Reawakening Cultural Significance: Ruin Exploration In Its Full Embodiment, David Majchrzak Jan 2014

Reawakening Cultural Significance: Ruin Exploration In Its Full Embodiment, David Majchrzak

Architecture Theses

This thesis aims to evoke a “historical consciousness” through the embodied experience of architecture. Specifically speaking, this architecture will reawaken the history of the Native American culture through creative participation in the public realm. The Black Hills has been a sacred land to the Native Americans for thousands of years, before the Euro-Americans took it from them. Through the interplay of absence and presence in the spaces of this architecture I hope to showcase the interweaving of past and present, the monumental and the ephemeral in order to explore the shifting and evolving nature of this culture. The program of …

Architecture As Desire : Exploring The Origins Of Our Desire To Hear Music, Blake Hagen Jan 2014

Architecture As Desire : Exploring The Origins Of Our Desire To Hear Music, Blake Hagen

Architecture Theses

Our mind is subconsciously entertained and potentially enslaved by classification into categories. A typology is a system used for putting things into groups according to how they are similar and architecture has equally adopted this practice. Typically buildings are classified according to principal activity, which is the primary function carried on within each building. This separation into pre designed types has formulated a way of thinking and restricted our ability to creatively exercise and challenge our understanding of the purpose of our actions and potentially envision new ways of living, or new building types. We need to think more critically …

Dreaming And Perceiving: An Approach To Dwelling In The City, Jill Pexa Jan 2014

Dreaming And Perceiving: An Approach To Dwelling In The City, Jill Pexa

Architecture Theses

This thesis aims to answer the question; how can we slow down our perception of city living to create an appropriate setting that reinterprets aspects of community living into an urban setting? The typology is a mixed use apartment and condominium complex in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The issue associated with city dwelling is that it has become more and more of an efficient infrastructure and lacks the cultural aspects and meaningful spaces that are necessary for meaningful forms of dwelling. By creating a sense of community and neighborhood within the city, those who live and work there will be able to …

Urban Infrastructure, Tyler Buerkle Jan 2014

Urban Infrastructure, Tyler Buerkle

Architecture Theses

This thesis project, Urban Infrastructure, provides answers to the question, How can a city’s systems and infrastructure influence its architecture? The building typology used to examine this question is a 75,000 sq. ft. city hall located in downtown Fargo, ND. The unifying idea of this thesis is to strengthen the sense of place through design by examining the basic components of the city. This project is justified because creating a sense of place based upon the urban environment ensures that the building will be designed specifically for the city.

Looking Back, Listening Forward: A New Transcription Of Leos Janacek's Suite For Strings For Double Wind Quintet In The Harmoniemusik Tradition, Bradley Miedema Jan 2014

Looking Back, Listening Forward: A New Transcription Of Leos Janacek's Suite For Strings For Double Wind Quintet In The Harmoniemusik Tradition, Bradley Miedema

Music

The Harmoniemusik tradition has provided the wind chamber repertoire with a tremendous wealth of literature. Spanning the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, these transcriptions of large-scale works had a formative influence on the creative activity of subsequent composers. Most notable are the transcriptions of operas. Some include more than twenty movements and capture much of the drama and intensity of the stage versions. While the Viennese wind octet with pairs of oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns became the standard instrumentation for the properly defined Harmonie, many pieces were also arranged and composed for ensembles ranging from six to ten …

Parks Reinvented : An Elevated Park In An Urban Setting, Amanda Ahrenholz

Landscape Architecture Theses

This oasis from the city is atop the Colorado Convention Center in downtown Denver, CO on 14th Street-right in the heart of the hustle and bustle. Because cities are becoming more and more dense, there is less space to save for urban green space and using space atop buildings is both an innovative and green solution. With framing the views of the beautiful Rocky Mountains, site users can experience the views of Denver while still remaining in an urban setting.

4th And Sustainable: A Balanced Design Approach For The Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant (Arden Hills, Mn), Zach Johnson

Landscape Architecture Theses

With a lack of appreciation and the underestimation of the importance and benefits a sustainable ecosystem can provide in today’s society, it has become a topic that needs to be tended to. A great way to approach the design of sustainable sites, is to follow the guidelines of The Sustainable Sites Initiative(SITES), as well as find a project that can utilize them, and raise awareness in the publics eye. With the large budget and exposure a stadium receives, it is a strong development type to pair with the guidelines for SITES. This pairing can positively regenerate both sustainable ecosystems and …

Fostering Responsible Behavior, Ali Alqattan

Architecture Theses

Educated children must comprehend what their duties towards the environment are and start fostering responsible behavior seriously. If children go to school with means to learn science, literature, etc. they might as well extend their discipline to how to use this knowledge carefully, When we need it vs. when we want it. This thesis discusses fostering responsible behavior in children at school. What humans ought to be aware of whilst using buildings as functional elements as well as sustainable elements. The design of the school will tend to arouse awareness towards the environment and reinforce responsible behavior in children.

Steam Baths, Jeremiah Johnson Jan 2013

Steam Baths, Jeremiah Johnson

Architecture Theses

Today, architecture constitutes the greatest range of the built environment; yet our buildings are causing physiological and mental stress to the public. If architecture is designed intuitively by engaging the public’s senses through innate habits, we can reduce the stress caused by ‘counter-intuitive’ design and delight the guests. This Thesis explores ‘intuitive design’ through an ancient typology—the bathhouse—built cliff-side of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota. By utilizing the concurrent transformative mixed research method, qualitative and quantitative data will present a cohesive analysis to complete the architecture.

The Activated Medium: Modern Architectural Representation And Transposition, Brad Benke Jan 2013

The Activated Medium: Modern Architectural Representation And Transposition, Brad Benke

Architecture Theses

This thesis explores the role of the modern architectural representation and its changing relationship to the act of making. The investigation will seek and test outlets for architectural representations to operate under functional and technical demands while activating a generative environment for the positive transposition from representing to building. These outlets will be demonstrated through the design and documentation of a growing building typology of the 21st century: the data center. The design is sited in Downtown Winnipeg Manitoba and is contrived to test the opportunities of an urban, city owned, public data center.

Accessibility Through Design, Erik Schwarzkopf Jan 2013

Accessibility Through Design, Erik Schwarzkopf

Architecture Theses

This thesis, Accessibility Through Design, will seek to explore the question: How can the design of a long-term care facility help promote physical and social accessibility of the elderly within an urban fabric, so as to benefit both the residents and the community? The current minimum standards for long-term care facilities can be a detriment to the health and welfare of its residents. A long-term care facility is better for both the community it is a part of and for its residents when it enables the two to easily interact. As a society, we need to find new ways to …

Architecture: A Tradition -- The Reintegration Of Historical Building Methods For Architectural Reuse And Adaptation, Kris Thielen

Architecture Theses

As our built environment continues to grow, new building technologies are continually updated and employed, while historical building methods become outdated and undervalued. Recently there is a resurgence in preserving our architectural history, and building reuse is becoming more common. This requires a larger workforce of craftsmen and women to exercise older historical methods and techniques. With the design of a technical college in traditional and current architectural building techniques in Minneapolis, Minnesota; we can continue to pass on valuable knowledge once held by master craftsmen in order to preserve our architectural past and culture.
