Hell Hath No Fury Like A Scorned Soap Fan: A Case Study Of Soap Opera Fan Activism, Sarah Jane Adams
Hell Hath No Fury Like A Scorned Soap Fan: A Case Study Of Soap Opera Fan Activism, Sarah Jane Adams
Communication
Soaps operas, or daytime serials, have long been a staple of American culture. In April 2011, ABC-Disney announced the cancellation of All My Children and One Life to Live. Cancellations propelled the fans of these programs to launch efforts to save not only the shows, but the genre. Through the use of social media, websites, and traditional off-line activities that included calling and letter-writing, fans strived to make their voices heard. The study examines the creation of an online community and discourse through a textual-analysis case study of blogs on two fan activist websites. Dahlberg’s criteria for presence in an …

Landscape Architecture Theses
Water possesses a fundamental energy that allows for a unique biodiversity of organisms to inhabit this planet. It has long been an overlooked resource on this Earth and for that reason I would like to use its inherent properties to create a functional as well as aesthetically pleasing solution to educating people on the true value of water. This thesis seeks to understand the benefits of landscape design along the waters edge and how successful design can push the boundaries of sustainable practices as well as increase the overall quality of life for any who visits the site regardless of …
Investigation Of The Effect Of The Number Of Inspectors On The Software Defect Estimates, Kaustubh Saxena
Investigation Of The Effect Of The Number Of Inspectors On The Software Defect Estimates, Kaustubh Saxena
Computer Science
Capture-recapture models help software managers by providing post-inspection defect estimate remaining in a software artifact to determine if a re-inspection in necessary. These estimates are calculated using the number of unique faults per inspector and the overlap of faults found by inspectors during an inspection cycle. A common belief is that the accuracy of the capture-recapture estimates improves with the inspection team size. This however, has not been empirically studied. This paper empirically investigates the effect of the number of inspectors on the estimates produced by capture-recapture models, by using inspection data with varying number and types of inspectors. The …
Application Of The Kusumoto Cost-Metric To Evaluate The Cost-Effectiveness Of Software Inspections, Narendar Reddy Mandala
Application Of The Kusumoto Cost-Metric To Evaluate The Cost-Effectiveness Of Software Inspections, Narendar Reddy Mandala
Computer Science
Inspection and testing are two widely recommended techniques for software quality improvement with a common goal of defect detection and removal in software products. While testing cannot be conducted until software is implemented, inspections can be applied in early stages of software development. In this way inspection enables saving of testing cost and time. To manage the quality of their software, project managers need objective information to make a trade-off between the testing costs saved by performing inspections against the testing cost that would otherwise be spent if no inspections were performed. Project managers also need to decide on the …

A. G.L.I.M.P.S.E; Ashland Great Lakes & Industrial Mining Pier & Shipping Exhibits, Megan Nelson
Architecture Theses
This thesis project, ‘A GLIMPSE’, examines the question, how does the configuration and organization of elements in a space influence the engagements of its participants? The typology for examination of this problem is a history museum located in Ashland, Wisconsin, on the shore of Lake Superior. The Theoretical Premise/Unifying Idea that guides the research is, “by using elements both designed and in nature we can engage and evoke responses in a foreseen manner.” The Project Justification is, “Instead of relying solely on the usage of signage and advice from others to navigate and perceive architecture, the use of visual cues, …
Investigating Humanity, Morgan Fredrickson
Investigating Humanity, Morgan Fredrickson
Architecture Theses
This thesis is in response to the immense challenges facing the prison system in the United States. An unprecedented number of incarcerated individulas has led to a deteriation of the prison system. The psychological atmosphere is increasingly violent, inhibiting the rehabilitaion of inmates, failing at the basic function of a ‘correctional’ facility. Delving into the psychology behind the problem encourages a different approach than the traditional ‘caged’ punishment found in the United States. A new program called SHOCK incarceration is designed to address the psychological issues with incarceration. However, there has been little to no consideration of design for this …

Restore: Veteran Support Facility, Casey Tabert
Architecture Theses
This thesis project, titled Restore, critically analyzes how an architectural experience can have psychological healing effects on service members and their families who have been affected by the repercussions of war and deployment. The guided idea behind this claim is, “In order for positive change to occur, it is important to provide a facility where the emotional and psychological effects of architectural experience are researched, understood, and implemented. The result of this experience will improve the quality of life and restore a sense of belonging in service members and their families.” The justification for this project is, “People are affected …

Restart|Retreat: Minnesota Center For The Responsible Use Of Technology, Joseph Scallon
Architecture Theses
The Minnesota Center for the Responsible Use of Technology is an architectural design for a 20,000 sq ft computer education center in Minneapolis that promotes the responsible use of technology. The design provides for education and research related to the responsible use of computer technology as well as promoting a tangible connection between humans, technology, and the built world rather than a technologically mediated virtual environment.
Desalination And Architecture, Olivier Busagara
Desalination And Architecture, Olivier Busagara
Architecture Theses
This thesis project will focus on how a desalination plant can benefit the environment. As population grows, climate changes, and local water scarcity heighten, desalination of brackish water and seawater is increasingly considered as an option for a source of fresh water to meet anticipated demand. Desalination could also help restore water levels in places such as Lake Mead, where insufficient rain and snowfall in the Rocky Mountains have caused the lake water level to fall well below drought levels. Finding innovative ways to use the remaining salt in architectural application, such as building non-load bearing walls, could then help …
Harmony A-New : Alternative High School Design, Luis Acevedo
Harmony A-New : Alternative High School Design, Luis Acevedo
Architecture Theses
The typology of this thesis is a 14,440 sq foot public high school for underprivileged students of the Chicago Public School system. This thesis is an exploration of the potential for architecture to promote the overall wellness of the occupants in a learning environment. The harmony between the three main aspects of wellness (mind, body and soul) will be achieved through conscientious design of learning spaces and the ability of the built environment to foster learning and education for the twenty-first century. The current wave of innovative school design and curriculum is moving away from education reform to a learning …
Life Skills Center, Jeremiah Simones
Life Skills Center, Jeremiah Simones
Architecture Theses
This thesis revolves around the concept of inspiring and reviving the youth and communities of Phillips and Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis, Minnesota, through a Life Skills Center that will promote growth and development. There is a problem with the educational system in place today. There is not enough emphasis on learning life skills and too much emphasis on evaluation through formal testing and marking. This thesis intends to explore the options and benefits not yet developed in today’s education. Society should not forget to be educating America’s young with the skills and knowledge that they will need in everyday life. …

Designing For All Seasons, Megann Long Voelkner
Designing For All Seasons, Megann Long Voelkner
Landscape Architecture Theses
This design project examines how a landscape design can activate a small-scale Midwestern city’s outdoor use and tourism potential during the winter season. In the city of Bemidji, MN, the winter season can start as early as October and continue into late March. This prolonged weather can cause Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in people. One of the recommended treatments for SAD is to increase outdoor activity. The premise behind this project is that if Bemidji’s landscape was more functional and appealing during the winter season, it would encourage the residents of Bemidji to increase their outdoor activity during the winter. …
