Music

In opera, the opera chorus actively shapes the dramatic structure through interactions with the soloists, commentary after events, and momentum provided toward scene endings. Since the chorus traditionally represents the voice of the people, it also provides a natural access point by which audiences may connect to the unfolding drama. To realize its dramatic potential, an opera chorus must have a resonant, vibrant sound that is more “soloistic” than other genres of choral music. Indeed, there are quantifiable acoustic differences between classical solo and choral singing. The characterizations of the chorus must also be convincing. Yet there is only minimal …

Mid-America Republic: A New Platform For Idea Sharing, Joseph Steinmann

Architecture Theses

Civic Architecture’s intent is to bring the people of its city together for common interests. Today, cities are growing at such an exponential rate that Civic Architecture is often overlooked. Many public buildings built are quickly designed and built with less thought than in decades past. This thesis research aims to show how Architecture can improve civic life.

Intimate Encounters: Transportation As Theatre In Toronto's Underground, Shaun Rolfes Jan 2019

Intimate Encounters: Transportation As Theatre In Toronto's Underground, Shaun Rolfes

Architecture Theses

The accidental eye contact, the casual nudge of the thigh, and the slight smell of sweat, subway systems are multi-sensory experiences that are unique to every city. Subways are daunting and anxious spaces. Being forced to be close with strangers is rare in the modern era; we tend to avoid contact with strangers as much as possible. Public transportation is possibly the only public space that forces you to be close to one another. But subways are becoming more and more intimidating. Underfunding and an increase in privatization of public spaces have left the public transportation realm a hostile environment. …

Enhanced Assisted Living: An Architectural Strategy To Reduce The Negative Effects For Society Caused By Aging Population, Mengke Xing Jan 2018

Enhanced Assisted Living: An Architectural Strategy To Reduce The Negative Effects For Society Caused By Aging Population, Mengke Xing

Architecture Theses

Due to the emergence of large numbers of elderly people as the Baby Boomer generation ages and the life span extended, an aging population has become a serious issue for modern society with far-reaching economic and socio-political consequences. In developed countries, this phenomenon is even more severe. The excessive aging population will have a tremendous negative influence on these nations’ economies. These negative influences, such as an increasing public expenditure, may lead to declining labor forces, lower fertility, and an increase in age dependency and working-age to old-age ratios. If the basic mental and physical health and financial and social …

Algorithmic Design And Architectural Machines, Hannah Langr Jan 2018

Algorithmic Design And Architectural Machines, Hannah Langr

Architecture Theses

What is our relationship with technology? As designers, we sit on the precipice between the abstract and the alien; between meaningful imagination and reductive otherness. With the permeation of algorithmic software in the architectural profession, are we able to design algorithmically with meaning? How can digital means aid poetic architecture? This thesis opens a less examined side of algorithmic thinking within the dialogue between designers and the technology we use. Language, humor, and pataphors become building materials in this architectural translation of ‘Pataphysics, a rebel, absurdist science created by playwright Alfred Jarry. A dense prospection and oscillation through philosophy, history, …

Interplanetary Habitation: Designing For Life On Mars, Landon Schoeneck

Architecture Theses

How can architecture adapt the complex engineering systems of a Mars colony to sustainable human life? Migration and travel has evolved from the dawn of humanity to the automotive and flight industries of current times. Now interplanetary travel is on the forefront of technological innovation. Innovation is created by those who dream farther forward than current society can understand, and it is necessary to push the boundaries of technology to make the impossible practical. thinking ahead to design for future interplanetary migration is a needed step to compel the world forward, as well as architecture and it’s boundaries therein. The …

Theater Of Community: Enabling A Vibrant And Interconnected Community Through Careful Preservation Of An Architectural Monument, Nick Saddler Jan 2018

Theater Of Community: Enabling A Vibrant And Interconnected Community Through Careful Preservation Of An Architectural Monument, Nick Saddler

Architecture Theses

In his book The Creative City, urbanist Charles Landry speaks at length about hard and soft infrastructure in cities. Hard infrastructure referring to the built environment and the functions that support it and soft infrastructure referring to the less tangible quality of social life and vibrancy of culture in the city. One of the biggest struggles facing growing cities is how to establish quality soft infrastructure as people flock back to urban centers. Along with this comes the responsibility of how to elegantly and appropriately address the neglected, crumbling, or just otherwise underappreciated historical buildings in city centers. The redevelopment …

Architectural Mood And Mental Space: A Cathartic Journey Off The North Shore Of Lake Superior, Ty Englund Jan 2018

Architectural Mood And Mental Space: A Cathartic Journey Off The North Shore Of Lake Superior, Ty Englund

Architecture Theses

Most people think of architecture as a profession that is concerned with aesthetic beauty—designs that please the observer through visual perception of the harmony, symmetry, and good proportions crafted by the designer. But, architecture is more than just aesthetics. Well-designed buildings need to respond to the functional needs of the occupants, and ensure structural soundness for safety reasons. However, I believe Architecture is even more than that. True architecture can create feelings and emotions from within, and cause the users to self reflect on their own lives. Furthermore, I suggest that we, as architects, can provide a healing environment for …

In Human, Christopher Carter Jan 2017

In Human, Christopher Carter

Architecture Theses

This thesis aims to utilize architecture as the medium to connect children to their environments and to develop them into social beings. Jan Gehl, a Danish architect and urban design consultant, once said, “Only architecture that considers human scale and interaction is successful architecture.” This interaction, scale versus the human counterpart, is emphasized in this thesis as the key motivating element. The project stretches the boundaries of how we view scale and focuses on creating a collage of texturized pieces that increase reaction and retention to place. To complement these complex surfaces, purity of overall form is employed. The designed …

