only providing us with systems and experiences based on numerical abstractions; they do not balance with or engage our basic human understanding of the world. However, these understandings can be discovered through a poetic evocation that layers space; a piece of architecture based on the poetry and sur-reality of the nest, and amplified due to its juxtaposition to high functionality and …

The Choral Music Of Frederick Delius (1862-1934) And Its Influence On The Choral Music Of Early Twentieth-Century British Composers, Jonathan Daniel Strommen Campbell Jan 2015

The Choral Music Of Frederick Delius (1862-1934) And Its Influence On The Choral Music Of Early Twentieth-Century British Composers, Jonathan Daniel Strommen Campbell

Music

The composer Frederick Delius wrote a large body of choral music including choral/orchestral works and part songs. This body of choral music had an important influence on the younger generation of British choral composers, including Philip Heseltine (Peter Warlock) (1894-1930), E. J. Moeran (1894-1950), Constant Lambert (1905-1951), and Patrick Hadley (1899-1973). To date, only one dissertation in the United States has been devoted to the choral music of Delius. While several books have been published on Heseltine (Warlock), the others—Moeran, Lambert, and Hadley—are underrepresented in scholarly choral literature. In his book Delius: Portrait of a Cosmopolitan (1976), Christopher Palmer details …

Folk Song In The Wind Band Music Of Haydn Wood: Mannin Veen And A New Performing Edition Of The Seafarer, Adam Charles Hollingsworth Jan 2015

Folk Song In The Wind Band Music Of Haydn Wood: Mannin Veen And A New Performing Edition Of The Seafarer, Adam Charles Hollingsworth

Music

Nestled between England and Ireland, one can find a tiny island called the Isle of Man, or more simply, Mann. One of its most famous musical representatives is composer and violinist Haydn Wood. In an effort to preserve and promote the fine music and culture of the Isle of Man in general, and the work of Haydn Wood in particular, the author analyzed two wind band works written by the composer. Mannin Veen draws directly on the musical heritage of Mann. The Seafarer, which has been out of print for many years, does not use Manx musical traditions directly, but …

Adapting An Icon : Adaptive Reuse Of Downtown Movie Theaters, Shawn L. Senescall Jan 2015

Adapting An Icon : Adaptive Reuse Of Downtown Movie Theaters, Shawn L. Senescall

Architecture Theses

Downtown theaters serve as landmarks for many communities across our region because of their unique design features. Elaborate auditoriums, decorated facades, and flashy, grand marquees are all iconic characteristics of local theaters. The value of the theater was never in the movie; rather the theater served the community as the center for social interaction, facilitated by the nostalgia that the architecture provided. However, these landmarks have become culturally forgotten and abandoned, and our downtown’s risk losing their sense of place without the prominence and upkeep of the local theater. My project investigates adaptive reuse solutions for the rehabilitation of local, …

Main Street Visual & Performing Art Center, Jennifer Watters

Architecture Theses

The community of North Branch, Minnesota lacks a suitable fine art culture. The school district is unable to provide a quality fine art education due to lack of funding. There are few opportunities for locals to become involved in the community, resulting in a lack of community pride. North Branch needs a focal point that will bring people and their ideas together to restore the sense of pride in the community at a minimal operating cost. The integration of art, architecture, and sustainability in this project aims to provide a supplemental fine arts education, a cultural hub with a specific …

Design Active, Alyssa Stroh Jan 2015

Design Active, Alyssa Stroh

Architecture Theses

The way in which one’s environment is built has a strong influence on the individual and community as a whole. Societies across America are very diverse depending on geographical location, resources, economy, climate, and numerous other aspects that work together to influence who we are and how we work with one another. One source of influence that can easily be overlooked when analyzing the various elements used to build each individual and community is the built environment. This thesis will examine the relationship between the built environment and the influence it has on the health of the community. It will …

Lessons From The Polis : The Minneapolis Museum Of Art, Nicholas Strombeck Jan 2015

Lessons From The Polis : The Minneapolis Museum Of Art, Nicholas Strombeck

Architecture Theses

Philosophers Alberto Pérez-Gómez and Hans-Georg Gadamer have critiqued the modern museum as a place of art for the sake of art, where the aesthetics of the work have come to dominate the conversation. In the Relevance of the Beautiful, Hans-Georg Gadamer distinguishes between aesthetics and a works poetic beauty as a delicate interplay of showing and concealing. The beautiful is presented through play, symbol and festival. This thesis explores Gadamer and Pérez-Gómez’s arguments in an architecture which blends influence from the ancient Greek Polis. The Agora a vital public space dedicated itself to the success and longevity of the Greek …

Nuanced Didacticism, Michael Delarosa

Architecture Theses

The United States is currently at a crossroads with providing equal rights to its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens. Living Utopia : Challenging Education As A Machine Through The Design Of Architecture, Amy Klindworth Jan 2015

Living Utopia : Challenging Education As A Machine Through The Design Of Architecture, Amy Klindworth

Architecture Theses

Philosopher Jonathan Powers argues that current culture and society are engaging a utopian ideology. This model began in the 16th century when the educational system sought to reduce all knowledge to eidetic (visual) content. At this time, figures such as Tommaso Campanella created top down educational models which boxed out the importance of learning through our experience of the world. Recently, this universal model of education has been criticized by many, including Hannah Arendt, who claim that the current autonomous learning approach only responds to politics, and that learning does not equal education. This thesis examines how architecture can challenge …

The Labyrinth Studies: Exhibiting Culture Through Art & Architecture, Philip Erickson Jan 2014

The Labyrinth Studies: Exhibiting Culture Through Art & Architecture, Philip Erickson

Architecture Theses

Our institutions are predicated on a stable and predictable ground on which to enact our daily affairs. Because architecture embodies our social, cultural, and political beliefs and values, when these beliefs become oppressive and burdensome our architecture reflects this. The Labyrinth Studies: Exhibiting Culture through Art & Architecture utilizes the ubiquitous nature of transformation exuberated by the labyrinth, witnessed in art and architecture throughout history, to explore architecture’s ability to resonate amid the developing ethics and beliefs it embodies. Minneapolis Minnesota exhibits a unique identity of art and culture, along with displaying a high demand for public art facilities. This …
