Community School, Ashley Hudson Jan 2011

Community School, Ashley Hudson

Landscape Architecture Theses

This thesis is intended to transfer urban theory to a rural place in such a way that it respects rural systems, and the result will be a hybrid solution. A design process will be set up to investigate the possibilities of the development of a rural school into a full-service "Community School." The desired result is strong community engagement and the successful incorporation of entities that will increase the number ad quality of services in the school district as a whole. In this process, the developmental stages will be approached in such a way that creates an armature for a …

Presidential Rhetoric For Second Modernity: Three Cases From The Discourse Of Barack Obama, Jude Justin Geiger Jan 2011

Presidential Rhetoric For Second Modernity: Three Cases From The Discourse Of Barack Obama, Jude Justin Geiger

Communication

In this paper, I present studies of three of Barack Obama's speeches. In section two, I analyze Obama's "New Beginning" speech in which he attempts to improve relations between the United States and the Muslim world and find that Obama's speech fulfills the requirements ofNeo-Aristotelian analysis and benefits from Obama's ability to view the world from different perspectives. I then study in section three Obama's "Prague Speech," in which the President advocates for the reduction of nuclear arms, and reveal that Obama crafts a new metaphor that centers on a journey in which nations traverse a bridge from the past …

Ensemble : The Art Of Inspiration, Kasey Howard Jan 2011

Ensemble : The Art Of Inspiration, Kasey Howard

Architecture Theses

This thesis will speak to the integration of the performing arts and visual arts and architecture. Architecture should inevitably be integral with the contents within. Consequently the content within the structure should also be affected; they interact together to create a whole. In doing so, both are more influential and strong. By studying each of these disciplines separately, we will then be able to recognize their commonalities. Once acknowledging the commonalities between them we are able to create a place in which growth is able to occur. The result would be A center for performing and visual arts. This program …

Reusing Structure, Mark Cameron Jan 2011

Reusing Structure, Mark Cameron

Architecture Theses

This thesis attempts to understand how built structures can evolve over time through use and reuse. It looks at how reusing a space is possible by taking a warehouse structure and reusing it for the new purpose of living space. Many cities are attempting to perform historic preservations as the cities age, such as a historic town like Duluth, which was founded with trading, was transformed into a mining town and now has multiple colleges. This project is setting out to better understand how a building can grow with the city’s new images. Buildings evolve as users act upon them. …

Pedagogical Composition : An Exploration Of Global Passive Practices, Alec Johnson Jan 2011

Pedagogical Composition : An Exploration Of Global Passive Practices, Alec Johnson

Architecture Theses

The Industrial Revolution has played a dramatic role in shaping the behavior and the mindset of the American people. Innovations like electricity generation, iron production, and sheet glass production have forever changed the way that people view the built world. Well-known and widely practiced ideas centuries old have been set aside to make way for the innovations of the revolution. We have come far since the birth of the Industrial Revolution, but we have forgotten our past along the way. Thorough understanding of the past is crucial for the assurance of a balanced, successful future.

Adaptable Spaces For Changing Paces : Design For Demographic Shifts, Laura Lutterman Jan 2011

Adaptable Spaces For Changing Paces : Design For Demographic Shifts, Laura Lutterman

Architecture Theses

The built environment is currently designed with (only) the present demographic profile in mind. Designing in this manner fails to prepare for changes in demographic profiles and creates an obstacle for users when the program changes. The built environment needs to be designed in a manner that continually adapts to changes in the demographic profiles to facilitate a productive society.

Contrasting History, Jared Jensen Jan 2011

Contrasting History, Jared Jensen

Architecture Theses

This graduate thesis examines the inherent meaning in a constructed building and using that to find a new purpose for that building that embraces its style, age, and purpose. Through this connection with history, the thesis project will attempt to show that adaptive reuse can be used as a tool for revitalizing a community that has been broken down by population decline and blighted buildings. As humans continue to struggle more and more with managing the use of earth’s resources, adaptive reuse will become an extremely important and cost effective method to reducing the amount of material used in building …

Events Machine, Robert Arlt Jan 2011

Events Machine, Robert Arlt

Architecture Theses

This thesis explores the relation between narrative and (im)material: investigating traditional means of making architectural media while testing and generating representation with film (narrative) in the pursuit of a haptic, architectural 'facilitator.' The investigation will be a hybrid typology of a wayside rest area with accommodations for tourists and travelers and also a water research facility for ecological research, training and global awareness. The architecture conceives experiences of space-time through a series of choreographed moments that reflect the context, a deep glacial history embedded in the horizon. What we do depends on who we are; but it is necessary to …

Urban Endemics: Protecting Imperiled Species, Jodi Sagvold Jan 2011

Urban Endemics: Protecting Imperiled Species, Jodi Sagvold

Landscape Architecture Theses

This thesis project will explore the requirements for a botanical garden and associated grounds, within the city of Fargo, North Dakota. A key element includes the addition of micro-climates suitable for the introduction/ re-introduction of native species which are threatened or could become threatened by loss of habitat. This project will also focus on methods of educating the public on recent advancements in land planning options with the goal of connecting fragmented habitats. These connections encourage healthier genetics and increased reproduction rates for at-risk species.
