Community Fabrication, Stephanie Falkers

Landscape Architecture Theses

This thesis set out to design for multiple people and their particular uses. To combine the desires of many and influence the way that they all use the space. Each user has defined different outcomes for the area, with no common goal to be found. Through this design, an investigation and solution will be discovered striving to combine the desires of multiple users. This thesis will not only consider the user within, but commuter and the area around it. This will require investigation into a variety of different strategies and resources.

Concerning The Masked In Architecture, Fernando Bales Jan 2010

Concerning The Masked In Architecture, Fernando Bales

Architecture Theses

The thesis responds to the statement that queries the role of the designer and asks whether or not one can "unmask" that which has been covered up by our tendencies in the way we live. The typology being a master-builder university will help to resolve this issue. The unifying idea here is that through a “slowing down” in the approach to design, be it through poetic interpretation of an “artefact” or narrative one can then root a design in a tangible meaningful process. In justification: it is essential that we (as designers) slow things down in order to stop the …

Adaptive Architecture: Design For A Declining Global Population, Brian Sommerfeld Jan 2010

Adaptive Architecture: Design For A Declining Global Population, Brian Sommerfeld

Architecture Theses

In the face of a declining human population, our ability to plan for and adapt to future circumstances will be essential if we, as a global community, are to not only preserve our built environment, but also ensure its continued growth in a responsible manner. We cannot afford to ignore or be indifferent to the issue of population decline. And while it will require the cooperation and coordination of a large number of groups to develop a comprehensive plan, we as architects and members of the design community have a responsibility to develop our own set of criteria that will …

Downtown Development: A Lifestyle Approach, Travis Wilke Jan 2010

Downtown Development: A Lifestyle Approach, Travis Wilke

Architecture Theses

This thesis provides some answers to the question: how can the implementation by architects of minimal energy consumption and better material utilization in design begin to stop the wasteful ways so prevalent in our current society? The typology for the examination of this problem is a mixed commercial/residential building. The Theoretical Premise/ Unifying Idea that guides the research is, “Manifest destiny, and a growing American population have created unsustainable patterns of material and energy consumption.” The project justification is that this project will explore the impact on the environment of the things we design, and help promote the idea of …

Healing Dance, Branden Kalstad Jan 2010

Healing Dance, Branden Kalstad

Architecture Theses

How can cultivation through design become the next step forward in medicine and the arts by creating a homogeneous mixture between dance and physical therapy? The typology for this exploration is therapy through a performing arts center. The Theoretical Premise / Unifying Idea that leads the research is, “the Art of Dance offers an alternative option to physical therapy other than pharmaceuticals with the guidance of physical therapy.” The Project Justification is, “Physical therapy may borrow from insights developed by dancers to help those who are disabled to move again in their world.” In the narrative we explore the importance …

Developing A Framework For Sustainable Design/Build/Own Buildings, Alexander Keith Gore Jan 2010

Developing A Framework For Sustainable Design/Build/Own Buildings, Alexander Keith Gore

Construction Management and Engineering

The objective of the research paper was to investigate the development of a workable framework for Sustainable Design/Build/Own buildings. Research from case studies, a literature review, and a design exercise was completed to form this framework. Currently certification programs have been slow to infiltrate small-to-medium markets. In this study, it was found that the current sustainability assessment guides can be improved by reorganizing information to reflect the driving factors of time and cost as well as by increasing access to information with the abundant sources of videos, on line guides, and internet references in a more approachable manner.

Grand Coulee Living And Retail/ An Environmental Approach Towards Sustainable Living, Christopher R. Wetch Jan 2010

Grand Coulee Living And Retail/ An Environmental Approach Towards Sustainable Living, Christopher R. Wetch

Architecture Theses

Will there be a paradigm shift in the way people build and live because of varying economic conditions? The building typology will be a sustainable mid-rise mixed use building. The world’s population currently and in the future will need to be more attentive to the general standard of living and reduce the economic burden placed on people through more efficient renewable/ recyclable design. All of humanity utilizes some form of space from birth to death. New building methods, along with sustainable practices, can benefit both the environment and the dweller by reducing operating costs and reducing the carbon footprint. The …

Finding A Future For The Past, Jenn Whitney Jan 2010

Finding A Future For The Past, Jenn Whitney

Architecture Theses

This work addresses the uses of space within a building over time. Through the years, needs of spaces evolve and require changes. Often, buildings are left vacant once they no longer function for their desired needs. Economic hardships also add to this occurrence. This work gives the designer the challenge of reusing spaces that have lost their original function and are left in a state of desolation. The theoretical premise of this thesis is sought through exploration of human needs and their well-being. The designer then obtains a better understanding of the function of spaces needed. The site is in …

Arts In Architecture, John Holten Jan 2010

Arts In Architecture, John Holten

Architecture Theses

The fine arts can be viewed as divine marker to a cultural identity. As a non-essential activity to the survival of man, arts are infused with all of the free thought of the contemporary. More specifically, theatre is a direct correlation between the arts, architecture, and the human body; making a direct connection between culture and the built form. Even as cultural evolution transends generations the link between arts and architecture will be finite. Grand Forks, North Dakota has an ever-expanding culture of arts. Rapid growth brings the possibility of great change and has the potential to spark new ideas. …

Eos 1: Evolution Of Sustainability, Jonathan Thomas Jan 2010

Eos 1: Evolution Of Sustainability, Jonathan Thomas

Architecture Theses

Human interaction is a real need fulfilled by simple communication, verbal or non verbal. Individualism and congregation are part of everyday settings. The built environment has a large influence on how and when these interactions take place. This thesis is focused on the redevelopment of downtown Houston. This community utilizes two undeveloped blocks in the "inner loop" on the border of the high-rise district, and the underdeveloped old industrial district, which was rezoned long ago. The project embraces both individuality and communal need through its integration of spaces though sound Architectural principles. E.O.S. stands for "The Evolution of Sustainability". The …

Maintaining The Integrity Of The Public Library Building In The Digital Age, Alexander J. Engle Jan 2010

Maintaining The Integrity Of The Public Library Building In The Digital Age, Alexander J. Engle

Architecture Theses

Today’s public library building sits in a peculiar position as media changes from the tactile to the digital. The thesis aims to illustrate the continued importance of the library as a physical place within the community. No longer a place simply to store books, the library has become a place for human interaction, a place for public discourse, and a place for continued education. Far from obsoletion, the public library building will continue to be a crucial place within the community for many years to come. A Mixed Method approach to research will be used, gathering both quantitative and qualitative …

Rearrange: Making Space Transform, Amanda Makis Jan 2010

Rearrange: Making Space Transform, Amanda Makis

Architecture Theses

This thesis explores the question of how kinetic architecture can promote learning in the general public. The typology that is being examined is a kinetic laboratory. The Theoretical Premise /Unifying Idea guiding research is, “as the technology and experimentation processes change it is necessary for a building to change through the use of kinetic architecture.” The Project Justification is, “as the technology and experimentation processes change there is a need for the spaces that these processes occur in to change as well.” The building will be part of the North Dakota State University Research and Technology Park located in Fargo, …