A Model To Predict Matriculation Of Concordia College Applicants, Kaylin Pavlik Jan 2017

A Model To Predict Matriculation Of Concordia College Applicants, Kaylin Pavlik

Statistics

Colleges and universities are under mounting pressure to meet enrollment goals in the face of declining college attendance. Insight into student-level probability of enrollment, as well as the identification of features relevant in student enrollment decisions, would assist in the allocation of marketing and recruitment resources and the development of future yield programs. A logistic regression model was fit to predict which applicants will ultimately matriculate (enroll) at Concordia College. Demographic, geodemographic and behavioral features were used to build a logistic regression model to assign probability of enrollment to each applicant. Behaviors indicating interest (campus visits, submitting a deposit) and …

East Lynne’S Transatlantic Course: From British Serialization To American Theatre, Jordan Rae Olson Jan 2017

East Lynne’S Transatlantic Course: From British Serialization To American Theatre, Jordan Rae Olson

English

Ellen Wood’s East Lynne, a popular sensation fiction, began because of its original and insatiable British readership; however, the texts immediate and drastic reception into American theater confirms that this narrative is not simply an overly dramatic and unrealistic domestic drama. Although melodramatic, Wood’s text resonates with audiences because it is relatable in genuinely meaningful ways. The main protagonist, Lady Isabel, wrongfully leaves her family and spends the rest of her life in physical and emotional turmoil, however her endurance never ceases. Her character is psychologically compelling and easily accessible because she possesses truly human qualities and is a representation …

Viscera(L): Catharsis And The Treatment Of Chronic Illness, Gretta Berens Jan 2017

Viscera(L): Catharsis And The Treatment Of Chronic Illness, Gretta Berens

Architecture Theses

Chronic disease represents the most extreme case of illness simply because it cannot be taken away. Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) has remained primarily invisible from society, forcing its 5 million patients to fluctuate between hospitals and clinics in search of facility more attuned to the care they need. Taking lessons from the Greek theater and the catharsis evoked by tragedies, the architecture is designed to treat the individual with care and go beyond the over-sensitive, sterilized nature of healthcare architecture. By evoking a deeply corporal experience, the Edgewater IBD Treatment Center, in Chicago, Illinois, strives to attune inner and outer …

Roberts Alley Revamp: Introducing And Implementing Pedestrian Design Principles (Complexity, Transparency & Human Scale) In Fargo, Nd, Alysa Horn Jan 2017

Roberts Alley Revamp: Introducing And Implementing Pedestrian Design Principles (Complexity, Transparency & Human Scale) In Fargo, Nd, Alysa Horn

Landscape Architecture Theses

Alleys are underutilized as contemporary pedestrian thoroughfares because they have historically served to hide the utilitarian functions of urban life. Thus, the narrow spaces fail to provide the necessary amenity required for active pedestrian spaces, and are therefore shrouded by negative stigmas. As a result, alleyways are disregarded as being viable pedestrian thoroughfares and therefore fail to be integrated into existing urban networks. The redevelopment of Roberts Alley in Fargo, North Dakota seeks to evaluate and apply the traditional urban design principles of transparency, complexity, and human scale in order to challenge the historic stigmas and usage patterns surrounding alleyways. …

Emerging Public: The Public Library's Role In Building Community, Nicholas Braaksma Jan 2017

Emerging Public: The Public Library's Role In Building Community, Nicholas Braaksma

Architecture Theses

How can architecture create context and facilitate understanding of the information presented in public libraries through both physical and digital media to encourage community engagement? This thesis analyzes the architectural relationship between the public, information, and the city. Historically, library buildings have acted as the interface through which the public accessed information. As the way we access information has changed, libraries have changed as well. The proliferation of easy and remote access to information can lead to the assumption that libraries, as portals to information, are obsolete. However, information that is less exclusive is also less edited, driving the amount …

Building As Bridge: Re-Imagining Sustainable Living Through Symphonic Design, Emma Demartelaere Jan 2016

Building As Bridge: Re-Imagining Sustainable Living Through Symphonic Design, Emma Demartelaere

Architecture Theses

For German Philosopher, Martin Heidegger, a bridge is a manifestation of the fourfold—Earth, Sky, Divinities, and Mortals—which is at the root of all dwelling. He believed that preserving this fourfold is how we dwell in a holistic way on earth. This understanding of sustainable living requires human participation. Today, sustainable design has disregarded human participation with its specialized application, limiting our understanding of its relationship to the larger world. However, the task of architecture is not to reduce our understanding with the world, but rather to, like music, invite us into a space for interpretation; calling us to participate in …

Ore Dock No:1, Collin Johnson Jan 2016

Ore Dock No:1, Collin Johnson

Architecture Theses

This project explores how society values its industrial infrastructure and how industrial architecture is valuable and credible not only to the profession of architecture, but also to society as a whole. Industry has been a place maker, and an economic gauge for society since the invention of communities, and this project celebrates that idea. An adaptive reuse project that utilizes an ore dock on the shores of Superior Bay, it serves its community and visitors as a place to pay homage to an industry that shaped northeastern Minnesota, and northwestern Wisconsin. It attracted immigrants who formed cultures, and it created …
